Appendix D(II) BLRA Guidelines for the control of alcohol content

Calculation of the standard deviation
The standard deviation (sometimes referred to as the root-mean square deviation) is the square root of the mean value of the squares of all the deviations from the distribution mean (the average) and is calculated by: calculating the deviation of each result from the mean;  squaring each deviation;  calculating the mean of all the squares;  finally calculating the square root of the mean of all the squares. The formula is given as s.d. () =  (x-x)2 n-1 where s.d. () x x  is one standard deviation is the mean (average) value of the population is the value of any particular value in the population of n, numbers x1,x2,x3, etc. indicates that all the possible values of (x-x)2 are to be added together.
