Business Source Premier Tutorial Business Source Premier provides full-text articles in many business subjects, including company and industry information, marketing, small business administration, management, product reviews, economics, finance, international business and more. Business Source Premier has over 2,700 scholarly journals in its collection. With the Enhanced Business Searching Interface, you can easily research company profiles, country reports, industry profiles and market research reports. As an EBSCO product, Business Source Premier can be searched simultaneously with other EBSCO databases to maximize search results. BASIC SEARCH •From the list of databases, select Business Source Premier to open a basic search screen. Across the top are a number of tabs, the Basic Search tab is highlighted in green. NOTE: If you wish to combine EBSCO databases in a search, click the “Choose Databases” tab to open a list of choices. Listed alphabetically, Academic Search Premier and Regional Business News are most likely to be useful in business research. Check the boxes next to the databases, and click “Continue.” Databases have some limits in common, while others are unique. When searching multiple databases, special limiters for each will be indicated . •You can combine your keywords with AND, or scroll down the screen and under Expand your search to: select Automatically “And” search terms – the database puts the AND(s) in for you. (Try this) •In the Find: box, type the following: television advertising teenagers Business Source Premier Tutorial 5-06 •Under Limit your results: select Full Text (Note: by selecting “full text,” you exclude citations and abstracts from search results. Full text articles will be in either HTML (text only – no graphics) or PDF format (appears just as it was published and has all graphics). •For Published Date, set limits from January 2003 to May 2006. •Under Expand your search to: select Automatically “And” search terms. •Click Search. •You should retrieve about 85 citations. (Note: databases are updated daily, so this number will change.) •The citation has information that you must include when you list the sources you have used for your paper in the “Works Cited” page. For citation examples and information on how to write them correctly, click on Help in the upper right corner of the screen. Scroll down the list of links on the left until you reach Citation Styles. •Citations will appear by date, beginning with the most recently published articles. To have the best keyword matches appear at the beginning of the list, go to Sort by: and switch to Relevance. •Look at the citation to the article “Connected and craving: Teens hungry for latest cellphone technology.” Click the HTML Full Text link to open the complete article. Business Source Premier Tutorial 5-06 •At the top of the screen are some links which include the following: Result List Takes you back to list of citations Refine Search You can make changes to your search strategy. Citation Has links to author, source, subject headings, etc. E-mail Allows you to e-mail the article. ADVANCED SEARCH •Click on the Advanced Search tab at the top of the screen. •In an advanced search, you can combine your terms with boolean operators (and, or, not) in the pulldown menus on the left. On the right are pull-down menus that offer many choices of indexes (author, article title, publication name, company, NAICS code, ticker symbol etc). If you are searching very specifically (e.g. looking for an article by title or author, or searching for information on a company), these can be useful. For general keyword searches, you can leave this at Default Fields. •An advanced search also allows additional ways to limit searches (editorials, reports, interviews, case studies, speeches and many others). (Try this) •Combine “microbreweries,” and “restaurants.” •Under Limit your results: select Full Text, and for Publication Type, select Trade Publication. •Click Search. Business Source Premier Tutorial 5-06 •You should retrieve about thirty articles that meet the limits for this search. As in the Basic Search, click on the HTML or PDF Full Text link to open the full text of any article. ENHANCED BUSINESS SEARCH INTERFACE The link to Enhanced Business Search Interface is just below Business Source Premier on the Online Databases page. You can also access it by selecting the “Choose Databases” tab when you’re using any EBSCO database. This interface is excellent for locating information about companies, industries, country reports and market research. Business Source Premier Tutorial 5-06
