Castle Hill was built in 1730 as the Earl Fortescue’s family home in North Devon. The Palladian House, in which his descendants, the Earl and Countess of Arran are living, is set in an 18th century parkland landscape with grass terraces and statues leading down to the river and lakes. Hugh Fortescue laid out the landscape in the ‘Versailles’ style with focal points such as the Triumphal Arch, Sham Castle on the hill behind the house and various temples.
In the mid 1800’s the Temple was enlarged and was 12 Sunset house later tragically gutted by fire in 1934. The 5th Earl 13 The Castle Fortescue re-built the house in its’ original Palladian 14 New Magnolia Glade design, as you see it today.

We would like to welcome you to Castle Hill and are so pleased to be able to share these wonderful gardens with you. Around Easter you will see many pink, red and white camellias along the slopes, interspersed with lofty magnolias and early rhododendrons. Winter snowdrops and hosts of daffodils are followed by carpets of primroses and bluebells under the giant Beeches, just showing their translucent lime green leaves in May. The later rhododendrons and azaleas filling the air with their sweet scent look at their best in May, as does the beloved Handkerchief Tree on the south west lawn. From June onwards there are flowering shrubs such as Philadelphus, Weigelas, Hoherias and our new experiment with shrub roses which will be in bloom before the Hydrangeas, Eucryphias and Agapanthus burst into flower. From mid June the Millennium Garden on the east side of the house starts looking lovely, shades of blue and cream dominate the box edged borders before the lavender turns into a “river” through Xa Tollemache’s cleverly designed garden. In late summer the woodland garden becomes a haven of tranquillity for walks by the water, vistas and 18th Century structures. We are trying to label the shrubs more accurately, so if you do not agree with any names please do write the correct one in the Comments Book at the ticket entrance. Do ask our Gardeners (Gordon, Chris, Brian and Raymond) any questions, as you may well meet them going about their daily routine. We encourage you to stay on the many paths and wear sensible walking shoes as the grassy slopes can be very slippery, even in dry weather. Thank you for visiting us, please come again during the year.
