FROM THE PASTOR: Welcoming a New Pastor
Shepherd of the Mountains has voted to call Pastor Al Schoonover as your next pastor and Pastor Schoonover has accepted. Plans are underway to welcome Pastor Al and Dee into your church. A new chapter in your congregation's history is starting. So here are some words of wisdom from a couple of former pastors of our synod. One thing is for certain whenever you call a new pastor - life will be different! Not because your new pastor wants to change things or because others in the church want change. It is just a fact-of-life that things will be different. Your new pastor comes from a different background and a different set of experiences. You are also a different congregation today then you were when you called Pastor Beake. You have different concerns for the parish today then you did back then. You have also established certain comfort zones over the past number of years in the way your church does ministry..…so having someone new leading you is going to feel different. Your community also has different spiritual needs today than in previous generations..... so your mission will continue to emerge and develop. More than anything else right now there may a great feeling of joy and excitement in the parish. This is good and healthy. Over the next few months you may feel like there is more energy in church. There may be new ideas and things you would like to try. But there is something more important to do during the first months of your life together with Pastor Al than talk new programs. It is focusing on building a great relationship with each other. The other stuff can come later. It is vital during the first year with any new pastor to have patience, love, warmth, caring and understanding. It is a time when your new pastor will be very busy getting to know as many of you as possible and finding out how best to ‘do’ ministry in relationship with you. Remember relationships need time to grow and flourish. You are building a long-term relationship with Pastor Al and Dee. First impressions should not be a rush to judgment. It took you time to build a relationship with Pastor Beake. He was also ‘new’ once upon a time. So give both yourselves and Pastor Al time to build this new relationship. The office of pastor is a holy calling done by human beings with differing gifts, abilities, talents and concerns. If something surprises you during the first few months remember that it is just a time in your life when expectations will run into reality. Do not worry about it. God can teach us new ways and challenge our expectations. Some of your expectations may need to be updated. In the past decade, you have had limited experience with pastors. You have seen only a couple of ways of doing ministry. The 1970's or, for that matter, the 1990's way of doing ministry is not the way of today. So expect Pastor Al to do things differently than any of your past pastors. Do not "talk shop" about church problems during the first few months. Your new pastor cannot fix the problems right away. They have been around a while and it will take time for both you and the pastor to work together in unity to solve them. That will happen in due time, but the time is not now. This is a time to establish caring, trusting, respectful and warm ways of being the church. Done well, these next few months can be the start of a beautiful relationship. Joy is at the heart of the Gospel and we need it right now. So ..... there is going to be a new face in the pulpit this month! Let us celebrate! In closing I give God thanks for the people of Shepherd of the Mountains, Pastor Al and Dee.

In Christ’s service, Pastor Barbara (Special thanks to Pastor Mark Peterson and other pastors of EWA-ID synod for the bulk of this article)

New Book Study

Introducing the life you’d gladly stand in line for....
You don’t stand in line a Starbucks just to buy a cup of coffee. You stop for the experience surrounding the cup of coffee.
Too many of us line up for God out of duty or guilt. We completely miss the warmth and richness of the experience of living with God. If we’d learn to see what God is doing on earth, we could participate fully in the irresistible life that He offers.
Let Leonard Sweet show you how the passion that Starbucks has for creating an irresistible experience can connect you with God’s stirring introduction to the experience of faith. We will be meeting in January from 12noon-2pm on Saturdays, January 9th and 16th. The place to be determined based upon how many people we will have. Please contact Pastor Barbara for a copy of the book and to let her know you will be coming.

On December 9 the church council directed the management board to arrange for the leasing out of the parsonage. Mountain Property Management will probably handle the advertising, screening, showing, and credit checks to find a trustworthy tenant. However if any church members know of parties interested in leasing the parsonage, please let us know. We will be asking monthly rental of about $1600.00. The parsonage will probably be available about February 1, 2010. We need help to administer the lease after we have a tenant. Weiss De Vos has volunteered to help when his job permits, but needs assistance when he is not available. If someone would volunteer to partner up with Weiss to administer the lease it would save the church about $2000.00 per year. Contact Nyles Ellefson (690-9011) or Dan Schou (690-8498)
