WORKSHOP ON OCEAN ENERGY
with a focus on
Wave and Ocean Current Energy
The first South African workshop on Ocean Energy with a focus on Wave and Ocean Current Energy will be
held in the Western Cape on Thursday, 21 February 2008 at the Spier Conference Centre. The workshop
is hosted by the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies on behalf of the South African
National Energy Research Institute (SANERI) and Eskom Research and Innovation Department (ERID).
The aim of the Workshop is to bring together representatives from the private and public sectors to share
information on the current state of affairs in South Africa and the world regarding the harvesting of energy
from the oceans. The outcome of the Workshop will be a roadmap for the next few years that can guide
the development of this industry in South Africa.
Everyone with an interest in the development of an Ocean Energy Industry in South Africa is welcome to
attend. In particular should companies positioning themselves to harvest energy form the oceans, public
officials concerned with energy, Climate Change and economic development, researchers and technology
providers, and financiers be represented to ensure that all interest groups’ concerns are aired and included
in the discussions.
Registration will start at 08h00 and the proceedings at 09h00.
There will be a small reception at the end of the day to facilitate further networking.
The following speakers will make short presentations to introduce the day:
Kevin Nassiep CEO of the South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI)
Deon Retief Retired Professor of Ocean Engineering and Inventor of the SWEC
Cobus Rossouw Director of ZLH Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd
James Joubert Post Graduate student in Wave Energy
Terence Govender Project Leader, Renewable Energy, ESKOM
