TEACHER LAPTOP PROGRAM I got it … now what can I do? WEBINAR TITLE WAS: Engaging Students with Teacher Laptop … CBE TEACHER LAPTOP PROJECT The one to one teacher laptop program, one of the first of its kind in Canada, was developed to assist teachers in meeting the increasingly diverse needs of 21st Century Learners. The project was developed with the context of the CBE’s “ends” as documented in the Three Year Education Plan (2006-2009) and the Alberta Education’s Learning and Technology Policy Framework. CBE TEACHER LAPTOP PROJECT The project is further predicated on our current understandings of best practice and return on investment as per research completed to date. CBE TEACHER LAPTOP PROJECT So we looked at and asked ourselves: What are the teaching practices of a 21st Century Teacher? Then the project was designed to examine the potential for creating technology enhanced environments for teachers and students through the use of the one to one teacher laptops. Teachers will have the ability to access interactive educational resources and develop new learning communities for students and colleagues to share information and acquire new knowledge. In addition, this project was designed to investigate how assessment changes if teaching practice changes. CBE TEACHER LAPTOP PROJECT One of the key strategies to enhance teacher practice is directed at individualizing and personalizing student instruction and assessment. Connections are made that we enhance professional learning for all teachers when access to personal mobile computing devices is provided. CBE TEACHER LAPTOP PROJECT A study by Owston and Wideman (2004) showed that “teachers seemed to see changes in three broad areas when using teacher laptops: enhanced communication, better and easier student tracking and record keeping and greater work flexibility”. Also there were more innovative uses of the technology to support student achievement based on accessibility. CBE TEACHER LAPTOP PROJECT Valdez (2004), also supported the belief about professional development – dependent on the extent to which teachers are given time and access to pertinent computer training. Schools will be at different stages of technology implementation as long as there are disparities in access to professional development and resources. It is clear that the importance of professional development cannot be overemphasized and will therefore be a driving force of the current project. CBE TEACHER LAPTOP PROJECT Teachers respond positively to initiatives that taught them new skills that could be applied immediately. The presence of physical technology resources encouraged exploration with the technologies. Projects that integrated technology into regular curricula were more successful than those that tried stand-alone technological training. The use of lead teachers who have technological skills improved the implementation of technology within classrooms by working with colleagues. So we asked – What are the Best Uses of your Laptop? And Teachers Said: BEST USES – SUGGESTED BY TEACHERS • Paperweight • Door Stop • Cutting Board • Cheese Platter • Placemat • Lap Warming Blanket • Coffee Table Decoration #1 COMMUNICATION Emailing Professional Learning Communities Global Communities Connectivity … #2 RESOURCES / RESEARCH Access to Resources Ability to Research anytime/anywhere Lesson Enhancements Lesson Enrichments Etc. #3 CORRESPONDENCE/REPORTS Letters of Correspondence Legal Contracts Reports Basic Word Processing, etc. #4 PRESENTATIONS Powerpoint Presentations Multimedia Presentations SMART Technologies #5 GRADING PROGRAMS School specific grading programs Excel Spreadsheets Tracking software #6 ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS Administrative documentation such as SIRS, SPED, etc. #7 DESIRE 2 LEARN Effectively using our Learning Management System – D2L Blended classroom instruction PLC development Online Courses, etc. #8 PHOTO MANAGEMENT Photo Storage Photo Manipulation Cropping, Editing Digital Frames Etc. #9 DOCUMENTATION Meeting Notes, Calendar / Scheduler Tracking Notes Etc. #10 Learning New Software Taking e-PD courses Investigating New Software Learning to Use Student Software Finding Resources for use in the classroom Benefits of a Laptop Mobility Multi-tasking Saving time Increased production Literature is consistent in warning that technology by itself will not produce learning gains. Literature is consistent in warning that technology by itself will not produce learning gains. It is unrealistic to expect that one-to-one laptop initiatives will automatically lead to increased student achievement. One-to-one computing works best when combined with careful planning, change management strategies and professional development opportunities. Teachers are calling for an increased amount of professional development, especially training focusing on more innovative pedagogical uses of technology. Increased professional development opportunities for teachers focusing on effective ways to integrate technology should be planned. Pedagogically sound uses of technology need to be identified and championed. Maintain online professional conversations between meetings through the use of tools such as blogs and wikis. Teachers’ daily integration of the laptops is tied closely to the curriculum. They plan Learning and Evaluation Situations in which technology is used as a vehicle to develop competencies. Professional educators are at various stages of development in terms of their understanding and integration of technology in the learning context in the classroom. Professional Development and the use of technology in the classroom is particularly complex because the focus of attention is not on technology, but on the improvement of student learning through more effective instructional practices. Education technology not only plays a role in improving learning through instructional practices, it also acts as a catalyst to facilitate change from a more traditional approach to a greater independence for students towards constructivist learning. SUMMARY OF GREATEST BENEFITS Mobility Multi-tasking Saving time Increased production Technology can support new collaborative professional practices on an anytime / anywhere landscape. Teachers engage in on-going reflection and assessment. FUTURE DIRECTIONS: Educators must develop new organizational and management strategies to support innovative learning in a technology rich environment. Remember that it takes TIME. RESULT OF THE TEACHER LAPTOP PROGRAM This program is changing the educational reality of our School Board – as we continue to grow in our interactions with the learning / technology environment.
