Elsevier is an integral partner with the scientific, technical and health communities, delivering superior information products and services that foster communication, build insights, and enable individual and collective advancement in scientific research and health care. POCKETConsult is the name of Elsevier’s mobile component designed to allow PDA users to take information with them wherever they go. This End User Guide provides a comprehensive set of instructions to install the POCKETConsult application on your mobile device, as well as guidance on how to customize features to help you download meaningful information from the website. You will follow step-by-step directions and view screen captures as you read through the sections. It is our intention that after reading this guide you are able to take full advantage of the vast reference material stored on the Elsevier site and discover ways to use the features to save time and gain efficiencies throughout your day. OVERVIEW POCKETConsult is a tool for managing your Elsevier mobile content. Through it you can customize a mix of available content to download and use on your mobile device. The key functionality of the application is: ❧ ❧ ❧ ❧ ❧ ❧ Channel manager – Select and customize content and clinical utilities to be downloaded to your mobile device Library – Download and manage the eBooks on your device and memory cards. Searches – Initiate searches on your mobile device and execute them on a product’s website Bookmarks – Flag mobile content on which you want to read more, then link back to the product site for more information Content ClipperTM – Select custom chunks of content from a product site to download directly to your mobile device User profile – Manage your user information GETTING STARTED Installation For devices with the Palm operating system (Palm, Sony and Handspring devices), first make sure that HotSync 3.7 is present on the device. Then run the installer (either from the New User registration process or the Download/Install tab). Run the install wizard, then cradle and POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 3 of 18 synchronize the device. This is the first of two required synchronizations. When the first synchronization is complete, you can select the content that you wish to download to your PDA. Synchronize again. Remember: The first synchronization installs the application; the second synchronization downloads the content. The application will not work without the second synchronization. After the initial install, you will only need to synchronize once to download content. The initial download process may take a few minutes. The time required depends on how much content you have selected to download. For Pocket PC devices with the Pocket PC operating system (OS), you must remove older versions of Mobipocket prior to the install to ensure success. Run the Install Wizard then cradle and synchronize the device. Remove the device from the cradle. Select the content that you wish to have on your Pocket PC device. Cradle the device again and synchronize. Remember: The first synchronization installs the application; the second synchronization downloads the content. The application will not work without the second synchronization. Pocket PC devices must be removed from the cradle in between synchronizations. See Section 1.2.4, System Requirements, for a list of the device models that are supported by POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 4 of 18 this application. Accessing POCKETConsult POCKETConsult can be accessed in one of two ways: directly at http://pocketconsult.elsevier.com, or by logging into your product website, then clicking on the POCKETConsult link on the site. This link may be displayed as “My PDA” on some sites, such as MD Consult. The first time you access POCKETConsult from a particular site, you will be asked to log in. This action records your product login information in POCKETConsult. For most products, this will be the only time you need to log in – when you access POCKETConsult subsequent times, it will remember you and automatically log you in. Authorizing Entitlements In order to use an entitlement (such as MD Consult) on POCKETConsult, you must first authorize the product for use. To do this, log into the product’s website as usual, then click the POCKETConsult link. At the login page, enter your POCKETConsult user name (your email address) and password, and the entitlement will be activated in your channel manager. System Requirements POCKETConsult requires ActiveSync 3.6 or higher and HotSync manager 4.1 or higher. Supported operating systems are PalmOS 3.5.2 and higher and Pocket PC 2000, 2002, and 2003. Though all devices running the above OS/Sync combinations should work, the following specific devices have been tested with Pocket Consult. Operating System: Pocket PC Palm OS Supported Devices: iPAQ 3650, DELL Axim, Toshiba e740, iPAQ 1910, iPAQ h1940, iPAQ 5550, iPAQ 3870, HP Jornada, Garmin iQue 3600. Palm M505, Palm VIIx, Palm Tungsten T, Palm Tungsten TE, Palm Tungsten T3, Palm Zire 21, Palm Tungsten C, Handspring Visor Prism, Sony Clie NR70V, Sony Clie NX70V, Sony Clie SJ22, Handspring Treo 300 Using memory cards to store eBooks requires Palm OS 4 or higher, or Pocket PC 2000 or higher. POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 5 of 18 Sony Clies with memory cards using Palm OS 3.5 will not work with the POCKETConsult Library. SELECTING WEB CONTENT The following sections will guide you through the process of selecting web content to download to your mobile device. Channel Manager The Channel Manager is your center for selecting content to download to your mobile device. The download process involveds three easy steps: 1. Choose the channels you want by checking the boxes next to the desired selections. Certain channel names appear as links. This means that there is additional customization possible. For example, journal channels allow you to select which abstracts you would like to receive. Simply click on the channel name and follow the instructions to specify the content you’d like to receive. 2. Save your selections by clicking the ‘Save Selections’ button. 3. Sync your PDA to download the content you have selected. POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 6 of 18 Library POCKETConsult’s library is a central source for downloading your Elsevier e-Books. How do you get eBooks? EBooks are available in one of two ways. First, they can be purchased through the POCKETShop. Second, you may receive them as part of your subscription to another product. For example, all POCKETConsult users receive Mosby’s Drug Consult, and all FIRSTConsult users receive the FIRSTConsult eBook. How do you download your eBooks? You will find your eBooks in the POCKETConsult library page. Use the drop-down on the right of the page to select where to download your book, then hit the ‘Save for Next Sync’ button. When you Sync your PDA, the eBook will be downloaded to the selected location. eBooks can be downloaded to your PDA’s device memory or to an external memory card. You can also use the library to remove a book, redownload it, or transfer it between the device and card. Be aware that the ‘Current Status’ listed on the library page can be incorrect if you manually change the location of a book on your device or remove your memory card. Note: eBooks may take several minutes to download, depending on their size. Please be patient. Note: Very large eBooks may run slowly from a memory card on Palm OS Devices, due to limitations in the way Palm handles large files. Currently, FIRSTConsult is the only eBook in POCKETConsult that has this issue. If you run into this problem, we recommend downloading the eBook to standard device memory if possible, where it should respond more quickly. POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 7 of 18 Searches Searches are created and saved on your PDA. At sync time, they are uploaded to the POCKETConsult server. You can view your searches on the Saved Searches page. From this page, select the product that you wish to target for the search and click execute. A new window will open within the product site with the results of your search. Bookmarks In some mobile content, there are “bookmark” links that allow you to flag an item for more information. These are uploaded at sync time and can be found in Bookmarks. Clicking on a link will take you to the product website for more information. For example, a journal abstract on the mobile device may have a bookmark link that allows you to link back to the full text of the article on the web. POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 8 of 18 Content ClipperTM Some product websites (currently the e-Ditions) have implemented Content ClipperTM, a service that allows you to download a predefined set of content to your mobile device. This lets you custom-publish a set of content to be instantly available to you at the point of care. Clipped content submitted from an e-Dition web site will be downloaded to your PDA at the next sync and will be available under “Content ClipperTM) on the Channels tab. Use the web interface to view your current clipped content and to remove ones you don’t want any more. User Profile To change your email address, password, or personal information, use the My Account section. POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 9 of 18 PDA COMPONENT Overview The POCKETConsult PDA application is a reader for navigating your Elsevier content and launching your clinical utilities. Click OK to close Pop up POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 13 of 18 Frequently Asked Questions PDA Installation Q: Why must I synchronize my device twice during the installation process? A: The first synchronization will install the POCKETConsult software to your PDA which contains the framework against which the content is stored. The next step is for you to select content from the website. Sync again and the content is downloaded. Q: What if I am having troubles installing? A: If you are having troubles installing, you should check a few things: ❧ Ensure you have the latest version of HotSync (4.1) or ActiveSync (3.7) ❧ Check the available memory on your device (a minimum of 1.5 MB is recommended, more if you are downloading large items such as Drug Consult) ❧ Delete any old versions of Mobipocket reader or Pocket Consult from your device ❧ Recradle and attempt to install again Q: What if I am having troubles with the initial sync? I am getting an error when I click the POCKETConsult launcher saying “POCKETConsult is not found on this device.” A: Occasionally the device will lose connection during its initial sync. If this happens, the problem is often remedied by recradling and attempting to sync again. Q: Why do I have the wrong resolution? A: If the images on your device look too large or too small, you may have made the wrong selection during the installation process. Uninstall Mobipocket and POCKETConsult from your device and reinstall with the correct resolution. Q: How much space is required on my device? A: The required memory will vary based on the amount of content you select to download. Typically the minimum memory is 1.5 MB. Downloading Drug Consult, eBooks, or other large content selections will require more memory. Q: How do I check the available space on my device? POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 14 of 18 A: From the Palm’s desktop, click the menu button and then the info selection. Check there for the available memory on your device. On a Pocket PC device, go to Start > Settings > Memory to see the available memory on the device. Q: I get a dialog box telling me that user ID was not found. A: The installation has probably already been run and the user ID was erased from the desktop. To re-install or install for a different user return to the POCKETConsult web site and go through the installation process again. Q: For Pocket PC users only: I get a dialog box telling me the install was unable to install my user ID. A: ActiveSync must be installed and the device must be connected and turned on. Test your connection by syncing with ActiveSync. Q: I exited the Mobipocket Reader installation before it completed and the POCKETConsult installation did not seem to succeed. A: If you exit the Mobipocket Reader installation (a separate install embedded within POCKETConsult) before it completes you will need to run the POCKETConsult installation again. Q: For Palm users only: I get a dialog box telling me that the installation failed and that I should verify HotSync is installed. A: For Palm it is not necessary to have the device connected while the POCKETConsult installation program runs but you must have HotSync installed and at least one HotSync user on the desktop. You can test this by cradling your device and performing a HotSync. Q: For Palm users only: I finished the POCKETConsult installation program but the installation process does not seem to be completed. A: You must perform a HotSync to finish the installation process. The POCKETConsult installation places files in the HotSync install folders but they will not actually be installed to the device until a HotSync is performed. Q: What happens if I get a new PDA? POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 15 of 18 A: If you change devices, you need to reinstall PC on your machine. If you have previously download eBooks, call customer service to reset the Mobipocket device ID (PID) for your account. This is required to maintain security for your downloaded eBooks. Q: I get a "File not found" error when trying to open PC on device the first time. A: You have installed POCKETConsult, but haven't downloaded content yet. You need to resync your device. If this doesn?t work, reinstall POCKETConsult and try again. Q: For Palm users only: I do not see my HotSync username listed in the dropdown list when prompted during installation. A: You are probably installing on a public machine or a machine that is not yours and therefore your HotSync user profile may not exist on that machine. You can use the Palm Desktop application to create a new user profile for yourself on that machine. Authorizing Entitlements Q: If I have access to a product on the Elsevier site, will I automatically have access to view the product on my PDA? A: In order to view your entitlement’s mobile content on your PDA, you must first authorize the entitlement. Go to the product’s website, click on the POCKETConsult link, and log in using your POCKETConsult ID. Your entitlement will now appear in your Channel Manager. PDA Synchronization Q: Why does syncing take so long? A: Synchronization time will depend on the amount of content you are downloading. As a rough guideline, on a high-speed internet connection, downloading 10 journals will take approximately 80 seconds. Downloading a 1.5 MB e-Book such as Drug Consult will take 2½ minutes. Q: How often is content updated? A: Content is updated at varying schedules depending on the product. Journal and news updates are updated weekly. Books may be updated monthly to yearly, depending on the product. Q: For Pocket PC users only: When I sync I get an unresolved item in ActiveSync. POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 16 of 18 A: Please perform the following steps: 1. Cradle your device. The ActiveSync window should open. (If not, click the "Start" menu, choose "Programs", then choose "Microsoft ActiveSync". 2. In the ActiveSync window, click the "Tools" menu and choose "Add/Remove Programs...". 3. Uncheck the Mobipocket item, then click the Remove button. If your handheld device displays an error message, this is OK. Simply tap the OK button to discard it. 4. Close the ActiveSync window. 5. Remove your handheld device from its cradle and then replace it in the cradle to ensure it is still fully connected to your desktop computer. 6. Reinstall POCKETConsult. Q: For Pocket PC users only: When I sync I don't appear to get new content on my device. A: Synchronize your device again. If this doesn’t work, try reinstalling POCKETConsult. Q: Even though I synchronized my device, I don't see my searches. A: If you were already logged onto POCKETConsult, you will need to refresh your Search page. (Right click, then click on Refresh.) Updating PDA Content Q: I don't have any journals on my PDA. A: Check that you have selected journals in the My Journals page. If you have not selected any journals, go to the Add Journals page and follow the instructions to select one or more journals. Once you've selected all the journals you want on your PDA, synchronize your PDA. Q: How is POCKETConsult content updated? A: POCKETConsult Content is updated when you sync your PDA with your desktop. News content is updated daily, and your PDA carries the last 5 days worth of news stories. Drug Updates are updated every Thursday night, available Friday morning, and your PDA carries the last 5 weeks worth of updates. Journal content is updated daily, and for the Journals you have selected, the most recent version of your Journal will be stored and updated on your handheld. When a new issue of a Journal is published, POCKETConsult will replace the version on your PDA. POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 17 of 18 Q: What happens if I run out of space on my device? A: If you select too many journals or channels to download, it is possible you can run out of space on your device, and content synchronization will fail. We recommend deselecting some journals/channels and syncing again. Navigating POCKETConsult Q: What is the best way to move between pages of text in POCKETConsult? A: Use the device's "Up" and "Down" keys to move up and down in a page. Q: I tapped on the PDA to scroll down to the next page on a news article. Why doesn't the back icon take me back to the previous text within the article? A: When you tap the screen to scroll down within the article, you remain in the same page. The back button will take you back to the previous page. To page up and down within the news article page, use your device's "Up" and "Down" button. POCKETConsult End User Guide | 6/29/2004 18 of 18
