How to keep the Evidence Log
Anti-Social behaviour and Hate Crime has a massive impact on people’s quality of life and there are a number of agencies committed to tackle it. We can only act against those causing problems if we have evidence of their behaviour. You can help by keeping an evidence log of everything that happens. Any information that you provide will be confidential. Those committing the nuisance will not be given your details. 1. This evidence log is your own personal record of what you see or hear. You cannot write down something that other people, including your own family have witnessed. They must complete their own evidence log. if you are unable to complete this log, someone else can complete it for you and sign it on your behalf. 2. You must fill in the evidence log as soon as possible while the incident is still fresh in your mind. do it on the same day if you can. if you leave it much longer a court might not accept it. 3. fill in one form for each separate incident. if there is a second incident on the same day or night, start a new form. Put your signature and date at the bottom of each form. 4. Write down everything you see and hear in as much detail as possible. A general summary isn’t taken as seriously by a court as word-for-word evidence. include swear words in full - see the example, this is much more effective than ‘he used abusive language’. We’re sorry if this is upsetting. 5. Please see the example on the next page.

draft example – Evidence log
Start time and date of incident? Time: 10.30pm date: 14th Month: february Year: 2007

End time and date of incident? Time: 12.05pm date: 15th Month: february Year: 2007

Where did it happen? House/flat number: 3 inside or outside: both Who did it? Who was involved? Joe bloggs (the tenant) and approximately 10 youths (male and female) who i believe are his mates as i have seen them before coming and going from his property. What happened? it sounded like they were having a party as they were playing loud music. i could hear them shouting, swearing and banging. The shouting seemed to get louder so i looked out of my lounge window and could see several youths outside in the street holding cans of lager and shouting at each other. it didn’t look very friendly. The argument then turned into a fight as i could see punches and beer cans being thrown. it was at this point, my children woke up crying and i felt scared so i called the Police. Any witnesses? My husband works nights but some of the other neighbours must have heard it. Have you reported it to the Police? Yes i rang the Police straight away. How has this affected you? i am on my own in the evening with my two children. The behaviour from my neighbour frightens me and my children. The noise wakes my family up regularly as incidents like these happen frequently.

Other evidence
it’s a good idea to collect other evidence to back up the evidence log. Photographs can help in some cases – car repairs, overgrown gardens, graffiti and so on. Put the time and date that the photograph was taken and sign it. Speak to the Housing officer at your Housing office if you need help.
