Happy July Birthdays to Krissy S (7/7), Uri L (7/19) and Dave G (7/30). Congratulations to Bryan Hughes,
who attended the Western Zone Select Camp in early June. He traveled to SoCal with 24 other 13-14 boys for a
weekend of training and fun. Congratulations on great May attendance to Marissa B, Katrina A & Bryan H
(100%); Nick S, Andrew S & Catherine B (96%); Allison B, Theresa M & Kristine D (95%); Kyle L (93%);
Bridget M, Maggie W, Danielle S & Josh M (92%) and Chris G, Brandon C & Karen W (90%).

We have a number of meets coming in July. The JO meet will see many of our members swimming both
individual and relay events. A small group will be attending the Clovis State Championships the same
weekend. One week after JO’s is the SRVLA C/B/A+ meet. If you don’t have any Far Westerns times, you
should be entering that meet NOW. If you wait it will be closed. We plan a big team push at the Far Western
meet, so once again, all individual and relay events are on the table. Some members may want to swim the
OPTIONAL Walnut Creek meet (25 yards) in mid-August. There will be practices available until Friday 8/14.
We will then be on break and return to the water on TUESDAY 9/8 (the day after Labor Day).

The Pre Senior group continued to re-write the PLS All Time Top Ten list with three new team records and
multiple additions to the Top Ten list. Their sizzling performance at the Orinda meet included many new cuts
and Lifetime Best Times (LTB).
Highlights include the following: 11-12 Girls – Eva Chung – 7/8 LTB, new Pacific Recognition Time (PRT)
100/200 breast; Maggie Kauffeld - 7/8 LTB, new Junior Olympic (JO) 50/100 Fly; Rachel Knowles - 7/8 LTB,
new Team Records 100/200 free/100 Fly; Cate MacGregor - 5/7 LTB, new Far Western (FW) 100 fly, new JO
100 back; Lillian Sun - 7/8 LTB, new FW 200 free; Katie Woods - 4 LTB, new FW 100 free; Moriah Simonds -
100% LTB; 11-12 boys - Maxime Rooney - new FW 100/200 free; 13-14 girls - Bridget Booe - 7/7 LTB, new
"A" 100 breast; Elise Cox - LTB 100 free/100 fly; 13-14 boys - Nick Johnston - 7/7 LTB, new PRT 100 back,
new FW 100 free; Brian Lee - 6/8 LTB.
Way to go! We are picking up steam heading into JO’s and Far Westerns and I looking forward to some great
swims and a ton of fun. Also, remember that the deadline for NACC and Western Zone All Star team
applications are due before the start of finals on Sunday July 19th at the Junior Olympic meet. Information and
applications can be found on the Pacific Swimming web site www.pacswim.org
Relays for JO’s have been posted at the pool. We are putting a very heavy team emphasis on both JO’s and Far
Westerns this season and relays are critical to our success. Each swimmer that is on a relay team has received a
parent notification form that need to be signed and returned to Coach Todd. This is the best way to ensure that
all swimmers are aware of their expected participation. If you have any questions please see Coach Todd. We
will follow the same procedure for Far Westerns. Far Western relays will be posted following Junior Olympics.

Keep working hard and let’s get ready to swim fast.

Each month the group has voted for whom they thought was the most inspiring swimmer in the group for that month. The
winner for this month was Maya Gilchrist. Maya is always positive and encouraging to all of her teammates. It is pleasing
and inspiring to watch the group as a whole support each other in and out of the water everyday.

Outstanding attendance during the previous month was established by: Analese Chinn(85%), Alex Gilchrist(80%), Perry
Jia(80%), Kayla Lindsay(80%), Kyle Oslund(85%), and RJ Scott(90%). This was some of the best overall attendance
from the group this season!!! Nice job on your dedication! Your consistency will pay off when it comes time to race in the
meets.

The TIGR meet was another great long course meet. Maya Gilchrist raced well in her events. Morgan, Shruti, Analese, and
Kayla all swam well in many of their races! Adrien Rooney made his first FW qualifying time! Alex Gilchrist lowered
many of his times. RJ Scott had several great races. Kyle also had some outstanding races over the weekend. Perry Jia and
Andrew Song both races well in one of their first long course meets ever.

Special notes: Be sure that you are warming-up and warming-down properly before and after your races. Please come ask
me if you are not sure what you should be doing. Make it a habit to be at the meets by 7:30 that way the swimmers have
plenty of time to adequately warm-up for the meet. This is a great way to set them up for success at meets.

Also, entry forms are due in the entries box on the Friday two weeks before any given meet so that the swimmer can
appear on the split sheets.

See you on the pool deck,

Coach Joe

The TIGR meet produced many new best times for our swimmers. Emma and Meg showed great fortitude by swimming
in their first 400 freestyle. Beverly Fu and Laura Taylor did great in their races. Michael Martin and Rishab Nair did well
in all of the events they swam in. Arnold Chan did very well in his swims. Robert Shi and Jeffrey Wang did great in their

Hello everyone! First of all, I would like thank the group moms and all the other volunteers who helped to make
our summer kick of party such a success! The swimmers had a wonderful time and really appreciate your efforts
in making that special event possible.

Please remember that all swimmers who wear a cap to practice, need to be wearing a PLS cap. If you have lost
or ripped yours, you can easily order new ones via the team web-site www.pleasantonseahawks.org. Simply
click on the “store” tab at the top of the page and follow the directions to print out an order form for team caps.

As of right now, swim fins, a kickboard, and a water bottle are required equipment for our group. When we
come back for our new swim season in Sept., all Intermediate swimmers (both I and II) will also be required to
have a Finis center mount swim snorkel as well. These snorkels are a wonderful training tool and already
required in all of the groups above ours. You can order yours at www.swimshop.com (Norcal-our team
equipment provider). The item number is SN100P for swimmers ages 12 & up and SN100P-JYR for swimmers
under age 12. The cost is $39.95. Your swimmers are welcome to purchase them right away and start bringing
them to practice. I will let kids use them as optional equipment until they are required in Sept. Note: They
generally come with a nose clip; swimmers should keep these and wear them when they wear their snorkel.

Many swimmers in our group are having trouble figuring out what the time standards are for their age group.
They can locate these time standards in their 2009 Pacific swimming hand book, or by going to
http://www.pacswim.org/page/times_standards.html#anchor1290581 and clicking on their age/gender.
Swimmers in our group should have an understanding of what “B” and “A” times are and where to find them for
goal setting purposes.
Just a reminder that we have the opportunity to train long course on many Monday & Wednesday mornings this
summer!
         Summer Morning Workout Schedule
        Mondays: 6/29, 7/6, 7/13, & 7/20
        Time: 6:30-7:30 AM *
        Wednesdays: 6/24, 7/1, 7/8, 7/15, & 7/22
        Time: 6:00-7:30 AM

Special Note: Plan on arriving at least 20 min. before practice and staying 20 min. after practice, as we will need
to set the pool up for long course before we begin and then change it back to short course when we are finished.
*Note the different start time for practices on Mondays!
Swimmers who choose to go long course, should only go to morning practice, not again in the afternoon
(only 1 practice per day). I STRONGLY encourage swimmers to take advantage of this opportunity. Often, my
swimmers are surprised to find out how much fun it is (and that it’s really not as “scary as it sounds”)! There is
often a “tasty” treat for those who get up early☺

I know we are into the summer travel season. Please be sure to send me an email or have your swimmers tell me
before you go out of town, especially if you will be missing more than a week of practice. Thank you to those of
you who have already done this!

You will be getting blast emails from the team every time a meet sheet is posted, but not all of these meets are
meant for the swimmers in our group. Please check any emails against the following list of meets. The meets
I’ve listed are the ones appropriate for the swimmers in our group. Please remember that a copy of your entries is
due in the “Entries” box at the pool the Friday BEFORE the entries are due to the meet. If you enter online, just

print out an extra copy of your confirmation and put it in the “Entries” box right away so you don’t miss the
deadline.

Up-coming events for the Intermediate Group:
*Please enter meets as soon as they are posted as the last few meet have closed several days BEFORE
their deadlines. Summer meets will close especially early since there is only one meet per month for swimmers of
our ability level.
July 16-19: JO’s (Note: this is a qualifying meet, meaning you have to have “JO times” in order to enter. None
of the swimmers in our group have these times, however some swimmers may be asked by the coaching staff to
be part of relays.)
July 25-26: SRVLA C/B/A+ Long Course meet
August 14-16: WCAB C/B/A Short Course Meet
August 17-September 7: Pleasanton Seahawks Break, there will not be practice
September 8: First day of practice for the 2008-2009 Season

Happy 4th of July!

Meet’s have been closing rather quickly these days & we seem to be getting shut out rather regularly… If
you sign-up as soon as the Meet Sheet is posted & you’re notified by the PLS Seahawks e-mail notices, then
you should be fine…

We had two June Birthdays as Eli Chin (turned 12) & Alex Xu (turned 11) both celebrated on the 9th of the
month. For July, Matthew Huo will be our only Birthday, as he turns 12 on the 25th. Happy Birthday to
everyone, I hope you have a great time…

Here’s another reminder to come to the next PLS Bingo Night in Livermore (Sat, July 11th & 25th, 6:30pm at
3070 Pacific Ave, Livermore). This is for Parent’s of the Intermediate 1 Group, and their friends (18&over
only, please)… Please be sure to check in with the PLS Coaches in attendance, there is a sign-up sheet for you
to make sure that we get the proper credit…

I’ll leave you this month with another reminder to wear clothes & shoes to & from practice, bring water bottles
to practice every day, AND DRINK THEM. When our kids are getting cramps, it’s almost always because they
are showing early signs of dehydration & their bodies are breaking down. Combat this with plenty of water…

Thank you & we'll see you on deck,
Coach Jon

Kudos to Isabella Chin and Resha Panda, who distinguished themselves at the Memorial Day Tiger Meet in
Stockton. Isabella achieved an A time in 50M breaststroke, and Resha earned new best times in 100M
freestyle, 50M breaststroke (A time), and 50M butterfly.

Reminder: In this hot weather, swimmers should wear sunscreen as well as something on their feet. In addition,
they should bring water bottles and drink from them during practice.

Good job, swimmers!

Thanks. See you on deck.

Hey Guys!
Summer is now here and the days are getting much warmer, make sure you’re bringing water to drink during
practice. I would like to congratulate Daniel Golubchik , and Juliet Lee, Rachana Mukkamala moving up to the
Novice group with Coach Allen this month! I hope everyone goes to Bing Night on May 30th, it should be a fun
time. I also want to encourage all of my pre-novice swimmers to sign up for the Orinda C/B/A+ meet, June 27-
28. Hope to see you there!
See you on deck!
