A biography of Vajrapani - the source of the emanations -
and the names of various manifestations

In the holy land of Chang Lo Chen

Resides the great Lord of all Secret Tantras

He who destroys hosts of negative and obstructive forces

Salutation to Vajrapani, holder of the vajra

On that positive note and salutation, I will present a short biography of the

source of Lelung Jedrung emanations and the line of Lelung reincarnations.

The source of the reincarnations of Olkha Jedrung, also known as Lelung

Zhepai Dorje, is Vajrapani, the powerful Lord of Secrets and compiler and

protector of all the profound tantras, which are the ultimate vehicle of Buddha's

teachings.

During the Zinpa Chenpo Kalpaa in the far distant past, there was a

universal ruler named Tsibkyi Mukyud, who had a thousand sons, the eldest of

whom were Migmi Zum and Rabtu Tenpa, also called Thuchen Thob. His chief

minister, Brahmin Gyatso'i Dul, had eighty sons, the youngest being Gyatso'i

Nyingpo, whose enlightened name was Sangyas Rinpoche Nyingpo. The latter

prophesied that King Tsibkyi Mukhyud would be enlightened as Buddha

Amitabha in Sukhavatib, that subsequently his eldest son, Migmi Zum, and later

his second son, Rabtu Tenpa, would also become enlightened, and that Rabtu

Tenpa would become Vajrapani. Some sutras speak of a prophesy stating that

when he became enlightened in Sukhavati, its qualities and those of its

inhabitants would become three times greater.

According to the Sutra of Inconceivable Secretsc, during the far distant

Zespar Nangwa Kalpa, Buddha Yonten Thayas Rinchen Natsog Koepai Gyalpod

manifested in the World of Magnificent Adornment, where he was served for ten

million years by the universal ruler Yulkor Sung and his seven hundred thousand

queens and one thousand womb-born sons. Two of the queens, Mamed Ma and

Pemed Ma, miraculously gave birth on their laps to Prince Chos Sem and Prince

Choskyi Lodoe respectively. The ruler learned that all his sons had performed

enlightened actions and, wanting to find out who among them would first become

an enlightened being, put their names into a vase and performed a divination.

This indicated that first his son Nampar Dagpai Lodoe would become Buddha

Khorwa Jige, the first of the thousand Buddhas of this fortunate aeon, later

Nampar Gyalwai De would become Buddha Ser Thubf, then Wanpo Shiwa would

become Buddha ‘Od Srungg, subsequently Don Thamche Druppa would become

our teacher Buddha Shakyamuni, and finally the other sons would become the

remaining thousand Buddhas. When the thousand womb-born sons asked the

two miraculously born sons what they prayed for, Chos Sem said he prayed that

he would be their protector Vajrapani, that his actions would not overstep the

boundaries of the Buddhas’ secrets, and that he would hear, revere and

understand all of the outer and inner teachings.

Chos Sem did indeed become Vajrapani, and it was prophesied he would

become Buddha Dorje Nampar Nonpa in the World Completely Filled With

Resources during the Nampar Jongwa Kalpa. Thus it was stated there would be

a copy of glorious Vajrapani behind every one of the millions of emanations sent

forth by the thousand Bodhisattvas of the fortunate aeon, including Maitreya, and

furthermore that Vajrapani’s emanations would equal in number those of Buddha

Shakyamuni.

During the period of our Buddha’s teachings, while residing as lord of the

Yakshas on the topmost floor of Great Chang Lo Chen Palace to the north of

Mount Meru, Vajrapani manifested in sixteen forms before emanating as Laskyi

Dorje, the great Mahasiddha of Lodrakh, for the benefit of sentient beings. These

were as follows: King Drowa Zangpo, the elder son of the Indian king Shri

Ratnabodhi, an emanation of Arya Avalokiteshvara; the Nepali king Dharmapala;

a member of Naga Zhulang’s family beneath Kongpo Shula; a son of Bonpo Raja

in Yarlung; Prince Jangtsa Lhawon, a son of King Me Ag Tsom; a non-Buddhist

teacher in western India who led many non-Buddhists into Buddhism; a Kashmiri;

a divine son in the thirty-third celestial realm; yogi Choskyi Senge; a parrot; an

antelope; a householder; a directional guardian; Abbot Druppa of Ding Ma; the

great leader Senge of Shud Phu; and a cannibal in Ngayab Ling. He emanated

these various forms to benefit sentient beings in accordance with their mental

aptitudes and capacities.
