Frequently Asked Questions
What items are restricted or prohibited when entering New Zealand? Aside from the obvious (illegal drugs, dangerous items, illicit goods etc.) New Zealand has stringent bio-security measures in place. There are significant penalties and fines for bringing in prohibited items or for failing to declare restricted goods. Some items (e.g. feathers, wooden products) may be admitted only after they have been subjected to treatment, or if they are accompanied by the appropriate documentation (e.g. CITES permit). Prohibited items include animal, plant, fruit, bird, bee, dairy products and so on. What are the prohibitions and/or restrictions regarding cultural items Cultural items such as eagle feathers, whale teeth, ivory, bones etc. are also prohibited and will be confiscated if appropriate permits are not held. All birds of prey including eagles are protected, as are all whale species. Regardless of cultural importance, CITES permits are still necessary, without these permits the items will be confiscated. Please contact NZ Customs if you are considering bringing cultural items such as feathers, drums, skins/furs, ivory, wooden products etc. What will the climate be like when I am in Hamilton? New Zealand's seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere. This means that the warmest months are December, January and February. The WIPCE conference is being held at the start of New Zealand’s summer. You should expect temperatures to range from 12 to 20 degrees Celsius (i.e. 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit). What clothes should I take with me to New Zealand? Dress is informal and relaxed on most occasions. Smart casual clothes are acceptable at most restaurants and night-spots. A light jacket or sweater should be included in your luggage should the weather turn cooler or you visit the high country. You can expect some rain, so include a light waterproof jacket or coat. Traditional costume is appropriate to wear to Pôwhiri otherwise long black trouser for men and long black skirt for women. Is it safe to drink the water in New Zealand?
3
New Zealand cities and towns have excellent water supplies and in all cases tap water is fresh and safe to drink. Water from rivers and lakes should be boiled, chemically treated or filtered before drinking to avoid stomach upsets. What is the voltage of electricity supply in New Zealand? Do I need to take a converter? Electricity is supplied throughout New Zealand at 230/240 volts (50 hertz), although most hotels and motels provide 110 volt AC sockets (rated at 20 watts) for electric razors only. For all other equipment, an adapter/converter is necessary, unless the item has a multi-voltage option. Please note that power outlets only accept flat three or two-pin plugs depending on whether an earth connection is fitted. What is New Zealand’s unit of currency? New Zealand's unit of currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZ$). Coins have values of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, $1 and $2; notes have values of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. There is no restriction on the amount of foreign currency that can be brought in or taken out of New Zealand. However, every person who carries more than NZ$10,000 in cash in or out of New Zealand is required to complete a Border Cash Report. Foreign currency can easily be exchanged at banks, some hotels and Bureau de Change kiosks, which are found at international airports and most city centres. All major credit cards can be used in New Zealand. Travellers Cheques are accepted at hotels, banks and some stores. If your credit card is encoded with a PIN number you will be able to withdraw cash from automatic teller machines (ATM's) situated at banks and shopping centres throughout the country. Check with your bank before leaving home. What are the banking hours and services available? Banks are open from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Automated Teller Machines (ATM) are widely available at banks, along main shopping streets and in malls. The majority of stores also accept Eftpos payments. Goods and Services Tax All goods and services are subject to a 12.5 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) included in the displayed price. Visitors cannot claim this tax back, however when a supplier ships a major purchase to a visitor's home address the GST will not be charged. Are there Tipping and Service Charges in New Zealand? New Zealanders do not expect tips for normal service - even in restaurants and bars. However, tipping for extra special service or kindness is at the discretion of the visitor. Hotels and restaurants in New Zealand do not add service charges to their bills. Is there somewhere I can change or get money at the airport? Banking & foreign exchange services are available at Auckland International airport and are open for all flight arrivals and departures.
