GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING DOCTORAL PRESENTATIONS / DOCTORATE
Theses The object of collecting theses for a dissertation or documentation of a technological design is to allow the doctoral candidate to demonstrate that he / she possesses broad scientific knowledge and is not limited to the specialized subject of his / her dissertation or technological design. The candidate may handle this in a number of ways, based on the following subjects: - offshoots and perspectives in a dissertation or arising form a technological design - side issues / alternative results that are not part of the dissertation or technological design as such - comments on scientific literature consulted (mistakes found, suggested short circuits) - comments on related disciplines, e.g. concerning methods used - statements on expected developments that are not yet fully demonstrable And finally, candidates are permitted to make pronouncements on very diverse subjects. It is deemed advisable for candidates to look for a surprising, sometimes paradoxical, even provocative content for this kind of pronouncement. These theses are really a serious kind of joke. To make sure candidates do not overly limit themselves to the subject of their dissertation or technological design, we have made it obligatory to include at least 6 theses not related to the topic of the dissertation or technological design. Four of these theses must be of a technical intrinsic nature and two of a general social nature. If possible, the theses should be supported by references or an acknowledgement of sources. Before submitting theses to the Rector Magnificus (through the Office of Doctoral Presentations and Academic Ceremonies, here after known as Bureau PenP), at least 6 weeks before the doctoral defense, the first page should include the 1st supervisor’s signature and the indication which theses (not related to the dissertation) are: - of Technical-Intrinsic nature; at least 4 - of General Social nature; at least 2 Bureau PenP will contact the doctoral candidate when the Rector Magnificus has approved the theses so that the doctoral candidate can start printing the theses. Setting a date The preferred defense date can be given by the doctoral candidate during or after handing in the form 1. Following steps are: to inform at Bureau PenP for the available dates (per 2 or 4 weeks, due to the validity of the dates), to discuss the available dates (via the 1st supervisor) with all committee members and with the dean (will be chairman), to inform Bureau PenP about the preferred date of defense. When the data is still available Bureau PenP will make a reservation for the doctoral candidate. The setting of a date for doctoral presentation is liable to some restrictions: - Inauguration speeches and final lectures on Friday take precedence over doctoral presentations - Per department only one doctoral presentation can take place per day - A doctoral defense can not take place at the same time as a diploma award of the same department - For the department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry: there are no defenses on the second Tuesday of the month. The booking of a date has only limited validity. When Bureau PenP has received the approval of dissertation / technological design (through form 2) a definite date can be fixed. Introduction to the chairman About four weeks before the doctoral presentation date, the candidate should make an appointment with the chairman of his / her Doctorate Committee. As a general rule, the dean of the concerned department will be the chairman. In case the dean is unable, the dean will discuss with the 1 st supervisor who will be the alternate chairman. If it is not yet known who will be the chairman, please contact Bureau PenP, tel. 040-247 5505.
