Title: Online Marketing Summer Intern

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: % of Time
This is a summer internship for the Consumer Marketing group at Britannica – a 240 yr. leader in knowledge
publishing and learning. The intern chosen will work closely with all consumer marketing teams on the
consumer online re-invention of one of the biggest consumer brands in the world. The consumer group at
Britannica consists of New Product Development (creating brand extension products/services), New
Customer Acquisition (finding new customers on the web), Premium Services (markets premium content
online subscriptions for www.britannica.com and http://student.britannica.com ), Data Analytics (assessment
of marketing efforts to establish strategic direction), E-Commerce (online sale of Britannica “assets”), and
Free Site Development which helps drive traffic to Britannica and delivers an engaging experience to
encourage exploration with (and hopeful purchase of) the many historically proven quality assets of the
The traffic to these sites comes mostly from SEO and organic search marketing done through search
engines, however we are always looking for new and innovative ways to drive qualified traffic and revenue
through strategic partnerships, affiliate/affinity marketing, direct-to-consumer marketing, social marketing,
and bulk re-distribution. The intern is encouraged to present new innovative ideas for driving traffic and
revenue to our properties.
Specifically, you will assist in managing projects aimed at driving revenue from new business and new
product ventures, and assist with programs designed to drive free trials to our premium services products
through affiliate, affinity, SEM, and strategic partner efforts. Specific tasks follow:
New Product Development and New Customer Acquisition Marketing team 35%
• Check affiliate sites for correct messaging/offers, and identify other opportunities for marketing on
affiliate publisher sites.
• Upload new videos on ad-rev share outbound video sites (Daily Motion, 5min)
• Maintain stats and help create/implement marketing campaigns to help grow Britannica TestPrep
and Britannica Tutor services
Data Analytics 35%
• Subscription reporting by marketing channel
• Ad Hoc reporting from Omniture, ComScore, Hitwise databases to determine best new channels
for acquisition, and identify avenues for optimization of existing channels
• Weekly and Monthly Subscription tracking reports to determine effectiveness of consumer
• Marketing Intranet site maintenance and other data management tasks

• Help the Premium Services, Ecommerce and Free Site Development departments with additional
marketing, business development, product, advertising/creative, and site development projects, as
• Assistance with the preparation of management presentations, board reports, and strategy
SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Training: Marketing related educational and field training preferred.
Experience: No prior experience required, however knowledge of community sites, affiliate marketing, search
engine marketing, and premium content subscription marketing will be helpful .
Skills/Knowledge: Excellent verbal and written communication, data analysis, and research skills. Strong attention to
detail. Ability to work well in a fast-paced, changing environment. Familiarity with MS Excel
preferred.. Strong MS Office Suite skills helpful. Computer proficiency required.
Key qualities: Self-starter, strong communicator, diplomatic and tenacious. Good negotiating skills and
consumer marketing understanding will be helpful..
Other Requirements: Interest in e-commerce and marketing. Efficient, solution-oriented, self-starter. Detail-oriented
individual who learns quickly, works independently, and possesses strong initiative.
