Help Special Needs Kids With Sensory Toys By Alycia Shapiro

All children love having time to play with toys. It is essential to their growth and development. However, for kids with special needs, playing with toys is vital to helping them feel in control of their environment and increasing their ability to problem solve. Sometimes, play time is all that is accomplished in a special needs classroom and through that playtime comes important lessons and one on one time. Having the right type of toys in a classroom for special needs kids is essential. It is estimated that over 4 million children have some type of disability that affects their learning. Improvements in diagnosis methods have allowed pediatricians and other professionals to determine at a much younger age what help a child may need. This means that more and more classrooms and teachers that cater specifically to special needs children are becoming available to parents. Educational professionals agree that for these types of children toys become one of the most important ways for them to work on hand-eye coordination, social interaction, fine motor skills and gross motor skills. In this situation, you don't have to focus on what toys are considered age appropriate. Toys should be chosen based on developmental level not age. Even older special needs children can benefit from basic toys such as blocks, mirrors, and balls of all sizes. They help children work on these all important skills. The more research that is done concerning special needs, the more it is clear that another important aspect of learning for special needs children is sensory play. Toys like textured balls, sand and water tables, and lacing boards can help children feel calm and comforted by touching. These simple toys help keep children connected to the world around them and can open them up to learning new things. One challenge teachers have is finding the balance in providing sensory opportunities without over stimulating a special needs child. One study showed that children with Autism retained more information when it was presented to them while they were using their sense of touch. For example, simply teaching while a child is running their fingers through sand can enhance the learning opportunity without over stimulating them or using plastic stepping stones with dots, ridges, and bumps. Some special needs children have trouble sitting for any period of time in order to focus on a lesson. For these children, it is recommended that they be given the opportunity to sit on products, that will

provide a constant motion. This can be calming for many children, especially those with various levels of Autism. Toys such as sitting discs, therapy balls, and rocking seats allow children to keep moving while at least remaining in a seated position. Teaching a child with special needs can be a challenge, but there are so many helpful toys available. By making many of these toys available in the classroom, children can be stimulated and challenged in areas that need the most development. For parents of special needs children, these toys can help enhance learning at home as well. Budget cuts & more kids in each classroom make it even more imperative that educators have the right products to keep kids on track in school. Maintaining Kids' Toys By Rachel Nunez

It's a fact that the life expectancy of kids toys are short but we have to face the reality; with the high pricing cost of basic commodities nowadays it is really not practical for us to buy toys frequently to replace broken ones. It is therefore important that we teach our kids how to maintain their toys. We know that at one point those toys will be broken but what we could do is to extend the life span of those toys. We should start by keeping track of how many and what kinds of toys of our kids have. Let us have a record which contains information such as when we bought it and when it was broken. You could also include when a toy is lost or if it would be found. It is like a record of incoming and outgoing toys from our kid So why do we need to have a record? From our record we could easily find out details. How long one toy does lasts in my kid? How frequent do we buy them toys? The record would tell the toy-playing-and-breaking-pattern of our kids. The next step is to watch our kids when they play with their toys. We should observe closely if our kids intentionally break their toys. Sometimes, kids do this because they seek attention from us and they see toys as platform to release pent up emotions. Once this is the case, it is better that we spend more quality time with our kids In some cases, kids' toys will get damaged because they played it too much, which is not really bad but if this happens frequent, we should talk to our kids and tell them the value of their toys. It is never too early to teach our children responsibility We could tell them that taking care of their toy is like us taking care of them. But let us be worthy models for our kids. If our kids see us not organized with our own stuff how could they follow us if we do not practice what we preach? We should remember that maintaining kids' toys is a process, take it one step at a time. We should start by having a "toy box" where our kids will place their toy once they finish playing with it. Another good way on promoting to our kids how to take care of their toys is taking part of their "toy maintenance" like joining them when they are wiping their toys wit when it gathered dust. We should make them feel that they could have fun when they maintain their toys. To sum it up, we must remember that we do not just leave toys to our kids for them to play with until they get broken then we would but them new one. Let us play with our kids and be a part of their lives. One best way to inculcate to our kids the value of responsibility is when we established good relationship with them which is could develop when we join them play and maintain their toys.
