American Cancer Society Sponsored “Quit Lines” For Smokers
HWHN’s Healthcare Operations department recently researched smoking cessation
programs and classes in response to a need expressed by a network provider. The
findings revealed the current theory regarding smoking support groups and cessation
classes is that they are ineffective simply because patients fail to attend regularly.
According to the American Cancer Society, the current best practice is to steer patients
toward telephone “quit lines” or online “quit programs” which link them with trained
cessation counselors who provide one-on-one support and advice.
We are all well aware of the harmful effects of cigarette smoking on the health of our
patients, particularly those with diabetes and hypertension. Providing patients with this
free resource will give them the encouragement they need to quit smoking, thereby
decreasing their risks for complications associated with these and other diseases.
Patients may access this program by clicking on the link below or dialing 1-800-QUIT-
NOW. If you have any questions about the program or if you would like a supply of 1-
800-QUIT-NOW brochures or signs for your office please contact Mindy Taylor,
Clinical Coordinator at 423-844-4276.
