Class Notes - November 2006
I recently saw a couple of classmates. While on a boondoggle to Dallas, Pete and Dorothy Krouse took me out to dinner. They have a couple of great kids and live in a great house – I really enjoyed myself. Then, Joe Nimmich showed up unexpectedly as he was giving a lecture to a class at the Naval Postgraduate School. We stopped in the O’Club for a drink – it is amazing what outstanding service one gets when they are with an Admiral in uniform. Joe is doing great and managed to lose that cheesy mustache. Zach Frangos was in New London over the summer and saw Dan and Nancy Ross. He also attended the CGC EAGLE change of Command with Mark “Soup” and Nancy Campbell. Bob Lachowsky retired to Kodiak and spends a lot of time hunting and fishing. Recently, the last four Base Commanders of Kodiak (VADM Charlie Wurster (’70), CAPT Jimmy Ng (ret - '72), CAPT J Miller (ret - '76) and Chow) got together to see who survived the coldest winter, had the toughest NJP case and worked the hardest while CO. Bob Morrison settled down in Williamsburg, VA, and has been in the same house for 6 years – a record for him. He is with FedEx, and is going to school to learn how to operate the Airbus A300/310; after sitting sideways and instructing in a B727 for all those years, he is anxious to find out if he can still fly a plane. His wife, Susie (a high school substitute teacher), and the kids are doing well - Kerry is in her second year at University of Virginia, and Colin is a junior in High School. Bob Bernstein reports his Coast Guard Day/Divorce Party was a huge success. Since then he has traveled to Nevada and bicycled across the state. He says the difference between cycling on the East coast and cycling in Nevada is one of scale – he cycled across a county that was longer than his home state of Connecticut. Wayne Fisher wrote he “has won another teaching award, this time receiving Honorable Mention in the USA-Today 2006 All-Star Teaching Team. Wayne also placed third in his age group at the National Masters Track and Field for the Long Jump and Triple Jump and he finished 8th in the 200 meters. At the Nationals, he ran into Jeff Watry, who was competing in the pole vault and high jump. When Wayne is not running, jumping or teaching he is either organizing physics events as the National Chair of the American Association of Physics Teachers High School Committee or writing articles for The Weather Channel's national e-newsletter, Weather Insights!” Tim and Susan Quinton live in Sisters, OR, and are enjoying life. He sent a picture of 30" Bull Trout (approx 10 lbs) that he caught (and released) in a small river near his home. Of course, it doesn't compare to Zach's Africa photo. Tim is a fly fishing guide and does some occasional consulting jobs. He saw Larry and Leah Vose when they departed Bend for their summer place in Juneau. Tim says the red carpet is always out to classmates who want to visit and try some of the great fishing, hiking, or skiing in the area. They keep a really nice guest room ready 24/7. Mark Jones is moving to Grand Harbor Real Estate, LLC, to sell Golf and Yacht Club properties. If you are looking for premium inland property at bargain basement prices, who else would you call? John Nelson will be turning 50 and celebrating 25 years of marriage to Lynn, plus becoming empty nesters, with 3 in college. He works in Reston, Virginia for Cinea, Inc., and they license anti-piracy technology for professional and consumer video markets. If you are looking for high quality anti-piracy technology at bargain basement prices, who else would you call? Back to Alaska – Dave Glenn saw Larry Vose in Juneau (they get around!) – Larry is now the President of the Southeast Alaska Pilots Association. Dave also saw Ken Prime (Lockheed Martin) at a CG Foundation dinner in Anchorage. Dave said they both looked great, but I guess he didn’t look very close. Our 30th reunion is scheduled for October 5-7, 2007. The Mystic Marriott will be our home base:
Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa 625 North Road (Route 117) Groton, CT 06340 Phone 860-446-2600 Reservations can be made through Mystic Marriott's reservation department at 866-449-7390 or through their website (http://www.mysticmarriott.com/). The group code is uscusca. On Friday night, there will be a hospitality room at the Marriott and the planning committee is considering some dinner options. On Saturday there will be a pre-game lunch in Mac Hall and a dinner dance at the Marriott. Don Trone and Rich Lynch will make arrangements for us to choice from an array of clothing articles, such as golf shirts, ball caps, wind shirts, and jackets. We will want to wear something that makes us look somewhat alike during the march-on, so the items will have similar logos. Thanks to the hard working and dedicated Planning Committee – Steve and Karen Geotchius, Anna Montgomery, Trish Russell and Dick Hartnett. With a little help from my friends, I offer the following list of reasons to attend our 30th reunion: • Watch Getch and Karen Salsa dance • Hope for more table dances from Karolin Palko and Sherry Nelson • Compare cholesterol levels, blood pressure and medications taken • Find out if there really is a Penny Walleshauser • Maybe Mike Riley will don a black leather skirt again • Hear Gomer say "hhhhurtin " or potato • See our class motto in the new Alumni Association Building • Pork Adobo will be on the menu • Take a ride in Mark Grosetti’s Cadet car • See how many classmates that made Admiral will buy you a drink (I did hear a rumor that the Admirals were going to have a joint wetting down on Friday night) Happy Holidays!
