The Navigation Problem

                                                    The Web, being a scale-free network,
                                                    causes the so-called Navigation Problem
                                                    The Navigation Problem is “the
                                                    problem of disorientation during the
                                                    process of link following”

The ExpertFinder initiative deals with
information about people, projects,
events, publications, etc.
Even those information networks suffer
from the Navigation problem (e.g., in the
figure a FOAF network)

 Navigation and Presentation semantics

The STAR:dust conceptual model is our top-level reference model that
describes the Semantic Travel Across Resources (STAR) with the aim of
designing unified support tools (dust) to help travelers in their navigation
A Vehicle is a navigation means that gives the Web Traveler access to a
specific view on the HyperEnvironment. This view can be built by
composing together the TravelObjects, the atomic bunches of information.
The vehicle meets a particular need of the traveler, because it enables a
specific TravelType: in the physical space we move by bicycle, car, boat,
plane, etc. depending on the typology of travel we undertake.

The Travel model

The TravelModel is an ontological model (expressed in OWL) for
surfing through resources, that formalizes the main aspects of
users’ navigation, drawing inspiration from the metaphor of travel
This model is made up of three different parts, which represent
the features related to navigation, access and presentation

Our solution
The SOIP-F framework
SOIP-F (Semantic Organizational Information Portal
framework) is our reference running implementation built
upon the STAR:dust conceptual model
Several portals implemented with SOIP-F are available on-
line and accessible from http://seip.cefriel.it

Ci starebbe bene un’immagine, ma quale?

STAR:dust and SOIP-F for ExpertFinder
In the ExpertFinder scenario, SOIP-F can be used for:
The automatic generation of personal and institutional web pages,
because SOIP-F can provide the user interface and the navigational paths
to access this kind of data.
The implementation of a Semantic CORDIS portal, because SOIP-F can
be used to define different views on the information about projects,
institutions, and so on

                         Thank you for paying attention

                             Any question?
