"Tutorial 1 Week 2"
Tutorial 2 – Week 3 Question 1 The answers to this question need to be prepared ahead of class and handed in. Aim for about 200 words. Use your own words. Case 2: The New Zealand Racing Board Read the case carefully. On page 7, paragraph 3, it states that the Board had set their strategic direction towards “getting as many people as possible back to the races by improving the course experience – the entertainment”. This was important because the NZRB had to support the racing industry, which included all the jockeys, the trainers, all the people involved in the stables, breeding, etc. Otherwise they could simply have covered many more international events and many more other sports than they currently did. a) List at least six ways in which IT/IS could contribute to “improving the course experience”. The NZRB would want to get as many people to the races as possible so note the reference to customer databases on page 7, paragraph 5. That should give you some ideas. The important thing is that IT/IS should contribute to each of these ways. b) Choose four of these ways and write a sentence or two on each, expanding on how it could be done and why it would increase attendance. Question 2 This question needs to be considered and discussed in class. You do not need to submit your answers but come prepared to discuss them in your tutorial. Online gambling is a huge money spinner. Billions of dollars are involved in the industry worldwide. However, it has been found that addictive behaviour is exacerbated by the „secretive‟ nature of the activity and many people and their families suffer financial ruin as a result. Furthermore, online gambling often means that huge amounts of revenue and taxes are lost to the country. In an effort to stop/control all this, a number of countries have banned online gambling, or introduced restrictive measures. On the other hand, many countries see it as a way of earning large amounts of foreign currency, and allow online casinos to be established in their countries. These are often smaller, poorer countries. a) Think objectively about the advantages and disadvantages of online gambling. b) What do you think the approach of New Zealand should be, and why?
