Course Description: This seminar is a biographically driven history of mission that informs the student about the major missions movements including those led by the Apostle Paul, Celtic Christians, Roman Catholics in the 16th century, and by Protestants in the 19th and 20th centuries. Missionary motivations and methods will be examined in light of the great challenge of missions in the 21st century. II. Course Aims: (1) To identify the key figures and movements in the history of the Christian missions. (2) To identify and critically evaluate the theological, spiritual and missional contributions of these individuals and movements in the life of the church, and (3) To challenge and encourage students to see how they fit into this ongoing history. Course Requirements and Grading Students taking this class for academic credit will complete: A. Interaction Papers: In these papers you will provide a summation and critique of the assigned reading for the week. Length: Two to three pages, typed, double-spaced. Two of the twelve weekly papers may be dropped with no penalty (=10 papers required). 30 percent of your grade. B. Two (2) five to seven page book reviews: Roland Allen’s Missionary Methods and Philip Jenkins The Next Christendom. 30% of your grade. C. A final term paper, on a topic to be approved in advance by the instructor. This paper is to be 16 to 20 pages in length, double-spaced. 30% of your grade. D. The final 10% of your grade will be based on your interaction in class. Summary of Grade Weights: Interaction Papers (10 due) Review Papers (2 due) Term Paper Class Interaction Possible: 30% 30% 30% 10% 100% Papers are expected to follow the standards published in the SLTS Style Guide, with an appropriate reduction in grade for non-compliance. Final grades will be assigned according to the scale in the current SLTS Academic Catalog. Late Work Policy: All assignments are due on the date indicated. Late work will be assessed a penalty of a full letter grade for every week late, deducted from the grade which would have been given had the assignment been turned in on time. V.
