A Brief History of the Ohio Journal of Science

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE1 GLENN W. BLAYDES Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 10 The November 1950 issue of THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE marked the fiftieth anniversary of this publication. The contents of the fifty volumes of THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE is a fine record of the achievements in science by scientists at the Ohio State University and throughout Ohio, over a period of half a century. In November 1900 the first issue of the OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY NATURALIST was published as the official organ of the Biological Club of the Ohio State University. This organization has continued to the present as the Biology Club. With the publication of the third issue, the name was shortened to the OHIO NATURALIST. In 1903 the Ohio Academy of Science accepted the Naturalist as its official organ. In 1912 the name was again changed to the OH I O NATURALIST AND JOURNAL OF SCIENCE. Numerous important papers in the fields of biology were published in the Naturalist and have been widely cited. In 1915 the science departments of the University organized the Ohio State University Scientific Society, with the Biological Club as a section of this organization. The Biological Club proposed that the OHIO NATURALIST AND JOURNAL OF SCIENCE be made more comprehensive to represent and serve more adequately the various areas of science in the University. The title was changed to THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE, and responsibility for its publication was vested in the O. S. U. Scientific Society. The development of several science organizations in various areas resulted in reduced interest in the Scientific Society, when in 1927 it ceased to function. Control of the JOURNAL went to the Ohio Journal of Science Board of the Ohio State University. This arrangement continued until 1932 when a closer relationship between the JOURNAL and the Ohio Academy of Science was established. Arrangements were made for THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE to be controlled jointly by the Ohio Academy of Science and the Ohio State University. The control of the JOURNAL was placed under the Joint Administrative Board. This Board consisted of four members, two appointed by the Ohio Academy of Science and two by the Ohio State University. This arrangement has continued successfully to the present time. Members of the Board are Dr. Edmund M. Spieker, Chairman, and Dr. Bernard S. Meyer, as representatives of the University, and Dr. Wilbur M. Tidd, the Ohio State University, and Dr. R. A. Hefner, Miami University, electives of the Ohio Academy of Science. THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE is published bimonthly, with the six issues of a year appearing during the months of January, March, May, July, September, and November. Scientific papers are accepted for publication from Academy members or non-members in all fields of science. The last volume contained 306 pages, made up of 46 papers contributed by outstanding research scientists in the fields of Anthropology, Bacteriology, Botany, Chemistry, Conservation, Ecology, Engineering, Entomology, Genetics, Geography, Geology, Medicine, Ornithology, Physiology, and Zoology. The circulation of THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE is at present nearly 1700 copies. Of this number, 1200 go to the membership of the Ohio Academy of Science. Foreign exchanges amount to about 250; domestic exchanges to about 150. The publications received in exchange are deposited in the Ohio State University Library. A conservative estimate of the value of these exchanges is $1800.00 annually. Each issue of THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE is mailed to 439 libraries, department publication 533. THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE 51(4): 205, July, 1951. 206 GLENN W. BLAYDES Vol. L I mostly those of colleges and universities in the United States and 79 foreign countries distributed in Asia, Europe, South America, and Africa. THE OHIO JOURNAL OF SCIENCE is financed by annual contributions from the Ohio State University, and by about an equal amount from the Ohio Academy of Science. The Academy contributes $1.50 from the annual dues of each member. Some additional funds are obtained from the sale of reprints and back numbers, and starting during the past year, from solicited advertising. On January 1, 1951, Dr. Earl L. Green of the Department of Zoology and Entomology became Editor-in-Chief, succeeding the writer. Dr. Richard A. Popham of the Department of Botany and Plant pathology is Business Manager, with Dr. Richard H. Bohning, of the same department, as Advertising Representative. Dr. Curtis M. Wilson of the University of Toledo is in charge of book reviews.
