Using MyRoad in the AVID Classroom

“MyRoad is the College Board’s easy-to-use, interactive Web site designed to help students explore majors, colleges, and careers. MyRoad combines the College Board’s trusted and popular college search tools with online self-assessments and in-depth information about majors and careers. With this unique, personalized tool, students can plan their futures in a productive and engaging way.”

How can I get started?
• At www.myroad.com, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Site Map.” • In the left column, click on “Start Here! - MyRoad Tour.” • Click on the Tabs to learn about the 6 main parts of MyRoad.
Where are the MyRoad online resources?
• Click on the “Counselor’s Connection” link below (or on your desktop) and scroll down until you see the “MyRoad Downloads” sections. • The “Getting Started with MyRoad” contains a list of PowerPoint slide shows. • The “MyRoad Lesson Plans,” are grouped by grade level and include activities for each of the 6 tabs on the MyRoad website.
MyRoad Online Resources
Using the “I.D. Me” Tab
• After selecting the “I.D Me” tab, students can click on the “Personality Profiles Matrix” to learn about each of the 16 personality types. • Click on the “ORA Personality Profiler” and then select the “Student” version. The “Profiler” asks 100 questions and takes 2030 minutes to complete.
Have students PRINT their final “Career Profile Recommendations” list!!!
About the “Research Careers ” Tab-1
• Organized with 8 broad Topics… - Broken down into general Careers… - Contain 450 specific Occupations. • Each “Career” contains a general “Overview.”
About the “Research Careers ” Tab-2
• Each “Occupation” contains a brief description of the occupation and specific information about “Required Education, Licensure or Certification, Building Your Career, and Compensation.” • Other “Occupation” links to try are: “Where You’ll Work, Outlook, & Perspectives.”
Additional Online Resource
• Not all “Occupations” contain the same categories or amount of information. • Refer students to ACT Student Website… • http://www.actstudent.org • Free Career Planning online resources
Taking Notes…
Support your AVID students with graphic organizers such as concept maps that can serve as “research guides” to assist middle school students with reading and analyzing informational texts found on the Internet.
Using Inspiration…
• Introduce students to the basic features of the software. • Give access to a “scaffolded” template. • Emphasize “Content First” & “Graphics Last.” • Use the “Diagram View” for displaying & the “Outline View” for grading!
