Translator/Program Assistant

Build Change (www.buildchange.org) is an award-winning, international non-profit engineering company
with post-earthquake reconstruction programs in Sumatra, Indonesia and Sichuan, China. Build Change
specializes in earthquake-resistant housing reconstruction and provides hands-on technical assistance and
training directly to homeowners and builders during the rebuilding process. Build Change has the following
position opening, based in the 5-12 earthquake-affected area near Chengdu, China.
Technical Translator/Program Assistant
Department Program
Duty Station Chengdu and Mianzhu, Sichuan, China
Qualifications Degree from a top University in English, Architecture, Engineering, Business or
related field
Fluency in spoken and written English and Mandarin Chinese, with knowledge
of Sichuan dialect preferred
Experience as a professional translator, with CATTI certification preferred
Experience in other social enterprise, engineering company, or non-profit in
China, preferably in disaster response or earthquake reconstruction, or
significant experience living in China
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally
Proven ability to complete tasks on a deadline
Strong organizational skills
Proficiency with internet, Excel, Word and other Office applications
Experiences demonstrating strong communication and/ or leadership skills a
plus
Strong understanding of humanitarian principles/development ethics
Ability to work and live in a rural, post-earthquake environment
Program and Position Description
Management The Translator/ Program Assistant has two main duties :
Responsibilities 1. Translate for the CEO and Asia Programs Director, and perform other
translation tasks as needed.
2. Act as Program Assistant, which includes general duties as assigned
by the CEO or Asia Programs Director.
Responsibilities as Translator
The Translator/ Program Assistant is responsible for verbal and written
translation for the CEO and Asia Programs Director between English and
Mandarin Chinese in a variety of situations, including translation for/ with:
A. Construction Professionals
B. Government officials
C. National NGO representatives
D. Research materials
E. Industry executives
F. Other individuals and situations
The Translator/ Assistant will be responsible for taking comprehensive notes on
specified meetings/ conversations and keeping track of individuals names and
contact information as directed by the program manager.
Note: Translation of conversation or text must be kept to a direct translation of
spoken or written language and the translator must not alter, add emphasis or de-
emphasize, or in any way change the meaning of content of the conversation or text
without direct instruction or acknowledgement from Supervisor.

Responsibilities as Program Assistant
Support Asia Programs Director to compile weekly impact monitoring
data
Compile success stories with written, still photo, and video format,
and prepare reports to donors and other parties
Support program team with research on building materials costs and
availability and update bills of quantity
Support program team to create a functional filing system, both electronic and
paper, and ensure data is regularly backed up
Provide general logistical support to Asia Programs Director and
CEO, such as communicating with drivers and support staff
Take notes in the field on activities and processes
Manage schedule along with the Asia Programs Director and CEO
Manage information and communications for and with the Asia
Programs Director and CEO including e-mailing, composing data
tables and analysis, composition of letters, and other material.
Work with other Build Change employees as directed by the Asia
Programs Director or CEO
Coordinate the logistics for and hosting of international visitors, such
as Build Change board members, and donors
Plan meetings and other events
Join reconnaissance trips and meetings in other earthquake-affected
areas
Maintain and expand relationships with government officials and
project partners
Other organizational and or logistical tasks, as needed
Starting Salary Range: RMB 2,000 – 3,500 per month before tax, based on experience.
