A HISTORY OF THE PENTAGON Go to this website: http://pentagon.afis.osd.mil/history.cfm There you will find a film that takes approximately 30 minutes to view. Watch the film, stop it as needed and take notes on the important topics. Do the following writing assignment:       Head your paper: THE PENTAGON Create a written summary of the film from your notes. (Don’t throw your notes away as they are required to be turned in as well.) Write in paragraph form. You should have at least 5 paragraphs of 4-5 sentences each. Write a conclusion that includes what you feel was the most interesting thing you learned about the Pentagon. Create a new heading: THE AMERICAN SPIRIT Write a paragraph of what you learned about the spirit of people in America from the film. GOOGLE EARTH – WASHINGTON D.C. MONUMENTS & BUILDINGS Go to this website to download Google Earth if the computer you are working on does not have it already. http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html Once you are on the home page for Google Earth, you will see a menu on the left. Look under the section titled “LAYERS” and check to see if the following boxes are checked. If not, please check them before you begin. Terrain, Geographic Web, Roads, and 3D Buildings. If you’ve never used Google Earth before you might want to do some experimenting with it before completing this assignment. Have fun. Find your own house, school, etc. When you’re ready type WASHINGTON D.C. into the window under the words FLY TO near the top of the menu. Then hit ENTER and you will be flown to your destination. Practice using the controls in the upper right hand corner. The horizontal bar at the top will tilt the map so that you can see from another angle rather than from straight overhead The center circle will always show you where North is and you can maneuver in many directions around an area by clicking on the arrows or dragging the outer circle with your cursor. The vertical bar with the + at the top and – at the bottom will zoom you in or out of an area. Just experiment with each controller until you figure out what it does. This controller disappears as you zoom in, but if you scroll over its area, it reappears so you can use it. You can also zoom in by double clicking the cursor when it turns into a hand over a specific area. Click again to stop the zoom. START 1. Zoom in until you can see some street names and building begin to appear. You’ll be seeing lots of purple, blue, and orange balls appearing as well. 2. You are looking for the NATIONAL MALL located between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive. Its an open area with few buildings that stretches from east to west. 3. Let the cursor scroll over some of the colored balls. Notice how they identify locations. If you are lucky, you will find the Washington Monument. It stand in the center of the National Mall, so once you find it you’re in good shape. 4. Once you locate the Washington Monument, zoom in so you can see it and then use the horizontal bar at the top to view the monument at a better angle. 5. Notice that the balls change color to black and eventually become little cameras. Click on one and notice that there is a title for that photo in red printing at the bottom of the picture. 6. ASSIGNMENT: a) On a piece of paper, write WASHINGTON MONUMENT. b) Under that write the titles of AT LEAST 10 different photos of the Washington Monument. c) Under the last photo, tell which photo you liked the best & why. d) Find each of the following monuments or buildings in or around the NATIONAL MALL and do steps a) through c) for each one. LINCOLN MEMORIAL (west of the Washington Monument) VIETNAM MEMORIAL (northeast of Lincoln Memorial) KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL (southeast of Lincoln Memorial) WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL (between Washington Monument & Lincoln Memorial) U.S. CAPITOL BUILDING (opposite end from Lincoln, east of the Washington Monument) JEFFERSON MEMORIAL (go south from Washington Monument across a pond) WHITE HOUSE (north of the Washington Monument) U.S. SUPREME COURT (east of the Capitol Bldg) PENTAGON (southwest of the Lincoln Memorial, across the Potomac River) You will only find a couple of cameras here. Why do you think that is? Locate the area where Flight 77 hit the building.
