The Basics
The 2008 date for Presentations is Saturday, April 5, 2008 from 9AM – 1PM at the Wake County Cooperative Extension Office, which is located at 4001-E Carya Dr. Raleigh, NC 27610. Any Wake County 4-H youth ages 5 – 19 may participate. Age is determined as of January 1, 2008. A youth who is not currently enrolled in Wake County 4-H may participate by contacting the Wake County 4-H office at (919) 250-1103 and completing a 4-H Enrollment Form and Medical Form. There is no charge to join Wake County 4-H and youth are not required to be affiliated with a 4-H club in order to participate. Registration forms are due back to the Wake County Extension office by:
March 14, 2008 if doing a videotaped presentation March 20, 2008 if doing a regular presentation
There is no fee to register for 4-H Presentations. Age Categories
Cloverbud (5-8 years old) 9 – 10 year olds 11 – 13 year olds 14 – 18 year olds
Presentations are a great way for youth to learn more about something they studied briefly in school!
Age eligibility is determined by the age of the youth on January 1st of the current year. To be eligible to participate at the district and state levels in 2008, the youth must have reached their 9th birthday by January 1st, 2008, but must not have reached their 19th birthday by January 1st, 2008. Wake County has a Cloverbud division that allows 5-8 year olds to do a presentation and receive feedback, but Cloverbuds are not placed or judged. There is no Cloverbud division at District and State competition levels. Teams of no more than two can do a collaborative presentation in any category except 4-H Entertains. There is no limit to the number of 4-Hers who can collaborate on a 4-H Entertains presentation. If the ages of team members span age categories, the team must compete in the category for the oldest team member.
Presentation Content
4-Hers over age 14 are asked to complete a CONTENT based presentation and should not include preparation unless they are in a “demonstration” category. Demonstration categories are: Artistic Arrangement, Horticulture Production and Marketing, Landscaping, Fruit and Vegetables, Egg Cookery, and Peanut Foods. Youth younger than 14 may offer to have the judges taste the food prepared for their presentation.
Presentation Categories The following are categories in 4-H Presentations this year. The sample topics and descriptions are meant to give you an idea of SOME of the types of subjects that might fit in each category. Presentations are not limited to the suggested subject matters in the right hand column below. Please call the 4-H office with any questions!

4-H Entertains
This category will present after completion of all other categories so that youth who have done a presentation in a subject matter area and wish to compete in 4-H Entertains will have the opportunity to participate in both. With the exception of 4-H Entertains, youth may only enter one presentation each year. Youth participating in 4-H Entertains are expected to let the Extension Office know of any specific equipment needed (e.g. a piano) at the time of registration. Every effort will be made to provide the requested equipment, but staff will contact the presenter ahead of time if the office will be unable to provide the requested equipment. There is no limit to the number of 4-Hers who can collaborate on a 4-H Entertains presentation.
4-H Entertains is for amateur performers only. 4-H members or groups who perform for pay are not eligible. Public Speaking There are no props allowed in the Public Speaking category. Emphasis in this category is solely on the ability of the speaker to communicate the message effectively. . Presentation Steps and Stages
Pick a topic of interest Narrow down the focus to a specific issue or item of interest Decide on a purpose (seeking to entertain, persuade, or inform?) Develop a introduction, content and summary Research to make sure your information is accurate and up-to-date. Practice, practice, practice and time when practicing (people normally speak much faster when they’re actually presenting rather than practicing!) Sleep, rest, and relax night before presentations Dress for success Play nicely! Be a good sport on the day of competition! (This goes for parents, too!)
Practice Presentations
This year, several Wake County staff members have volunteered to provide feedback to 4-Hers who wish to practice their presentations prior to the big day. Youth may choose to practice their presentation in front of the staff person of their choice. Please check the appropriate box on the Presentation Entry Form if you wish to sign up to practice your presentation.
Notes to Remember
Youth are allowed to use PowerPoint, signs or posters, and props in any presentation category except Public Speaking. No live animals may be used in any presentation. No real or fake weapons are allowed in any presentation.

When using visuals, please make sure they are neat and relevant. If using Power Point, try not to type everything you’re going to say on each slide. Visuals are back up for your content, not the content itself!
Audio-Visuals
Youth are allowed to use PowerPoint, signs or posters, and props in any presentation category except Public Speaking. The county will make efforts to have projectors available for use by youth (as long as equipment needs are stated on entry form), but youth will need to provide their own laptop if they are using PowerPoint. Please note that youth will need to bring all CDs, jump drives, cords, etc. to connect their computer to the LCD projector in the presentation room. If there are questions in regards to equipment, please contact the 4-H office at least one week prior to the date of presentations.
Presentation Length
General presentation length is 5 – 12 minutes with the following exceptions: Chicken & Turkey BBQ Pork Cookery Beef Char Grill Horse Horse Horse Public Speaking Horse Public Speaking Horse Team Horse Team Public Speaking 2.0 hours 2.0 hours 2.0 hours 4 – 12 minutes 9 – 12 minutes 4 – 10 minutes 8 – 10 minutes 5 – 10 minutes 10 – 15 minutes 5 – 7 minutes

Be sure to practice for the event! People normally talk faster when they’re nervous or in front of a crowd!
Judges will deduct one point (mandatory) for each minute over or under the required time in any presentation.
Horse Presentations
Please note the time periods described above. One point is deducted for each minute under or over the allotted times.
Day-Of Information
Youth doing presentations should check in at the Registration Desk (front lobby of the Ag Building) no later than 8:30AM. After checking in, youth may go to the door of the room where they will present (map provided at check-in), and sign up for a specific slot for presentations. Once competition begins at 9AM, all participants are expected to be on-site and ready to go in the order in which they are signed up on the door. You may not sign up for a specific time for presentations, as times are difficult to determine in advance of presentations. Instead, participants may select the order in which they will present. No one is allowed to go in or out of a room during presentations, as this is distracting. Parents, please bring quiet toys to entertain young children.

Only authorized staff and specific volunteers are allowed in the Control Room, as this is a hub of activity and concentration is required for score tallying, checking, data entry, and awards packeting. Once presentations are in session, please remain quiet in the hallways and lobby as noise echoes down the hallways and can disturb presenters! Youth competing in presentations are competing against their room’s competition (in given age brackets), not against a standardized norm.
Judging
Presentations are judged by volunteer judges or paid staff. All judges receive training in how to score and provide feedback for presentations. The decision of the judge or judges is final and may only be changed with the permission authorized 4-H staff in charge of the event.
Video Presentations
Wake County 4-H recognizes that the true benefits of doing a presentation are the lifeskills that come from designing, gathering information, and organizing communication in an effective way. We also recognize that there may be instances when a youth wishes to do a presentation, but is unable to attend the actual event because of prior obligations or unavoidable circumstances. We do not want these youth to miss out on the lifeskills gained by preparing a presentation. For this reason, we are offering youth who are unable to attend on April 5th the opportunity to prepare a video presentation. Youth will need to request a videotaped presentation on your entry form so that we can contact the family to schedule a time to tape the presentation. A Wake County 4-H staff member will tape the presentation and may also ask questions at the conclusion of the youth’s presentation while the tape is still running so as to provide a similar environment to the traditional County Activity Day. In fairness to all youth, once the tape starts running, it will not stop until the youth completes his or her presentation (no “do-overs”). IMPORTANT: Any youth wishing to do a videotaped presentation this year MUST turn in the enclosed registration form no later than March 14, 2008 at 5PM. This earlier deadline allows 4-H staff to contact families and schedule presentations in time to have videos ready to show to the judges on April 5th. Judges for each category will judge both in-person and videotaped presentations so that competition is as equitable as possible.
Awards
Cloverbuds do not compete, but do receive a participation award and certificate. All entrants in all age divisions will receive a Certificate of Participation and ribbon. First, second, and third place awards will be named in each category for all age divisions except Cloverbud Vouchers are distributed with 1st , 2nd, and 3rd place awards.. They may be used towards tuition or fees required to various 4-H activities, such as camps and retreats, or they may be used to purchase items from the 4-H catalog, including curriculum. If a youth wishes to use their voucher to purchase an item or items from the catalog, s/he should contact the Wake County 4-H office to redeem the voucher and order the item(s). The following amounts are attached to vouchers:
