1. News Home - Introduction
The eStoic News feed tab is there to receive live RSS, (Real Simple Syndication), news feeds from your favorite news sources. You can new live feeds as you wish, but only add them if you are sure as it takes a user with eStoic Office Server privileges to remove a news feed once added. The initial News home page is illustrated below:
There are three default news categories, Starred, UK News and World News. Starred is by default empty, UK News has by default the live feed from the BBC and World news has a live feed From Google News, as illustrated below:
When either category is clicked the home page changes to reflect the current live news feed. In the illustration below the BBC news feed has been clicked:
By clicking any one of the active news feed links that have now appeared will open that news story in a new browser window. At this point you are viewing the news stories originating site.
2. Adding a News Category
To add new News categories for the ease of storage and retrieval of your live news feeds you need to be a user with eStoic Office Server privileges. You will need to change the News Feed Pick List in the Settings section as illustrated below:
This will take you to the Admin settings page, you want the Edit News Feed Pick List as below:
Clicking this link will bring up the following page:
Again clicking the ‘Edit’ link will bring up the following page:
We shall add a Technical category for this user guide, click save, as illustrated below:
This new category now appears on the News Home page tab ready to have new live feeds added to it:
3. Adding a News RSS Feed
Using either the existing categories or new categories that you have defined as per the above, you are now ready to add more news feeds. For this user guide we will add a news feed from UK technical news web site www.theregister.co.uk. Looking at their site we see that they run a live feed service because they have an RSS button on their pages:
By clicking this button we are taken to their page that lists the live feeds they have available:
We will choose the indicated link, but you could use any of them.
Now we need to go back to the News Home page tab and click the News Feed Add+ button as illustrated below:
This opens up the ‘Pop Up’ illustrated below:
We copy and paste in the relevant URL choose our category and in this instance we do not want to set it as starred – If we did not want to create a new category, but it did not fit an existing category then we could set it as starred. Remember to click the Add button when you are ready:
The News home page tab will now refresh itself.
When you click on the Technical section now, you will see the link for The Register:
Which when clicked brings up the links for the live news feeds from that site, as illustrated below:
4. Viewing a News Feed
To view a news feed story you need to click the news category listing that interest you, in this instance we are interested in the ‘World News’ category:
We can see that we have Google news listed in that category, by clicking that link it will bring up the latest Google news headlines as illustrated below:
By clicking any of the links a new browser window will open and you will be taken to that sites news story. You can get more news headlines, from that same site by clicking on the ‘more’ link as indicated above. This will open up a new browser window to that site with more news choices for you. When you have finished reading the story that interests you just close that browser window.
