HEATING OIL PRICES HAVE RISEN, BUT FUTURE IS UNCERTAIN
In our June edition, we reported that Mass Energy Average Prices
this past heating oil season, Mass Energy
members saved about 40 cents per gallon
compared to the average retail heating $2.50
oil dealer in the state, according to the
Massachusetts Department of Energy $2.40
Resources. In May, Mass Energy
                                                  $2.30
members were paying about $1.85.
Unfortunately, the wholesale market for $2.20
heating oil has risen quite a bit since then
and has pushed retail prices closer to $2.10
$2.40. But the market has been volatile,
with quite a few days under $2.00, as $2.00
you can see by the graph to the right.
Oil industry experts are not sure $1.90
where prices will go this year, mostly
                                                  $1.80
because no one knows for certain how
much the economy will recover—and $1.70
fundamentally, heating oil prices are
greatly influenced by the demand for $1.60
heating oil. Oil market traders may
be tempted to speculate that prices
will rise, which would further cause
prices to rise beyond what would make
sense fundamentally, as we saw last
year. But we’re hoping that the Obama
administration will monitor their activity
and if they do, take enforcement action which might put a limit on how far
prices can fall. However, we do not Sick of All the Paper?
as necessary. And there’s hope: we have
noticed this administration is watching imagine crude oil prices will reach $100 Sign up to receive this

PRICE WARS IN SOME AREAS
We have seen that dealers are engaging
in price wars in some parts of the state,
notably the upper North Shore and
Worcester County. We welcome that, for
our members’ sake and all consumers’.
Last year, our members in that area were
saving a bundle because dealers who
were not affiliated with Mass Energy
tried to increase their margin per gallon.
This year, our competitors are trying to
increase their market share by dropping
their margins. And they are probably
still selling oil that they bought at low
prices last spring. But they do not have
an endless supply of that cheaper oil.
When it runs out and they begin buying
at current wholesale prices, their retail
price will change.
For new members, we encourage you season goes on. But our system limits In other words, you may hear of a dealer
