Adobe Captivate 6
Setting up quizzes
Captivate lets you create a wide variety of quizzes to include in your project. You may have many quiz options, including coordinating data in a Learning Management System or branching within the project and also improve assessments by randomising questions and shuffling answers. To insert a quiz into a Captivate presentation, go to INSERT…Slide…Question Slide.

You will be offered seven categories of question template:
Fig. 1 In this example, we will use Hot Spot and Graded Question. (Graded means there are right and wrong answers, Survey means there are no wrong answers).

In the dialogue box above, you begin to ‘design’ your question. You determine the number of hotspots (we’ve picked 4), whether to allow clicks on hotspots only etc.

By using the skills you should already have gained in Captivate (remember, this is a fairly advanced technique), you can customise the ‘success/failure’ captions (exactly the same as text captions), introduce images to sit behind the hot spots etc.
In the example above, notice how each hot spot has a green ‘correct’ tick in it? Double-click each hot spot in turn and you will be asked whether you want it to be the correct answer.

In this example, every single element of the slide has been customised. Images have been added (we got these off the Web), bespoke buttons have been added (a full library is within Captivate), even a highlight box has been used as a background. This is all a little time-consuming, but you will quickly build up a library of slides which can be used again and again. Note: Keep and eye on the layer stacking order in the timeline so that, for example, the hot spots sit on top of the images.

Sequence Questions
Now, in Fig. 1 we will choose Sequence questions.
Again, each element of the slide has been altered. Remember that question slides are made up of text boxes etc. so whatever choices you use when first setting up the slide can be altered in ‘Edit’ mode.
Question Pools
These improve learner assessments by randomly drawing questions from a set of question pools. Go to Quiz…Question Pools Manager.

The decision to add slide(s) to the Question Pool Manager or to create a new Question Pool is taken before you begin constructing a question slide.
Click the green + arrow to add a new pool or add a slide to a pool.

A final thing, if you choose a Multiple Choice question, you have a few advanced options:

You can choose to ‘Shuffle Answers’ to prevent familiarity with the order of the questions. Also, there is an ‘Advanced’ button (above).
If you check the Advanced Answer options box and make sure the correct answer appears in the Answer box, a drop-down list will give you a number of options for branching or to give specific feedback depending on the answer given.
