ASSID Disability Support Worker Conference ‘Working Well: In Paper AND In Practice’ University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia November 27-28, 2008 ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND INFORMATION CALL FOR PAPERS CLOSES FRIDAY AUGUST 1, 2008!!!! The ASSID Disability Support Worker Conference provides a forum where support workers from a wide variety of cultural background and experience come together to listen to, participate in and discuss presentations and workshops about the latest information, current research, innovations and issues of interest within the disability sector. Conference Program Papers, Facilitated Discussion Groups and Workshops are invited from Disability Support Workers, Researchers, Academics, people with a disability and those interested in, or involved with the professional development of Disability Support Workers. The program this year will explore ideas and experiences from the grass roots level where personal stories are shared and discussed. The program committee strongly encourages Disability Support Workers, people with a disability and family members to present at the conference. Conference Theme: This year marks the 8th Annual Disability Support Worker conference and the theme ''Working Well: On Paper AND In Practice" explores the idea of rhetoric versus practice. Just because it looks good on paper doesn't mean we are doing the right thing by the people we support. Are we really doing what we set out to do? How do DSW's support people with a disability to lead the lives they want in a world of administration and compliance and still meet the important legislative, organisational and departmental responsibilities? The program aims to include leading lights in the disability field to discuss how they work towards making a difference every day, yet still keep up to date with the 'paper based' side of support. How do they balance the juggling act? The conference will explore areas such as: Person Centred Planning - how do we have great outcomes for people, not just great looking documents? Active Support - how can you do this well without creating more paperwork? Strengthening the role of the supervisor/team leader - how to balance what's important (paperwork) and what is really important (supporting people to lead the live they want to lead)? Evidence in practice - exploring the use of evidence when supporting people with a disability; and Whose job is it to 'run' or 'manage' a house/day service? Is the team leader, the staff, the resident group, the organisation? Call for Papers Timeline Call for papers will be accepted until Friday 1st August 2008. All submissions are encouraged and will be reviewed by the conference advisory committee. It is at the discretion of the organising committee if a paper will be accepted for presentation. Successful contributors will be notified after the final selection process with confirmation of dates, times and rooms.
