"The History of Stepping Stones Child Development Center"
The History of Stepping Stones Child Development Center Sue Kinosian, owner of New Berlin Therapies, had a dream to be able to provide high quality, inclusive child care to the families and employees of New Berlin Therapies. Stepping Stones Child Development Center was established in December of 1998. The center is licensed for 23 children. Families receiving services, from New Berlin Therapies, expressed the need for child care, but also expressed the discomfort of sending their child/children, with special needs, to a center not qualified to provide the appropriate care. Also, staff and therapists of New Berlin Therapies also expressed the need for child care and the interest in the convenience of on-site child care. So, Sue, along with several other supporters, began the process of setting up Stepping Stones. Initially Stepping Stones was to be a for profit center, but additional research proved a non-profit center would be most beneficial to providing high quality, inclusive child care. A non-profit status would allow more funding opportunities for accommodating and would also allow teachers a slightly higher pay scale than what was average. Also, an evaluation of enrollment needs, within New Berlin Therapies, resulted in the center being able to provide care to the community of New Berlin as well. The mission of Stepping Stones was to rise above what was considered “typical” in child care and focus on the individual child within a developmentally appropriate setting. Therefore, it was important for the center to remain small and promote a family friendly environment. In addition, New Berlin Therapies would be a great support to the staff of Stepping Stones in order to make inclusion more successful. Stepping Stones will be in operation 7 years this December. The center is known for providing high quality child care for children of all abilities. Stepping Stones is NAEYC accredited and upholds the highest standards of developmentally appropriate practices. The dream continues as Stepping Stones embarks on expanding to the Milwaukee area. Being able to reach out to other communities allows the center to expand the dream and continue to turn obstacles into stepping stones for children of all abilities.
