AeroStats The Monthly Newsletter of the Willamette Aerostat Society July 2009 Volume 11, Number 7 iSOAR piloted by Mark Trujillo Photo courtesy of Bill Dewhurst From Our President Is the year really half over? The weather is finally beginning to look good, however with the nice weather also brings the prime growing season for crops here in the northwest. As many of you know, those crops are the way these farmers make a living. Please make sure that you and your crew respect them and the crop that they are growing. It only takes one angry landowner to start telling their neighbors and friends about their dealings with a pilot or crew and our landing sites will shrink even shorter than they are now. I recently received a bunch of landowner cards and I would like to put these to good use. They will be mailed back to me and at the Christmas party, we will draw the winner. Both the pilot and the landowner will receive a gift. If you are interested in getting some of these cards, let me know and I can mail you out 10-15 to start and if you need more, please let me know. I feel that using these can improve our relations. There is a spot in there that states if they had a negative experience with the pilot and crew, they can describe that. If I receive a negative comment, I will personally contact them as well with our community relations team and we will try to resolve the issue. I am hoping that an open line of communication will diffuse any problems that may arise in the future. On that same note, if you feel that there is going to be a problem, please feel free to contact me. I can then contact the community relations team and we can try to resolve any issues before they become problems. An ounce of prevention now can save a lot of problems in the future. The June meeting we had Kevin Knapp give an interesting perspective into weather and particularly into the sites that he uses. All of the sites given are available to everyone and they are free to use them . He gave examples on how he used them and how they pertain to each area. He also gave a presentation on the figure 8 knot that he uses for his tie off system. It was very informative on how he can use the figure 8 and remain in total control without having the crew have weight on and then shoot up at a high rate of ascent but to let out slowly on the knot and ascend very well. I have talked to Kevin and he is planning on putting a video on youtube in the future in case you missed it. The July meeting will be during the Jefferson Mint Festival July 25th. WAS will be providing drinks and possibly some food for the tailgate. We will get together as one large group and conduct the meeting. Watch for more details both on the blog and through email. The 25th anniversary of the Tigard Festival of Balloons was held during Father’s day weekend. Jim Smith and his team did a wonderful job again this year putting this together. Flights were held Saturday and Sunday and all balloons launched each day. A huge thank you goes to Justin and Pasha Luber and Mark Trujillo for providing tether rides for the event. This gave many of the people there the chance to experience flight. Excellent job also has to go to Marilyn Barnhart and Judy Ell for all of their hard work getting crew for everyone. I also want to brag on Laura Hancock and her crew- Both days they tethered after landing until their tanks were almost dry. For their efforts, Laura was given the sportsmanship award and in true fashion, she dedicated the award to her crew. A huge thank you for making the event a success again this year. Many WAS members stepped up in various ways for the event. THANK YOU!!! As many of you know that Western Region Director Gary Eaton has resigned due to health issues. This is the same position that I ran for last year and only lost by a few votes. When Gary resigned, the BFA board called me and asked if I was still interested. I said I was so my name with a couple others were on the list for the Board to decide. June 22nd the board met, and I have been appointed to be the Western Region Director to finish out Gary’s term. I am excited for this new position. If you are part of the BFA, please let me know what you like and dislike about the BFA. Tell me what you would like to see from the BFA. If you are not part of the BFA, please send me an email and let me know why you are not part of it. What caused you to either not join or not renew? I am looking for input from you. With the new appointment, I will finish out this year as WAS president, but will not continue in this capacity for the club. So even though it is a little earlier this year to begin thinking about elections, please take a few minutes and consider either running or nominating someone to run for President of the club. Also, after 4 years Sandy Grove has decided it is time to let someone else be the position of Secretary/ Treasurer. If you are interested in running for either position, please send myself or one of the executive committee an email. Please plan on attending the next meeting in July during the Jefferson Mint Festival. Until next time please fly safe, play safe and most of all be safe. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m. PERSONAL NOTE FROM SANDY: After four years as Secretary/Treasurer, I’m retiring my steno pad & clip board at the end of 2009. Page 3 Willamette Aerostat Society BFA Western Region Director (posted on the WAS Balloon Blog by Jim Smith) You may know that our own Cory Miller lost being elected last fall to the BFA board by just 3 votes to Gary Eaton. Gary was forced for medical reasons to recently resign the position of Western Region Director. When this happens the BFA Board appoints someone to complete the term. At Thursday's WAS's BBQ/Meeting it was announced that Cory was being considered for the Position. Paul Cheatham, a visiting Pilot from California, also announced that he was being considered. At this point I was beginning to look forward to some serious arm wrestling or some other form of entertainment to settle this situation. Paul settled it by saying he was declining and throwing his support to Cory. Later, Cory received a call from the BFA Board announcing his appointment to the position of BFA Western Director to complete Gary Eaton's term. WAY TO GO CORY ! Congratulations and I hope you're looking forward to some exciting times ahead. I believe this shatters the glass ceiling that dictated that only 'Pilots' were qualified to sit on the board. Allstate Festival of Balloons (posted on the WAS Balloon Blog by Jim Smith) Thursday nights "BBQ" was a bit different this year as one of the Festival's Sponsors, California Kitchen, catered the dinner. Everyone enjoyed a variety of Pizza's, breads and salads. Many thanks to Cory for organizing the evening and to WAS members for your help and participation. Festival flights occurred on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We got 'weathered out' on Friday. The weekend flights gave our communities a great show with the balloons scattering over a wide area. The 'record' for long distance was a toss up between Bill Woodhead flying WWJD to Canby on Saturday, and Michael Blum flying Betty Bovine to Gladstone on Sunday with a splash and dash in Lake Oswego along the way. Both Friday and Saturday's night glows came off great. With less than perfect conditions we stood up the Corporate Balloons on Friday and scattered other baskets around the field. On Saturday everyone who participated stood up their balloons a little before dark and had a wonderful time entertaining the crowd. Darren Kling (ReMax), Kevin Knapp (Mayflower) and Michael Blum (Beemster Cheese) lined their balloons across the field and did an all-in-one stand up. Once they were up the remainder of the field stood up their balloons. Our own Laura Hancock received the Brick Morgan Memorial Sportsmanship Award for delighting neighborhood kids with tethered rides after landing in their neighborhood on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday she entertained the kids for over an hour and half until her fuel tanks ran dry. Way to show the "Ballooning Spirit" Laura. Many thanks to all our members who participated in one form or another. See y'all next year. Date is July 25th. There are no sponsors -- i.e., no money for pilots. However, rides will be offered to the public at $180/person. Marianne will be putting up handbills around town (Jefferson) to advertise the event. Pilots and crew are welcome to camp out at the LeDouxs -- just let them know. There will be a parade after the flyout for those that want to will join. So plan on some decorations. Theme is "150 Years of Hoppiness. " Website is www.mintfestival.com. He was 13 at the time. It led him to intern for hot-air balloon manufacturer Cameron Balloons in England while he was in college. In 1994, Baird returned to U.S.-based Cameron Balloons in Dexter. The balloon pilot, 45, bought the business a few years later. Today, the company makes about 50 custom-made hot-air balloon aircraft a year. The small factory produces balloons from nearly start to finish - from hand-weaving the baskets to sewing together the colorful panels that create balloon envelopes that stand 70 feet tall when inflated. The company made some balloons for the Super Bowl last year and a balloon in the shape of a hamburger for Burger King. "There's a huge satisfaction in seeing them fly,'' Baird said. "Whether it's the NFL balloons flying over the Super Bowl, a special shape Mickey Mouse or a new pilot taking his fist solo, it's a great feeling.'' Baird and his wife, Anne, have two children: Alan, 10, and Emily, 8. His business: Hot-air balloon manufacturing. Interesting fact most people don't know: "Probably that we're here at all.
