30th-31st August. Scientific sessions in Ferrara 1st-3rd September. Post-Symposium Field Excursions in the Venetian area Scientific sessions will be held at the University of Ferrara. Ferrara is located in the eastern Po Plain in north-eastern Italy between Bologna and Venice. This city is famous for its Renaissance culture and architecture. Traces of the influential Este family can be found everywhere in Ferrara and include the massive castle, complete city walls, as well as the famous Palazzo dei Diamanti.

Accommodations will be organized by the participants on an individual basis. This can be done very conveniently by visiting the official website of the city and province of Ferrara at http://sd2.provincia.fe.it/turismo/tea.nsf/G1HomePage. There are numerous hotels of different standard in Ferrara that can be chosen from. We remind you that during the last week of August the Busker Festival will be held in Ferrara (http://www.ferrarabuskers.com) so we suggest you to book the hotel well beforehand. Please do not wait until the last moment in this regard!

The city of Ferrara is easily reached by convenient motorway or frequent train services (http://sd2.provincia.fe.it/turismo/tea.nsf/G1ComeMuoversiNew?OpenView). The nearest airports are in Bologna and Venice which are within an hour resp. one and a half hours distance from Ferrara by public transport. Train services to the rest of Italy (e.g. Venice, Milan, Florence and Rome) are excellent. Presentations on any aspect of calcareous algae and bacteria are welcome concerning: 1) Biomineralization and Skeletalisation 2) Taxonomy and Systematics 3) Evolutionary History 4) Biogeography and Palaeoclimatology 5) Ecology and Palaeoecology 6) Oceanography and Palaeoceanography 7) Applications to Stratigraphy 8) Taphonomy and Diagenesis

Abstracts should be sent along with the registration form (see below) as an email attachment to Davide Bassi (bsd@unife.it), to Anna Fugagnoli (fggnna@unife.it) or to James Nebelsick (nebelsick@uni-tuebingen.de). The abstracts should be written in English. Authors whose native language is not English are recommended to seek the advice of a native speaker before submitting their Abstracts. Abstracts should not exceed one type-written A4 page. Please use Times New Roman font and 1.5 line spacing throughout the text. The title should be in capital bold letters, centred and at 14 point font size. Name(s) of the author(s), affiliation(s) and present mailing address (plus e-mail address if appropriate) should be centred below the title after one free space and at 12 point font size. The main text should follow after another free space. Please follow the following example:

The main text should be written at 12 point font size, left-justified. Please, avoid hyphenating words and figures. If references are added in the text, cite them with the name of the author(s) in lowercase followed by the year of publication (Smith, 2015). References should be listed at the end of the main text in alphabetic order of author’s names.

The official language of the Symposium is English. Both oral presentations and poster exhibitions will take place in the Dipartimento delle Risorse Naturali e Culturali, Corso Ercole I d’Este 32, Ferrara. Oral Presentations: Projectors for 35 mm slides, overhead projectors, and projectors for Power Point presentations will be available for oral communications. All speakers will be allocated 15 minutes for the presentation, to be followed by 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Poster Presentations: Posters will be displayed in a large hall of the Dipartimento delle Risorse Naturali e Culturali. A space of 1.5 x 1 m will be available for posters.

Selected papers arising from oral and poster presentations will be published either in a special volume or in book form. Guidelines for authors and manuscript deadlines will be provided at the symposium.

The post-symposium filed trip will visit the Colli Berici, Monti Lessini, Rovereto and Gorizia areas. This field excursion will focus on shallow water carbonates including Middle-Upper Eocene calcareous algae (Colli Berici), and Lower Jurassic microbial structures, dasycladaleans, larger foraminifera (Monti Lessini) on the 1st day; Lower Jurassic microbial structures, dasycladaleans, and dinosaurs trackways (Rovereto) on the 2nd day; and dasycladaleans at the K/T boundary (Friuli area) on the 3rd day. The trip will start and finish in Ferrara. Field trip fees include coach fees from and to Ferrara, hotel accommodations (2 nights) as well as two dinners and three lunches.
