These courses have been held at the Leeds General Infirmary for over 10
years and are widely recognised to provide excellent training in this
important aspect of neonatal management.

Neonatal brain imaging is a vital component of paediatric training, both
for those intending to be general Paediatricians as well as those with an
interest in becoming Consultant Neonatologists. It is also suitable for
trainee radiologists and radiographers.

This course combines theory with practical experience in scanning and
requires the trainee to develop his or her own portfolio of scanned cases
that will be assessed and discussed within the group.

The course is designed to start with a one day session (Part I) to give a
sound theoretical understanding of the physics of ultrasound, normal
cranial anatomy and the pathological processes seen in both premature
and full term babies.

The trainee is then expected to develop a portfolio of cases over the next
few months in his/her own hospital, based on hard copy or video images
that will be assessed prior to Part II of the course, which will be run
approximately 6 months after Part I. A certificate of attendance will be
awarded at the end of the course.

FACULTY

Professor Malcolm Levene, Department of Paediatrics & Child Health,
University of Leeds

Dr Rosemary Arthur, Paediatric Radiologist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals
Trust

Dr Helen Woodley, Paediatric Radiologist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals
Trust

Dr Anthony Evans, Dept of Medical Physics, University of Leeds
                       PART I (One Day Course)

                        Physics of ultrasound
                      Normal cerebral anatomy
Haemorrhagic and ischaemic lesions in the newborn infant
Haemorrhagic and ischaemic lesions in the term infant and Doppler
                            assessment

                                  LUNCH

                       Congenital malformations
Significance and long-term outcome of intracranial haemorrhage and
                          perinatal ischaemia
                    Overview of imaging modalities

This one day session details the basics of ultrasound machine setup and
diagnosis. Small group workshops are included.

In the interval between Part I and Part II, the trainee will be expected to
develop a portfolio of five cases in his/her base hospital. This will
comprise a written description of the case, and the images based on a
particular template. One of these cases should comprise sequential
studies on a premature infant with no major abnormalities.

                      PART II (One Day Course)

Each trainee will present one case, followed by discussion.

There will be plenty of time for generalised group discussion to identify
problems arising from the trainee’s experience of practical imaging.

Assessments by: 1. Assessment of portfolio
                       2. Slide and video quiz

Part I of the course will be held on Monday 30 March 2009
The cost of the Part I course will be £150.

The cost of the Part II course will be £100 and will be at a later date.
