A DBCC faculty or staff member who fosters student success by helping at least one DBCC student identify personal study skills challenges and find working solutions, while setting achievable academic goals over the course of one semester that will help him or her stay focused and on track. What is Academic Coaching? A one-to-one relationship with a DBCC faculty member that helps students establish a semester plan to meet their academic goals identify their personal study skills challenges boost their academic performance clarify what they want to achieve at DBCC feel supported and connected to DBCC shift their thinking from college as a series of courses and assignments to a source of opportunities to achieve their dreams in life Academic Coaching can Increase the retention of DBCC students Increase students’ awareness and use of study strategies to achieve academic and personal success Enhance each student’s ability to effectively utilize DBCC’s support resources Academic Coaching at DBCC involves one-to-one academic skills mentoring based upon each student’s needs. The Ideal Academic Coach is motivated by a desire to support the development and success of others has a proven track record for working with others in a supportive environment understands the mechanics of learning possesses quality observation and communication skills The Ideal Academic Coach (cont.) understands the common barriers disadvantaged students face when returning to school is able to provide motivation and encouragement to develop successful behaviors provides appropriate, constructive feedback, and holds the student accountable Ultimately, an Academic Coach listens to the student's goals assesses the student's needs builds rapport provides encouragement establishes a foundation of trust and support helps the student develop a strategy for reaching his / her goals may contact the student’s instructor to gain further insight into his / her challenges Academic Coaching Sessions The Academic Coach and Student should plan to meet at the Academic Support Center at a convenient time for both parties for at least one hour each week for the duration of one semester Your First Meetings as an Academic Coach Building a foundation for academic success . . . You, the Academic Coach, and your student will establish goals for your partnership should develop structure for best use of your time Handout: “Strategies and Considerations for Initial Conversations” Also, your student’s LASSI Inventory and other contents of your coaching folder can guide you . . . . You and Your Student will build a productive coaching relationship by spending time on current academic concerns setting academic goals earmarking critical due dates reviewing completed assignments discussing other accomplishments setting the next plan of action You can enhance your effectiveness as an Academic Coach by Identifying general academic skill areas that may require further development, e.g. study skills time management setting goals getting involved on campus reading efficiently and taking notes preparing for and taking tests maximizing memory efficiency achieving desired academic results Referring the student to Academic Support Center (or other DBCC) services for the above, as appropriate You can build a winning team by celebrating your student’s incremental successes using an objective voice to challenge your student’s self-defeating behaviors and beliefs supporting your student's developing self- confidence holding your student accountable for working to his / her potential helping your student build the internal motivation he / she will need throughout life In addition, you should take note of “red flags” or underlying personal issues and immediately communicate with the ASC’s Retention Counselor, who may step in and work with your student identify possible or suspected learning disabilities and make appropriate referral(s) confer, as needed, with a counselor to discuss your student’s progress, motivation, or issues of concern Protecting Your Student’s Privacy Please be mindful that your student’s records are protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which affords them certain rights with respect to their education records. Students are guaranteed confidentiality to the maximum extent possible. Is a coach a mentor or advisor? One could argue that the services provided through academic coaching are simply a combination of mentoring and advising, as well as tutoring and orientation. However, this approach is unique in that it provides personalized service. It's the "how" not the "what" that results in the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
