ACCIDENTS

BOMB THREAT Response to Bomb Threat 1. Get as much information from caller as you can: What does the bomb look like? Were is the bomb located? When will the bomb set to explode? Why did you place the bomb in the school?
2. Stay calm after hanging up. Use call tracing *_____. Listen to announcement. 3. Notify the principle or person in change of the facility. 4. Contact local Police Department. 5. Calmly begin evacuation of the student facility. 6. If the caller identified a location within the building, avoid that area when evacuating. Use IDENTIFYING EMERGENCY COLOR CODE AND IDENTIFY LOCATION. 7. After evacuation, write all information down about the caller, background noise, caller’s voice/accent, etc. 8. DISCOVERY OF SUSPICIOUS ITEMS – DO NOT TOUCH OR DISTURB. 9. DO NOT USE CELL PHONES OR PORTABLE RADIOS.
BUS ACCIDENT 1. Bus driver notifies administrative main office about an accident: Ask driver to stay calm and describe accident location. Have the police been contacted? Office will call 9-1-1 if not contacted. What type of injuries to the passenger(s)? Can you name the student(s) injured? Has the accident scene been secured? Bus driver is not to talk to anyone about the accident except for police. What assistance do you need?
Contact insurance claims office to report accident. Phone ________________. 2. Send supervisor to accident scene. 3. Identify students who are on the bus. Account for all students. 4. Begin notification of the parents when information is obtained from on-site supervisor. 5. Do not tell anyone that the school will pay all expenses or medical bills. 6. Assist in arranging medical treatment. A school representative should accompany injured passenger to the hospital. 7. _________________ will contact the parents.
CHEMICAL SPILLS Response to Chemical Spills 1. Contact the main administrative office: Describe the location of the spill. Describe the material and physical state (liquid or gas). Describe the size of spill. Describe type of container and volume. 2. Evacuate students and staff in the affected area. Use a safe pathway that takes students away from spill or exposure to chemical. 3. Secure the door. Take attendance and grade book. 4. Establish a hot or danger zone and barricade area off or post faculty to prevent unauthorized entry. 5. Shut down air conditioning system. If flammable, disconnect electrical power sources. (Maintenance personnel are to throw the breaker to the area and adjacent areas.) 6. Contact the Fire Department for emergency response and assessment. 7. Secure the Material Data Sheet on the chemical spilled. 8. NO ONE IS PERMITTED IN THE AREA IF THEY ARE NOT TRAINED PROPERLY AND EQUIPPED FOR CHEMICAL SPILLS.
FIRE Response to Fire 1. Contact the main administrative office and sound the alarm when you discover a fire. Caller to identify the fire, the size and the location. 2. Announce the evacuation over the public announcement system using emergency COLOR CODE and identifying location. COLOR CODE: ___________________. 3. Teachers/staff to evacuate the building bringing the grade book and attendance log. Close door after leaving the room. Go to the designated area outside the building. 4. Fire team goes to the designated areas to assist with evacuation and avoid re-entering where the fire is located. 5. Administrative office contacts the fire department. Fire Response Personnel: Go to designated areas outside the building. Account for all students/staff. Provide directions to the emergency services/fire.
GAS LEAKS Response to Gas Leaks 1. Report unusual odors, suspicious smells or gas leaks to main office. 2. Assess the condition and identify where the gas leak is coming from if possible. 3. Contact the local gas company and the local fire department. (9-1-1) 4. If gas leaks are outside the building coming from another off-site location, follow the emergency responders instruction, which may be to stay in the building until notified for further instructions. Assess the situation before evacuating students from the building. 5. If leaks are inside the school/building, gas leaks may occur in the science lab, cafeteria or other areas where propane tanks/piping are located on the campus. Evacuate students and staff away from the immediate area and stay far enough away from the potential explosion area. Avoid evacuating into the area where the gas may be leaking. 6. When entering a room that smells like gas, DO NOT TURN ON LIGHT SWITCH or any other ignition source if room is dark. Use a flashlight and avoid creating a spark until the situation is assessed/evaluated. 7. Secure the area from unauthorized entry or re-entry. 8. Turn off the main gas value. Location ___________.
MISSING PERSON Response to Kidnapping/Abduction or Missing 1. Notify the main office immediately with last known location of the person and what was the last time the person was seen. Describe what the person was wearing. 2. Assigned staff should be notified to go to each pre-determined exits of the building immediately. 3. Assign staff to check the playground, gym, bathrooms, first aid station, auditorium and front office locations. Report back to the main office coordinator. 4. Contact the local police department. Call 9-1-1 if person cannot be located. 5. Pull the school yearbook to locate picture of the person. 6. Keep all students in classrooms. 7. Interview friends if known. Interviews should be conducted in a secure location away from other students. Each person should be interviewed separately. 8. Reassure students and keep the situation calm/orderly.
MEDIA EMERGENCY Response to Media Emergency 1. Incident occurred and the media shows up on site. (Print, Radio, Television) 2. Only the principal or his/her designee shall speak to the media for an interview. 3. Assign someone to secure the media to the predetermined location. The location is: __________________. 4. Do not volunteer information and/or answer any question that you do not know. THERE IS NOT REQUIREMENT TO TALK WITH THE MEDIA. 5. Do not allow the media to roam through the school alone or unattended. 6. Principal should contact ___________ to request direction as to the interview and/or letting the media on campus.
SEVERE WEATHER Response to Severe Weather Lightning: 1. In lightning conditions, note the flash and bang situation. When a flash of light occurs count one thousand, one thousand two, one thousand three, etc. until you see/hear the bang. 2. The number of seconds of the flash-bang determines the miles away from the location. Anything less than 8 miles, all outside activities should be temporarily suspended. Students should begin to move inside until the situation is cleared. 3. The main office should be contacted. Contact the local weather stations to determine lightning patterns in the area. Phone: _______________. Tornados: Watch: Conditions are favorable for formation of tornados: 1. Limit student’s movement outside the permanent structures. 2. Begin moving students out of portable classrooms. 3. Keep constant account of all students assigned to your class and be prepared to move immediately to protection procedures. Warning: Tornados have been sighted in the watch area: 1. 2. 3. 4. Account for all students. All portable classrooms shall be evacuated to a permanent structure. Suspend all playground and outside activities. Limit student movement.
Protection Procedures: 1. Students drop and cover. Move to the closest load-bearing walls. Closets, fully enclosed rooms (e.g. stairwells, mechanical rooms, restrooms) may be the most solid structure. 2. Student should crawl under desk or heavy furniture. 3. Cover head with hands.
SHOOTING Response to Shooting on Campus 1. When shots are heard, have all students immediately drop to the floor. 2. Contact main administration immediately with direction of shots heard. 3. Main office contact local police at 9-1-1. 4. Access situations and act accordingly. Keep students calm and quiet. 5. If LOCK DOWN CODE _________ is called, lock the classroom door and close shades, blinds and windows. Reassure students to keep calm until all clear signal. 6. Do not attempt to take away gun from intruder or to apprehend intruder. Safety of the students and you are the main priority. Keep down and quiet. Listen for instructions or directions. 7. Only evacuate the building when it is safe to do so or the local police agency has instructed you to.
STRANGERS/INTRUDERS Response to Stranger or Intruder on Campus 1. Check all strangers on campus. Ask for visitor pass or direct them to the main office to sign in for a visitor pass. 2. Notify main office and on-site security. 3. Observe stranger or intruder from a distance until assistance arrives especially if intruder acts irrational or strange. 4. Be prepared for lock down code. 5. Stranger or intruders may come in all physical sizes, different clothing, uniformed, etc. Visitor passes must be displayed.
FIGHTING Response to Fighting 1. Separate persons fighting using verbal commands. Request for assistance from other faculty/staff. Assistance faculty should be directed to contact main office. 2. Only attempt to separate offenders when there are sufficient staff/faculty present. EXCEPTION: IF A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION EXISTS. 3. Secure area by dispersing non-involved students to the classroom. Keep the situation calm. 4. Watch carefully for flair up of the situation - so keep offenders away from each other. Attempt to keep each of them from “eye to eye” contact of the other. 5. Complete an incident report with local Police Department.
