Although sporting results (in terms of winning) have been mixed over those 140 years, we have had long periods when Wesley enjoyed great success in fielding winning teams. The first 20 years of the 20th century was one such period, under the guidance of LA Adamson. AdamsonwasanOld Rugbeian, who tried to create at Wesley the Rugby ideal of muscular christianity. He summed up his purpose in his favourite watch words “strenuousness and sentiment”. From 1933 to 1954 came another successful period with ten cricket premierships under the watchful eye of PL Williams. After losing every game of football in 1958, Laurie Humphries coached five successive premiership teams. Since 1987, when girls were first represented in senior sport, Wesley have won 31 premierships across ten girls sports. A truly remarkable record. However, it must be remembered winning is a passing thing. Associated Public Schools (APS) sport is not for coaches, not for parents, not for old scholars and not for school exploitation, but for students. APS sport teaches players to be selfless, relatetopeopleofvaryingabilitiesandtotreatthemasequals, tomakefriends andalsohowtowinandloseandtobeableto“treatthosetwoimpostersjustthe same”. Coaches, parents and schools must realise the game is only important while it lasts. We would be doing a great disservice to the memory of teachers like Stewart, Mitchell, Williams, Kroger, Phillips, Wells and Humphries, to mention just a few, if we were not able to echo the words of Sir Henry Newbolt, “To set the cause above renown To love the game beyond the prize.” olympianS ATHLETE SirFrankBeaurepaire JohnBartram Peter Bennett ErnWagstaff BlairDixon Bob Duncan Daryl Cohen Donald(Ian)Allen Peter Guest David Gourley Paul Guest Murray Chessell Peter Ridgway Ross Langdon Rodney Woods Antony Guss Paul Nash Alistair Guss Richard Biggins Robert Crowe JodieDobson Nick Harrison Katie Mactier Michael Nakamura Mark Philippoussis Michael Klim ShirleyZhou Natalie Porter Michael Robertson EllenSteele Peter Shakespear Jennifer Holiday Pam Westendorf Natalie Titcume Kate Richardson (Anderson) PEER YEAR 1909 1942 1942 1946 1947 1949 1953 1955 1955 1956 1956 1961 1968 1969 1971 1976 1977 1982 1985 1986 1987 1988 1992 1994 1994 1996 1997 1998 2000 2001 FormerStaff FormerStaff FormerStaff Current Staff Current Staff GAMES YEAR 1908 /1920 / 1924 1948 1952 /1956 1960 1956 1956 1960 1956 1960 1956 1960 / 1964 / 1968 1968 1976 1976 1976 1980 1976 1984 1988 1992 1992 2004 2004 1996 / 2000 1996 / 2000 / 2004 1996 / 2000 / 2004 1996 / 2000 2004 2006 2000 1972 / 1976 1996 1980 2000 / 2004 1996 / 2000 SPoRT swimming athletics waterpolo sailing gymnastics rowing weightlifting rowing rowing gymnastics rowing gymnastics pentathlon waterpolo waterpolo skiing swimming skiing skiing cycling rowing athletics cycling baseball tennis swimming tabletennis basketball skiing paralympics/swimming rowing softball rowing softball athletics world championS (wc) world record holderS (wr) ATHLETE SirFrankBeaurepaire Emma Carney PEER YEAR 1909 1989 YEAR 1910 (WR) / 1920 / 1921 1994 & 1997 (WC) 1995, 1996, 1997 & 1998 (World No 1) 1994 (WC-junior) 2005 (WC) 1999 (WC) 1996 / 1997 / 1998 (WR) / 1999 / 2000 1998 (WC-junior) SPoRT swimming triathlon Clare Carney Katie Mactier Sharelle McMahon Michael Klim Rahna Demarte 1991 1992 1995 1996 1999 triathlon cycling netball swimming cycling commonwealth gameS ATHLETE TedBest Peter Bennett Daryl Cohen Paul Nash Dean Kenneally Katie Mactier Rachael Dacy Sharelle McMahon Michael Klim TimWilliams Kate Richardson (Anderson) PEER YEAR 1932 1942 1953 1977 1984 1992 1994 1995 1996 1999 current staff GAMES YEAR 1938 1950 1958 1978 1994 2006 1998 1998 / 2002 / 2006 1998 / 2006 2002 1998 SPoRT athletics waterpolo weightlifting swimming athletics cycling polevault netball swimming athletics athletics SportS adminiStration esley has not only produced many students who have competed at the highest levels in sport - many students have also become sports administrators at the elite level.
