Maximizing Tax Savings with Gifts of Appreciated Stock
The most common appreciated assets, and the easiest to donate, are marketable stocks and bonds. If you are interested in supporting Truman State University, why not think about donating some of your appreciated stock to the University. The IRS still offers you a notable tax break for charitable gifts: • you may deduct the full, fair market value of donated appreciated assets, and • avoid capital gains liability on the transfer. This means that you can leverage a larger donation if you use an appreciated asset to make your gifts instead of cash.

A History of Kirksville Country Club
By Frank V. Colton (’57, ’59)
A
uthor Frank Colton conducted interviews and researched numerous resources including the Kirksville Country Club’s documents and records, minutes of the Club’s Board of Directors meetings, and newspaper clippings to trace the history and development of the pioneer northeast Missouri country club. The book covers the people and events over the
last 85 years that helped shape the Kirksville Country Club to what it is today—starting with the club’s shaky beginning in the early 1920s, struggles through financial hardship, a fire that destroyed the original clubhouse, to finally succeeding in having a first-class 18-hole golf venue.
An Illusion of Harmony: Science and Religion in Islam
By Taner Edis, professor of physics
C
urrent discussions in the West on the relation of science and religion focus mainly on science’s uneasy relationship with the traditional Judeo-Christian view of life. But a parallel controversy exists in the Muslim world regarding ways to integrate science with Islam. Edis examines the range of Muslim thinking about science and Islam, from pseudoscientific fantasies to comparatively sophisticated efforts to “Islamize” science. From the world’s strongest creationist movements to bizarre science-in-theQuran apologetics, popular Muslim approaches promote a view of natural science as a mere factcollecting activity that coexists in near-perfect
harmony with literal-minded faith. Since Muslims are keenly aware that science and technology have been the keys to Western success, they are eager to harness technology to achieve a Muslim version of modernity. Yet at the same time, they are reluctant to allow science to become independent of religion and are suspicious of Western secularization. Edis examines all of these conflicting trends, revealing the difficulties facing Muslim societies trying to adapt to the modern technological world. His discussions of both the parallels and the differences between Western and Muslim attempts to harmonize science and religion make for a unique and intriguing contribution to this continuing debate.
