                     Karen Roberts to write for
                     American Journal of Nursing
Karen Roberts, RN, B.S.N., M.S.N., a graduate of Graceland School of Nursing Outreach Program has been
selected to write a monthly column for the American Journal of Nursing.
“I’ve always been interested in writing –and in creative writing,” Roberts says. “The longer I’m a nurse, the
more I think it’s important to exercise my creativity.”
Roberts’ work has been published by a variety of publications. Her poetry has appeared in the AJN as well as
in a book published by the nursing honorary society, Sigma Theta Tau. She has written several interviews
published in a Canadian healthcare magazine and one of her humorous essays was published in Skirt!, a regional women’s
magazine in South Carolina. She’s currently working on several long fiction pieces whose plots have nothing to do with healthcare
or nursing.
A 1999 master’s graduate of Graceland, Roberts earned her B.S.N. at Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas. She completed her
master’s in the family nurse practitioner program at Graceland and currently works in an internal medicine practice.

Barritt donates Nursing History items A collection of books, pamphlets, photographs and other items
pertaining to nursing history has been given to Graceland University
to Graceland University and placed in the university’s library on the campus in Independence,
Mo. The items are among those collected over the past several years
by Graceland alumna, Evelyn B. Barritt, Ph.D. Among the collection are several items that pertain to , or were written by,
Florence Nightingale, a 19th century English gentlewoman recognized as the founder of modern nursing.
Barritt, who also is a graduate of the former Independence Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing, said she selected Graceland
for her gift, in part, because she believes the Midwest should have a historical nursing collection. “There are such collections in
London, in New York, and other places,” Barritt said, “But few in the Midwest.”
The collection will be important for postgraduate researchers, Barritt said, adding, “it will fit nicely with the (university’s) Center
for the Korean War archives on the same campus and the Truman Library.”
Barritt has made a lifelong study of Nightingale, selecting the early day nurse as the subject of her dissertation, later expanding
that document into a book. She also has lectured around the world about nursing and Nightingale. Although born into a wealthy
family and discouraged from seeking a career, Nightingale developed an interest in the social issues of her times and, subsequently,
in caring for the ill.
Barritt served as both a dean and professor of nursing at Capital University, Columbus, OH; The University of Iowa, Iowa City;
and the University of Miami, FL. She is a past president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Graceland University has partnered with eCollege (a leading eLearning
technology and services provider) for its online course delivery. School of
Nursing students will benefit from this new online class platform beginning
in May 2004. Students pursuing their Master of Education degree online
have already started using the new platform (initiated in January 2004).

Our hope is to enhance your experience as a student with a simple and
effective online classroom platform. Instead of courses being delivered through webCT, courses will be
managed in eCollege —– a much more user-friendly platform. Using eCollege means having access to a
24 hour help desk with a great reputation for quick response and student satisfaction. It also means added
features in the grade book, an improved threaded discussion format, and more convenience in email and
discussion postings.

We are also pleased with how easy the new platform is to use. If you are currently using WebCT, you’ll
find it especially easy to use eCollege. To make the transition even easier, there is a free online tutorial to
help you learn all you will need to know.

Look for further information about this exciting new course delivery system in the coming months. Those
students who will be using the new platform in May will receive various types of communication walking
them through each step. Graceland looks forward to serving its online students through this tremendous
new partnership!
