U.S. Family Rescue Report The following is a list of Falun Gong practitioners in the PRC who are prisoners of conscience and have family members residing in the United States Please note that actual information regarding the detention and maltreatment of Falun Gong practitioners is strictly guarded by the Chinese Government. The following are general descriptions of each case based on information obtained from family members. A recent photo has been enclosed where available. Mr. Zhiwen Wang, 50, government official - father of Xiaodan Danielle Wang (a student at the University of Texas, Austin). Mr. Wang was one of four volunteer contact persons of the Beijing Falun Dafa Association who was sentenced to a 16-year prison term. The little news that filters out of the PRC to Danielle and her family is vague and disconnected, and letters are not allowed in or out. They heard that he had been forced to sit on a small bench for seven straight days without food, water, or sleep. He has been tortured to make him renounce his belief in Falun Gong, but he has consistently refused to succumb. One day a phone call from China reached Danielle's mother and it was Zhiwen. The entire conversation was about their daughter. That was almost two years ago and was his family’s last contact with Zhiwen. The last news about him was that he was transferred to Chadianzhan Labor Camp, Tianjin. Danielle Wang could be contacted by phone at 512-481-8681. Mr. Yuhui Zhang, 37, -- husband of Ms. Celia Wang (resident of New York). Mr. Zhang is a graduate from the Department of International Trade, Beijing University of Foreign Trade. He moved to Macau as an immigrant in the early 1990s. After the event of April 25, 1999 when thousands of Falun Gong practitioners peacefully appealed for the release of arrested practitioners in Beijing, Mr. Zhang organized a press conference in Macau in order to clarify to the media Yuhui Zhang together with his why Falun Gong practitioners had gone to Beijing. daughter and son in Macao in 1998. Shortly after the persecution started in July 1999, Mr. Zhang published a series of articles under his pen name “He Shi Lao.” These articles were posted on many websites and influential Chinese newspapers including The World Journal, telling readers what Falun Gong is and the truth about China’s crackdown. In November 1999, Mr. Zhang was arrested in Zhuhai and sent to the Kaiping Detention Center in Guangdong. Thanks to international appeals, he was released on December 25, 1999. However, on December 18, 2000, he suddenly disappeared in Zhuhai once again. One month passed before the police in Zhuhai finally informed Mr. Zhang’s wife that her husband had been arrested and charged with “trying to overthrow the government.” On Oct 11, 2001, 1 U.S. Family Rescue Report Chinese authority opened a court case against Mr. Zhang. However, the Zhuhai Court judge adjudicated that the case was paradoxical and could not be held. Despite this decision, the Zhuhai police bureau continued to illegally detain him in their custody. Recently, Zhang has been secretly sentenced to ten years for authoring pro-Falun Gong articles. Mr. Zhang is currently detained in Meixi No.2 Detention Center of ZhuHai City, Guangdong Province. Ms. Yanyun Huang, Mr. Anhua He, Ms. Haiyan He, and Mr. Haiou He -- mother, father, younger sister, and younger brother of Mr. Haiying He (MD, Ph.D., biomedical researcher at Harvard University and a resident of the state of Massachusetts). • Mr. Haiou He (brother), 31, medical doctor, was first detained in October 1999 for a month in a “brainwashing center” located in Dadukou district, Chongqing, where he was forced to watch programs produced by CCTV (the state-controlled, Chinese Central Television) attacking Falun Gong day and night. After that, he was sent back to work at his hospital for several months but was kept under strict surveillance. Though he is a physician, he was given a job as a hospital security guard. From left to right Haiyan He, Yanyun Huang, Anhua He, Haiou He At the same time, he was forced to make a choice between giving up the practice of Falun Gong and regaining his position as a physician. After a couple of months, having not renounced his belief, he was fired by the hospital. In May 2002, he was sentenced to 10 years in jail for refusing to give up his belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance, which are the core principles of Falun Gong. He is currently detained in Chongqing Prison, (Nan’an District, P.O Box 2306-7, Chongqing, 400061, P.R. China) His family is not allowed to know the phone number of the prison, and could only visit him once a month. • Ms. Yanyun Huang (mother), 58, retired kindergarten teacher, had been detained for several months when she was finally sent to Tuohuang Drug Rehabilitation Center in Xichang, Sichuan, in October 1999 for more than one and a half years. She was forced to perform hard labor during the day and sleep shoulder to shoulder in a very small room with over twenty drug addicts at night. She was finally bailed out by school colleagues in June, 2001, two months after her sentence was due to end, and has been under very restricted surveillance by local police 24 hours a day since then. When she applied for a passport at the end of 2001 to visit her son Dr. Haiying He in the United States, she was rejected for the reasons that she was a Falun Gong practitioner and might tell the public what had happened to her in the drug rehabilitation center. • Ms. Haiyan He (sister), 35, primary school teacher, was sentenced in January 2001 to Sichuan Zizhong NanMuSi Female Labor Camp for one and a half years. No one was able 2 U.S. Family Rescue Report to contact her for a year starting from June 2001 through June 2002, during which time she was put in solitary confinement in a windowless cell for several months. After being released from the labor camp, she has also been under very strict surveillance by local police 24 hours a day. • Mr. Anhua He (father), 63 year-old father, had to spend the past two years traveling back and forth by train between Xichang, Chongqing and Zizong, Sichuan to visit his wife and his daughter before they were released. Whenever Haiying calls his family, he has to worry about not making their situation more difficult, since all their phone calls are monitored by the police. Because of the persecution, both Haiying and his wife, Elizabeth, cannot go back to visit their families in China. Haiying says, “My heart was twisted and torn to pieces and went with each one of my loved ones when they were sent to labor camp and jail one after another.” Dr. Haiying He’s contact information is as the following: 1575 Tremont Street, Suite 608, Boston, MA 02120. Tel: 617.899.9815 Ms. Xuefei Zhou, female, 28, art designer -- wife of Zhaohui (Sam) Lu (Warehouse manager and resident of Georgia). Ms. Zhou was arrested in November 2000 for passing out pamphlets explaining the practice of Falun Gong in the street of her neighborhood. During the period from November 2000 to January 2001, she was detained in the Futian District Detention Center in Shenzhen, Guangdong. In January 2001, Ms. Zhou was sentenced without trial to three years of jail term at Women’s Labor Camp of Guangdong Province in Sanshui City. She has been held prisoner there since then. According to Li Guihua (an eye witness who could be reached at 314-739-0343), Xuefei was severely tortured and forced to labor. She was made to work long hours of needlework. Her eyes became red and swollen after work for long hours without pay; she was under 24-hour surveillance by another cellmate day and night; she was followed, monitored closely even when she went to sleep, take a shower or use bathroom. As a result of her refusing to be “reformed”, she was once completely stripped off and made sitting on the cement floor. She was forced to watch anti-Falun Gong TV programs and newspapers. She was also prohibited from talking to anybody. Her eyesight has deteriorated so much that it is almost completely lost under such inhuman environment. Her family’s medical parole requests have been repeatedly denied by the Chinese government authority. The last time Sam Lu heard his wife’s voice was in the summer of 2001 when his mother-in-law took a mobile phone with her when she visited her daughter. His mother-in-law called him long distance and quickly passed the phone to her daughter so that the two could hear each other’s voice. In just a few seconds the police came to intervene and confiscated the mobile phone. The contact information for Zhaohui (Sam) Lu is as following: 404-629-6262 (work), 770-951-5557 (home), 678-595-7229 (cell). Amy Lee had a happy family and a successful career before the suppression of Falun Gong. Because she would not renounce her belief in the practice, she had to endure harassment. She was followed by police, kidnapped, detained in prison and had her home phone tapped. She was stripped naked and beaten unconscious by the No. 13 Beijing Police Department. The police also encouraged criminal inmates to violently beat her. After suffering prolonged physical torture, she was finally sent to a mental hospital to receive force-feeding. Her husband was forced to divorce her. She lost her happy family, child, job and home. She came to America in 2001 and received refugee status from the U.S. Immigration Bureau. Despite U.S. approval of a visa for the girl to immigrate to the United States, Chinese officials have refused to give her daughter, Luo Meng Lin, a passport to travel to the United States because Lee practices Falun Gong. Lee has also called the police department several times but to no avail. On one occasion, Lee said, a police official told her that a passport would not be issued because Lee, through her advocacy of Falun Gong in China and the United States, had shown that she was anti-government. Lingwen Zeng, female, 67, renowned physicist at Jilin University - mother of Ms. Xueyuan Wu (Ph.D in Physics, a post-doctoral research associate at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a resident of New York). Professor Zeng started practicing Falun Gong in 1992. She had been detained twice in 1999, and since then, she suffered many other types of persecution. For examples, her home phone has been tapped, local police officers and neighborhood committee kept visiting her to threaten her and force her to give up her practice. Police officers often called her early in the morning and late in the night to check on her. During that period of time, Ms. Zeng used her own experiences to clarify the facts of Falun Gong to the police, the neighborhood committee and her university leaders, which allowed some kind-hearted policemen to understand the truth and they stopped harassing her. Unfortunately, on February 9, 2002, 3 days before the Chinese lunar New Year, local police arrested her again. This came after the PRC’s leader, Jiang Zemin, issued this new order to his henchmen: "Kill Falun Gong without pardon”. They held her in a brainwashing center – Tiebei Re-education Center in Changchun City, without notifying her family members. Two month later, her family received a notice that she had been sentenced to two years in the notorious Changchun Heizuizi Female Forced Labor Camp for not giving up her practice of Falun Gong. She is still in custody. The address and telephone number for the labor camp is: The fifth brigade, Changchun Heizuizi Female Forced Labor Camp, Changchun City, Jilin Province, (86)-4315384310. Zhang’s parents started practicing Falun Gong in 1995 and experienced dramatic improvements both physically and mentally. After July 20, 1999, they were subjected to criminal detention because of their practice. Upon release from the detention center, they were sent home under surveillance for a long period of time. In 2000, to avoid further persecution, they left their home. On January 1, 2001, they were detained in Beijing. They refused to reveal their names or address to oppose the wrongful detention. In April 2001, they were recognized by the Shandong police and were sent back to Jinan City and were forced to receive "re-education" in a brainwashing center. During that period of time, Ms. Liu went on hunger strike to protest her detainment and was then sent to a hospital. Later, both Mr. Zhang and Ms. Liu were sentenced to three years in forced labor camp, where they were made to do heavy labor for over ten hours a day. Their “crime” was "spreading Falun Gong." Mr. Zhang was imprisoned in the Liuchangshan Forced Labor Camp in Jinan City. Because he refused to renounce Falun Gong, he was put under strict surveillance for a long period of time. In April 2002, he was transferred to Wangcun Forced Labor Camp in Shandong Province to receive a 2-month intensive brainwashing. During these two months, his family members were not allowed to visit him. Ms. Liu is imprisoned in the Second Female Re-Education through Forced Labor Camp in Shangdong Province. Because she refused to give up her practice of Falun Gong, her term has been extended twice in one year. Meirong and Fucheng have been married since September 1972, they have a son and a daughter. Meirong used to suffer from high blood pressure and sleep disorder. In the summer of 1997, she started practicing Falun Gong. In less than 3 months, her blood pressure was lowered, she could sleep better, and her symptoms of heart disease also disappeared. Dr. Zhang had been arrested 4 times since July 1999. On October 26, 1999, she traveled over 1,200 miles to Beijing to give personal testimony as a medical doctor of the health benefits she had experienced with her Falun Gong practice to urge the leadership to end the ban on the practice. She was promptly arrested and police confiscated all the money she had and sent her back to her hometown of Pi County, Sichuan, where she served two weeks in the local detention center before she was bailed out. Police also fined her ¥12,000 (Chinese Yuan) (equivalent to an 5 U.S. Family Rescue Report annual salary for an average worker) and took that money directly from her pension. Ever since then, their family could no longer live in peace. There were all kinds of disturbances and interference in their daily life. Their telephone line and mail were interrupted, Meirong’s passport was confiscated illegally and police and government officials took turns to brainwash her. They had to leave home and go into hiding. In May 2001, Dr. Zhang and 3 other practitioners traveled to DuJiangYian. Her companion posted a Falun Gong flyer to reveal the facts of the persecution and was arrested. Because Dr. Zhang was with her friend, she was also arrested. She was detained for one month before she was sentenced to a labor camp for one year. She was detained in the Sichuan Province Woman Labor Education Institute. Due to the severe torture for 5 months, Dr. Zhang’s health deteriorated, her heart disease and high blood pressure came back. In late September 2001, she was released on bail. On February 2nd, 2002, while cooking dinner for the family, she was forcibly taken away from her home by police. The police did not show any arrest warrant and they ransacked her home on the next day after the arrest. She is currently detained in the Pi County Detention Center in Sichuan Province, an infamous hub known for its brutal torture tactics. Mr. Fucheng Fu could be reached at 408-258-6311. Ms. Benlan Yu, 60, retired X-ray technician from the Hospital of China Institute of Atomic Energy – mother of Miss Feng Yuan and Mr. Ke Yuan (residents of New York). Mrs. Yu has experienced tremendous improvements in both physical and mental health since she started practicing Falun Gong in 1997. Ms. Yu has been imprisoned several times for speaking out for Falun Gong. In mid-July 2000, she was arrested because she wrote to the Beijing municipal government to appeal for Falun Gong. She was sent to Beijing Changping Re-education Labor Camp, where she suffered from both mental and physical torture for eight months. Around Sept. 15, 2002, Ms. Yu was arrested again, along with five other Falun Gong practitioners who are her former colleagues from the institute. This happened a few days prior to the mid-autumn festival, a traditional Chinese celebration in which families celebrate family reunion together. During her arrest, the police officers did not present any arrest warrant. Thus, Ms. Yu refused to go with them and the standoff lasted a few hours. Then, the police officers forcibly abducted Ms. Yu and ransacked her home. They confiscated many of her Falun Gong books and other Falun Gong materials. This time, Ms. Yu was imprisoned in the Fangshan Public Security Bureau Detention Center, Beijing. Her family members were not allowed to visit her during the mid-autumn festival. Ms. Yu was later sentenced to two and a half years simply because Falun Gong books and materials were found in her house. Practitioners of Falun Dafa have to obtain permission to take a shower, and are only allowed to do so once every half a month or longer. They are only allowed five minutes for each shower. Zhiqiang Hu is a former officer in Dandong’s Air Force. After the April 25th peaceful protest of Falun Gong in Beijing, the PLA began banning military personnel from practicing Falun Gong. Since Zhiqiang firmly rejected the notion of giving up his Falun Gong practice, the Air Force escorted him back to his home province where he received a “general discharge” to take on civilian jobs in 2000. As the persecution intensified, Zhiqiang went back to Beijing to appeal for the basic human rights of Falun Gong practitioners in October 2000. He was detained in a Dandong, Liao-Ning province labor camp to serve a three-year term. In 1997, he started working at Beijing Air Force Research Laboratory and was quickly promoted to director. After the persecution started, Zhiming expressed his uncompromising attitude to practice Falun Gong. He emphasized to the senior officials that Falun Gong would never get involved with politics. Falun Gong’s requirement of cultivating one’s virtue did not conflict with the law of the nation. Since he was the technical master in his military unit, the unit leaders decided to shield him from the onslaught of persecution. Nevertheless, they continued their effort pursuing him to give up practicing Falun Gong. In the beginning of March 2000, all military units have put Falun Gong practitioners under house arrest. In order to avoid being detained, Zhiming left his work for a few days out of town. However, after searching his telephone record, he was arrested by the security people at another practitioner’s home in the city of ChangPing, in the north suburb of Beijing. Then, he was detained at the XiShan Air Force Base in Beijing. He was under 24 hour’s close watch. According to the regulations in the military, research personnel with a master’s degree could not be discharged from the army. However, because of his firm belief in Falun Gong, he was discharged and escorted back to his home province in mid 2000 after being detained and brainwashed. Zhiming was a member of Chinese Communist Party. In June 2000, he was expelled from the party. Ever since then, Zhiming has been constantly harassed and strictly monitored by local authorities, and was forced to leave home and has become destitute. In September 2000, he was arrested in Shanghai with other Falun Gong practitioners. The policemen did not show any arrest warrant, and did not inform his family until several months later. After being detained in Shanghai for several months, he was “sentenced” to a four-year jail term without a formal trial or any legal procedure. Zhiming is currently detained in Shanghai Detention Center.
