					              Requesting a Letter of Recommendation

              RECOMMENDATION LETTER REQUEST CHECKLIST

Complete the following:
  □ Fill out the Personal Profile and Senior Data forms and return them to your
     counselor before you request a letter of recommendation.
  □ Give your parents the “Parent Letter of Recommendation” sheet. Return the
     completed letter in a sealed envelope to your counselor within (2) days.
  □ Distribute the “Teacher Input Form” to three (3) teachers. Ask teachers to return
     the form to your counselor in a sealed envelope within two (2) days after they
     receive it.

                           STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
            UC & CSU COLLEGES DO NOT REQUIRE A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION.
                   These should not be requested or included in the application.


  When you request a letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher,
                                  be sure to:

    •   Make sure that the person you ask to write your recommendation knows you well.
    •   Make personal contact (preferably via an appointment) with the person you intend
        to ask for a letter of recommendation. NEVER leave a request in a mailbox. In
        person you can ask for a letter of recommendation instead of assuming that one
        will be written. Also, asking is just courteous.
    •   Always be sure to give the writer at least TWO – THREE SCHOOL WEEKS NOTICE
        (preferably more)! This will help ensure that the writer’s schedule will allow him
        or her to respond before your deadline. It takes time to write a good letter and
        you will want the best. Be sure to request an official transcript for your counselor
        to include with the college application. Also give your counselor an addressed
        stamped envelope for each college application. Write Temecula Valley High
        School’s address as the return address on the envelope.
    •   Complete the attached Student Profile and Senior Data forms. These must be
        given to your counselor BEFORE you request a letter of recommendation from
        him or her. Your writer may know you well, but it never hurts to make sure that
        he or she knows all of the important things about you. Your writer will appreciate
        your effort and the letter of recommendation will be better.
    •   Thank the writer. A verbal and/or personal note reflects your manners and an
         understanding of the time and effort given to write your letter of
         recommendation.

                   PARENT LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
As colleges and scholarships become more competitive, it is necessary to create an accurate
and comprehensive profile of your student in a letter of recommendation. Parents can provide
the most in-depth picture of their student complete with anecdotes and background information.

Please write a “LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION” for your student. Your student’s counselor
will select input from staff members and you to develop the best possible reflection of your
student. The extent to which you reply to this request is up to you. PLEASE DO NOT EXCEED
ONE PAGE.

Listed below are some suggested topics to include or address:

   •   most admirable quality

   •   leadership, motivation, energy, sense of adventure

   •   outlook on life

   •   enthusiasm, ability to meet challenges (cite examples if something special comes to
       mind)

   •   examples of responsibility, dependability, maturity

   •   independence, tolerance, understanding

   •   creative qualities, ingenuity, involvement, willingness to risk

   •   ability to meet challenges

   •   peer relations, family dedication

   •   sense of humor

   •   any special or unique characteristics which cannot be overlooked when describing the
       qualities of your student

   •   One unique example is worth more than all of the standard clichés (reach back in your
       memory banks and briefly document when you can).
