The walls are painted; the kitchen is installed; the olive oil has arrived; and the stuffed wild
boar’s head is already hung. Terroni on Adelaide is officially under construction.

If you’ve never eaten our traditional southern Italian food, you might be curious to know that Terroni
first opened its door on Queen Street West in 1992. Although owner Cosimo Mammoliti was only 26,
he already had 10 years of restaurant experience—from manning the coat check to serving tables—
behind him. He chose the name Terroni, meaning from the earth, as both an homage to his southern
Italian heritage, and as a brazen wink to the industrial Italian north who often used the derogatory
term when referring to their southern neighbours. The four bar stools, panini stuffed with prosciutto
crudo, and good café was enough to keep neighbourhood regulars coming back. In 1993, Cosimo bought
a second-hand pizza oven and personally started spinning thin crust, always uncut, traditionally
topped pizza. With this addition, Terroni on Queen officially arrived and the hustle and bustle was
contagious. In 1995, Cosimo opened a second Terroni out-post in the heart of the financial district on
Victoria Street. A third installment opened at One Balmoral Ave, near Yonge and St. Clair in 2001.

Terroni at 57 Adelaide is the next step—well, exactly 375 steps from the Victoria Street location. The
restaurant is housed in the former York County Court House—a heritage site originally constructed in
1851-52. While historic details are intact, expect some modifications, like the basement jail cells posing
as cellars for Italian wine exclusive to us, and a DJ booth installed in the grand staircase. Expect Terroni
staples, including traditional thin crust pizze, fresh pasta made on-site daily, and imported Italian goods.
And look forward to innovations, such as the enoteca (wine bar) located in the entrance, and several private
event rooms that will accommodate intimate business lunches or parties of 300+. Doors will open in October
2007. We look forward to seeing our regulars sitting at the counter and to welcoming new Terroni patrons.
