Before getting started:
    Make sure „virtual memory‟ is off
          o Click on the Apple icon on the top-left of the screen
                   Select „Control Panels‟
                         Select „Memory‟
                               o Make sure the „virtual memory‟ section is toggled to the
                                   „Off‟ position
                                       Restart the computer if you had to change the
                                          setting to „Off‟. If it is already set in the „Off‟
                                          position, proceed without restarting.


      Turn the energy saver sleep mode to „Never‟
          o Click on the Apple icon on the top-left of the screen
                   Select „Control Panels‟
                          Select „Energy Saver‟
                                 o Under „Sleep Setup‟, slide the dial to „Never‟ on the far
                                    right.

Opening imovie and creating a new project
                                    1. Open imovie by double-clicking on the imovie icon
                                        on the desktop.
                                    2. Click on „File‟ and select „New Project‟
                                    3. Name your project
                                    4. Your movie file is now on the desktop


          This is the imovie screen.

Importing video from VHS
      1. Turn on the TV and VCR
      2. Turn on the Sony Media Converter (small silver box between VCR and Mac)
      3. For Input Selection, push „Analog In‟ (a green light should appear on the box)
      4. At the bottom left of the imovie screen, make sure the blue button is toggled to the
          side with the camera icon (looks like a movie camera).
      5. The imovie screen will appear with a button below it that says „Import‟.
      6. Push „play‟ on the VCR and cue the video to where you want to import it into imovie.
      7. Push the „Import‟ button when you are ready to download a clip.
      8. Push the „Import‟ button again when you are ready to stop the clip.
      9. Use the VCR‟s functions to control the VHS tape between downloading clips.
      10. A yellow clip will appear to the right of the imovie screen on the shelf.
      11. The top of the clip displays the time length of the clip.
      12. The bottom of the clip says “clip 01”. You can rename this by double-clicking on the
          “clip-01”. Rename it and hit „Return‟
      13. Continue this process until you have imported all of the video clips desired.
      14. At the bottom left of the imovie screen, make sure the blue button is toggled to the
          side with the edit icon (looks like a small piece of film).




               This is an empty clip shelf.




      When video has been imported, A

     Arranging video clips in a movie
        1. Select the clip you want to edit (it will highlight yellow)
        2. Copy the clip by clicking on the „Edit‟ menu at the top of the screen and select „Copy‟
        3. Click on the timeline viewer (the three bars at the bottom of the screen). Click on the
           „Edit‟ menu again and select „Paste‟.
        4. The clip will appear and be highlighted in yellow. *Below are two timeline viewers.
           The first one contains no clips. The second one contains titles, transitions, effects and
           audio. The yellow clip is selected.




     To edit video clips
            1. Select the video clip from the shelf that you want to edit.
            2. View the entire clip by pushing the „Play‟ arrow.
            3. To cut off portions of the clip at the beginning, end, or middle, decide where you
                want the clip to begin.
            4. Slide the playhead (white triangle) along the scrubber bar to where you want the
                clip to begin.
            5. Slowly move the mouse to just below the playhead and scrubber bar.
            6. Click, hold and drag to make the video clip crop markers appear.
            7. Drag the marker to the right to where you want the clip to end.
            8. Let up on the mouse to deselect.
            9. There should be a portion of the clip that is highlighted in yellow.

***If you mistakenly cleared or cropped at this point, immediately go to the edit menu and select
„Undo‟

       10. To keep the footage that is contained in the yellow, go to the edit menu and select
           „Crop‟
       11. To delete the footage that is contained in the yellow, go to the edit menu and select
           „Cut‟
       12. After either selection, the clip in the scrubber bar is all blue again.

To adjust existing sound on a clip
   1. Highlight the clip you want to adjust the sound on.
   2. Slide the volume control in the timeline viewer up or down. If you slide the volume
      control all the way down, you will no longer here the existing sound for that clip.
   3. The existing sound for each clip must be altered by highlighting each clip separately.

   1. Select the clip you want to add from the clip viewer.
          Go to the edit menu and select „Copy‟
   2. Click on the timeline viewer and move the playhead to either the front or the back of the
      clip, depending on where you want to insert the new clip. Moving the playhead to the

           front of a clip, will insert the new clip before the existing clip. Moving the playhead to
           the back of a clip will insert the new clip after the existing clip.
        3. Once the playhead is in the desired spot, go to the edit menu and select „Paste‟.
        4. The new video clip will appear either before or after the existing clip and will
           automatically be highlighted yellow.
        5. Edit as needed.

    To add a title
       1. Click on the „Title‟ box in the imovie menu bar.
       2. The title is defaulted to appear over a black screen. If you want the title to appear over a
          clip, deselect the checked box that says „Over Black‟
       3. If you plan to view the exported movie on a TV, select the „QT Margins‟ box so that
          none of the title will get cut off.

        4. Change the font color by clicking on the „Color‟ box.
        5. Change the font style by clicking on the arrows in the font menu.
        6. Change the font size by sliding the knob along the little A/big A bar. The font will get
           smaller or bigger depending on which way you slide the knob.
        7. Type in your title where the two text lines appear.
        8. Select „Preview‟ to see how it will appear. Notice the changes in the preview window.
        9. Change the effect of how the title appears by selecting any of the effects with a “T” box
           next to it.

   10. If the title scrolls, you can change the direction of the scrolling by selecting any of the
       direction arrows to the left of the title effects box.
   11. To change the speed in which the title appears, use the „Speed‟ slider to speed up or slow
       down the title. Moving the knob to the left on the slider will increase the speed that the
       title appears and moving the knob to the right on the slider will decrease the speed.
   12. If there is a pause in the title style you choose, you can use the „Pause‟ slider to change
       the duration of the pause.
   13. Once you have adjusted the title to your liking, click and drag the greenish „T‟ icon
       (located in the effects menu) to the front of the clip where you want it to appear. A blue
       highlight will appear as you drag the „T‟ icon over a place where it can be inserted. If the
       highlight occurs where you want the title to be inserted, unclick the mouse. The title may
       take a few seconds to format. It is formatting if there‟s a red bar beneath the highlighted
       title in the timeline viewer.


     As you drag the „T‟ icon across an area that where a
     title can be inserted, a green bar will highlight.

To add a transition between clips:
       A transition is a blending of frames between to clips to smooth a cut.
1. Click on the „Transition‟ box in the imovie menu bar.
2. Preview various transition choices by clicking on the „Preview‟ button.
3. Adjust the speed slider to the desired speed.
       a. Moving the slider to the right increases the duration of the transition.
       b. Moving the slider to the left decreases the duration of the transition.
       c. The speed appears in the preview window of the transition panel.

4. When the desired transition and speed have been selected, drag the green transition icon to
   the timeline viewer. A blue highlight will appear as the drag the icon over a place where it
   can be inserted. If the highlight occurs where you want the title to be inserted, unclick the

         mouse. The title may take a few seconds to format. It is formatting if there‟s a red bar
         beneath the highlighted title in the timeline viewer.


     To add credits:

         3. All of the above except „Music video‟ will highlight the +/- symbols to the right of the
            text box.
                 a. The „+‟ will add a new text box and the „-„ will delete a text box.
                 b. You can reorder text boxes by dragging them to the desired location.
         4. The „Speed‟ slider will adjust how fast the credits appear or move across the screen.
                 a. Sliding the bar to the right will slow down the title.
                 b. Sliding the bar to the left will speed up the title.
         5. The „Pause‟ slider will adjust how long a title pauses on the screen. It is not applicable to
            all title styles so it will not always be active.
         6. Directional arrows to the left of the title styles box will be activated if the title can have a
            directional change. A blue highlight will appear in the direction that the title is currently
            set at. Click on another arrow and see it appear in blue highlight.
         7. Credits are defaulted to appear on a black screen. To have them appear over a clip,
            deselect the „Over Black‟ box. Change the font color by clicking on the „Color‟ box.
            Click the „QT Margins‟ box if you plan to export your movie for viewing on a television
            screen.
         8. Push preview to view the credits.
         9. When the credits are complete, Drag the „T‟ icon to the end of your clip.

     To add Audio into imovie: Bring your own headphones!

     6. A yellow highlight will appear in the timeline viewer. Let go of the mouse to place the
         audio clip.
     7. To put two different audio clips at a same time, put the second audio clip in the second
         audio line (small speaker icon 2) in the timeline viewer in the same spot as the first audio
         clip.
     8. To delete the audio clip, select it and go to EDIT menu and select CUT.
     9. You cannot edit the length of the audio clip.

  To use audio clips from your personal CD
     1. Insert the CD into the Mac.
     2. Click on the „Audio‟ box in the imovie menu bar.
     3. The audio tracks of your CD appear in the second box.
     4. Choose a track number that you want to put in your movie.
            a. There are two ways to insert a track. One way will insert an entire song and the
                other way will allow you to insert a portion of the song.
                    i. Inserting an entire song
                        Click the icon of small CD of the track number
                        Drag and put it to the small speaker icon of the timeline viewer.

                      If the song is longer than your movie, you can adjust the length of the
                      audio clip using the cursor of the timeline viewer.
                      Hold and slide the black symbol at the end of the purple audio clip to
                      where you want the music to end.
                      Then select „Edit‟ and then „Crop‟

                   ii. Inserting a portion of a song
                       Move the cursor in the timeline viewer to where you want to insert the
                       music.
                       Click „Record Music‟ to start the music then click „Stop‟ to stop it.

General Audio preferences
   1. Adjust the sound for each audio row 1&2 by adjusting the volume control in the timeline
      viewer.
   2. Fade music in and out by clicking on the „Fade in‟ box or the „Fade out‟ box
   3. To put two different audio clips at a same, put the second audio clip in the second line of
      small mike of the timeline viewer in the same spot with the first audio clip.
   4. To delete the audio clip, select it and go to EDIT menu and select CUT.
   5. Sounds can be copied and pasted.




To overlay a voice in imovie using the Mac built-in microphone
   1. Make sure the built-in microphone is turned on by following these steps:
          a. Open the Apple pull-down menu
          b. Go to „Control Panels‟
          c. Select „Sound‟
          d. A pop-up box will appear-if it doesn‟t, hide your imovie screen and expose the
              Desktop.
          e. Select the „Input‟ folder
          f. Select „Built-in Mic‟
          g. Check the box next to „Check Signal Level‟
          h. Speak into the small opening at the top of the Mac monitor. As you speak, your
              voice should activate the mic levels.
   2. Move the cursor of timeline viewer to the spot where you want to input voice.
   3. Click „RECORD VOICE‟ and start speaking into the small opening at the top of the Mac
      monitor.
   4. Click „STOP‟ to end recording.

   5. You can adjust the volume by sliding the volume control up and down.

To overlay a voice in imovie using an EXTERNAL microphone
BRING YOUR OWN MIC
   1 Plug in the external mic on the right side of the Mac where other periphery devices are
      already plugged in. There is a small microphone symbol (right below it is a speaker
      symbol)
   2 Make sure the external microphone is turned on by following these steps:
          a. Open the Apple pull-down menu
          b. Go to „Control Panels‟
          c. Select „Sound‟
          d. A pop-up box will appear-if it doesn‟t, hide your imovie screen and expose the
              Desktop.
          e. Select the „Input‟ folder
          f. Select „External Mic‟
          g. Check the box next to „Check Signal Level‟
          h. Speak into the small external mic. As you speak, your voice should activate the
              mic levels. If not, turn up the volume where it says „Gain‟
          i. Close the window by clicking on the small box in the top left corner.
   6. Move the cursor of timeline viewer to the spot where you want to input voice.
   7. Click „RECORD VOICE‟ and start speaking into the external mic.
   8. Click „STOP‟ to end recording.
   9. You can adjust the volume by sliding the volume control up and down.

Opening your CFS account on the Mac:
  1. Pull down the Apple menu
  2. Select „Chooser‟
  3. Click „Appleshare‟
  4. On the right side of the popup menu, a grey bar that says “Server IP Address” will
      appear. Click on that.
  5. In the blank space type: cfs.iu.edu
  6. hit return
  7. Type in your username and CFS password
  8. Select the CFS account that is YOUR username. DO NOT select Scratch or Share.
  9. Click OK
  10. Close the „Chooser‟ window (click on the box in the top left corner)
  11. Your CFS icon should be on the desktop


Exporting your imovie to QuickTime Video:
   1. Go to the „File‟ pull-down menu and select „Export Movie‟
   2. The „Export Movie‟ window will pop-up that says
   3. Where it says “Export”, click on the arrows and select „To QuickTime‟
   4. A “Formats” section will appear. Click on the arrows and select „CD-ROM Movie,
      Medium‟. This will have a screen that is 320x240 pixels with 15 frames per second.
   5. Pull down the same menu again and select the bottom item that says „Expert‟

   6. Two sections will appear. The first one is „Image Settings‟ and the second one is „Audio
       Settings‟
   7. Click „Settings‟ on the „Image Settings‟ side and scroll down to „Sorenson Video‟. Leave
       the quality at „Medium‟ and click OK.
   8. Click „Settings‟ on the „Audio Settings‟ side.
   9. The „Compressor‟ should say „None‟, and the kHz should be set by default at 22.050
   10. For „Size:‟ Select „16 bit‟ and for „Use:‟ select „Mono‟
   11. Click OK
   12. Then OK
   13. Then Export
   14. Select where you want to save it (Either the Desktop or your CFS account).
   15. Change the movie name if necessary then click „Save‟
   16. It will depend on how large the imovie file is as to how long it will take to convert to a
       QuickTime movie.
   17. When it‟s complete, a QuickTime icon will appear in the place that you saved it to.

Exporting your imovie to VHS:
   1. Turn on the TV and VCR
   2. Turn on the Sony Media Converter (small silver box between VCR and Mac)
   3. For input selection, push the „DV In‟ button (a green light should appear on the box)
   4. In the bottom left of your imovie screen (just above the timeline viewer) there is a blue
       button that can switch from a camera symbol that says „DV‟ and a film clip symbol.
       Switch the button to the camera symbol that says „DV‟
           a. The imovie screen will turn blue and the screen will say “Camera No Tape”
   5. Go to the „File‟ menu and select „Export Movie‟
   6. A box will pop up.
           a. In the pull-down menu, select „To Camera‟
           b. Leave everything else alone.
   7. Select „Export‟
   8. A box will pop up that says “Your camera appears to have no tape inserted, or maybe a
       converter box. Okay to continue with export?”
   9. This is okay so select „Export‟
   10. Be sure to push record on the VCR- you will also have 5 seconds to push record after you
       select the „Export‟ button.
   11. You should see the imovie on the TV screen and the imovie screen.
