TUTORIAL WORKSHOP ON ATMOSPHERIC INVERSE MODELLING
NOVEMBER 27 – DECEMBER 2, 2006
Organised by
CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation (C-MMACS) NAL Belur Campus, Bangalore – 560 037
Objective:
There is a strong consensus amongst scientists and planners today that the earth's climate is entering a warm episode, nudged primarily by human activities of fossil fuel burning and landuse changes that inject steadily increasing amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. Some inverse model results have already yielded certain counter-intuitive results, notably that both the southern ocean and the tropical lands are neutral with respect to the atmospheric carbon budget, whereas these regions are generally regarded to be important sinks for Carbon. Notwithstanding these early puzzles, inverse modelling of globally monitored CO2 concentrations, provide a major visualization tool for identifying and quantifying carbon fluxes, whether for improving the Global Carbon Cycle model or for monitoring compliance with emission protocols. With this background, we plan to have a workshop in C-MMACS in accordance with the importance of atmospheric inverse modelling. We will have Dr. Peter Rayner from LSCE, France, a distinguished inverse modeller in atmospheric transport, in India during this period visiting IIA, Bangalore under a collaborative programme. He has agreed to deliver lectures in this workshop and make it interactive with tutorials. He will be addressing atmospheric transport and its inversion with uncertainty using different methods like Bayesian Inversion, adjoint & variational methods, Kalman filtering and compare them with classical matrix inversion. He will also be talking about nonlinear problem in atmospheric transport and also regional inversion. He plans to deliver a lecture each on network design , observation and data assimilation.
Pre-requisite:
The programme is targeted at scientists/engineers and students interested in learning the mathematical and computational frameworks of Inverse modelling of atmospheric transport of species. Participants are expected to have some familiarity with the basics of Linear Algebra, Statistics & Probability Theory and Computational capability. Applicants whose research is oriented in atmospheric inverse modelling will get priority.
Procedure for Registration
Intending applicants may send their resume, along with a statement (200 words) conveying their motivation to attend the workshop, to the co-ordinator by e-mail before November 05, 2006. Applicants are advised to provide their e-mail addresses and fax numbers for quick communication after selection. Selected participants will be informed by e-mail/fax immediately. On selection the registration form along with registration fees must be sent to C-MMACS latest by November 20, 2006. Selected applicants have to make their travel plans accordingly.
