Presentation of Windows XP Georgian LIP Tbilisi Marriot hosted the presentation of a joint project between Microsoft Corporation and UGT, the leader IT company in Georgia, to celebrate the launch of Windows XP Georgian LIP. The Georgian Interface Pack is free and is available for download from both the UGT website, as well as the Microsoft website. “We are excited about the opportunity we had to work with the government of Georgia and local partners in order to offer a native language user interface. Georgian version of Windows XP will make the computing experience easier, safer, more entertaining and better connected. This is our first and successful step. Our next step is the development of local LIP for the newly released Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007”-said Jon White, business development manager for CEE Emerging Markets at Microsoft. We would also like to mention that anyone using a licensed version of Windows XP can also download the Georgian LIP or substitute an English interface with the Georgian one. “The availability of Windows XP in Georgian will accelerate IT literacy and help bridge the digital divide in our country. Having a Georgian interface will create new opportunities for the development of our IT infrastructure and will empower many more of our people, allowing them to become comfortable, and productive, with technology”-said George Arveladze, the Minister of Economic Development of Georgia. Based on the agreement signed between UGT and Microsoft on May 1st, 2005, UGT started the process of localization of Microsoft Windows XP. 2220 terms and 80 000 phrases (including 355 000 terms) were translated within the project. With the help of a special web-site, all interested people could participate in the translation process. “We are very pleased with this great partnership with Microsoft on the development of the Georgian LIP. With the aid of the Microsoft LIP, the personal computer will become more accessible to a sector of the Georgian population which was previously overlooked, enabling them to effortlessly use the Georgian language on personal computer systems. Computer literacy is becoming a must and there is no better way to achieve it than to communicate anything related to computers in one’s native language’-George Chirakadze, President of UGT.
The holding company ‘Georgian Industrial Group’ (GIG) has provided the popularization of Georgian Windows. The newspaper ‘Kviris Palitra’ assured the population was well informed about the project and those interested had the chance to work on the translation. The computer store PCSHOP.GE supported the project and provided popularization of Georgian Windows. Free participation in the testing process was supported by the Training and Certification Centre – IT Knowledge.
