OBJECTIVES
Needs of Society and Working Life

International Business & Marketing Logistics (IBML) educates specialists and experts to a
variety of jobs in international business. The working life is facing dramatic changes:
organisations are becoming leaner, the challenges of successful process management, e-
Business, and international human resources affecting all parts of the organisation. Also
co-operation and learning on system, group and individual levels will be the key
characteristics of successful business firms in the near future.
Networks of organisations and people are more important than ever. The business
environment is changing as the European Union is enlarging its boundaries. Competition
will grow further and the core competitiveness of companies has to be clearly distinctive
for the customers.

International Business & Marketing Logistics (IBML) is a degree programme designed to
meet this future world. The students will gain experience in studying or working abroad
which gives them a competitive edge in the job market.
The tuition language is English and students have an opportunity to receive a double-
degree (tradenomi and BBA and BA in International Business) when studying successfully
at least one year in some of the partner schools abroad.

The IBML will educate future specialists for internationally operating business firms in
industry, service sectors such as wholesale, transportation, (tele)-communication, or other
export/import-related fields. They will be able to take care of the tasks involved in the
beginning and in the ending operations of the supply chain with a special regard to the
customer service. They will be able to start a business of their own and offer expert
services on their own behalf.

The students will become familiar with communication in an international surrounding. The
working life’s requirement of capability to work in international teams and being able to
deal with cultural differences will be met by the IBML students.


General Skills and Professional Specialization

The general objectives of the degree programmes at Satakunta Polytechnic include
developing not only the student’s skills in his/her field of specialisation, but also those
skills, which he will need in the future society.

The IBML degree programme educates the students by providing them with extensive and
balanced professional skills in the field of marketing and logistics, communication skills
and general business skills.
The students will not only master the objectives, methods, tools and ethics of their
professional field, but also recognize its current development trends. In addition the
students will understand the need of life-long learning and have ability to learn more.

The students learn comprehensive business skills that provide them with the
understanding of company functions and processes of corporations, entrepreneur skills
and thinking, innovation process, working in teams and network structures, and creation
and implementation of business concepts.

Communication skills consisting of presentation skills, cultural skills, international
experience and language skills will provide the students with reasonable competence to
work abroad, and enables them feel at home in the global business environment.

Professional specialization will be in the field of marketing and logistics. The students
understand the importance of customer orientation. They will also master the supply chain
management from raw materials to end customers. They understand the
interdependencies of different functions and supporting processes and how added value is
produced in the core process to customer.

The IBML degree programme trains experts who will be able to operate in international
business environment in the roles such as purchaser, marketing assistant/manager, sales
assistant/manager,    transport    or   logistics   assistant/    manager,      warehouse
assistant/manager, forwarder, or other administrative roles in the fields of marketing and
logistics.

The students practice and deepen their skills through work placements which take place in
two phases. The two work placements give the student altogether 20 credits. They last
three months each, and placement in international business environment is preferred.
The first work placement takes place first after the second year and the second after the
third year. Additionally the second work placement is guided by the supervisor both from
the school and the employer.

The third year the students have an opportunity to spend a half or a whole year in student
exchange either in some of our partner schools in Europe or in other higher educational
institutes around the world.
During the third year the students have to gain at least 32 credits level three professional
studies that contain at least 8 credits in marketing, 6 credits in logistics, 5 credits in
financial management and 3 credits in human resources management.
The course in Academic Writing (1 credit) or a matching course studied in abroad is
obligatory, and it cannot be compensated by any advanced course in a different area of
English.

The bachelor’s thesis is to be done in the final year of IBML degree programme. Thesis
will give the student 10 credits. Work placement may also give opportunity for student to
do their bachelor’s thesis for the enterprise in question.

The Learning Environment in IBML

In the IBML programme is applied Problem- Based Learning (PBL) environment.
The students are activated through an interactive problem-solving process in teams. The
systematic process contains i.e. analysing problems from real working life, independent
search of knowledge, and teaching other group members, and finally presenting and
evaluating the new knowledge together with other group members.
From the second year and onwards PBL is combined with real-life enterprise projects that
serve real needs of the enterprises. Combination of PBL and Project Learning

Environment provides a very efficient and inspiring way for the students to combine theory
and practice. Additionally projects provide an opportunity for students to become familiar
with the local enterprises, their operations, products and services. The students also learn
to understand the resources and environment the small and medium- sized enterprises are
operating with.

Objectives:
The student gets a general picture of labour market functions, its actors and the work
related laws and regulations. She/he students identifies different types of organizations
and understands the logic in different organizational structures. The student understands
the organizational behaviour in all levels in relation to management and leadership. She/he
students is also able to recognize the common forces and counter-forces in relation to
organizational changes.
The student develops own learning skills and is able to utilize the multifaceted information
sources and is able to analyse and choose critically the quality of the information for own
purposes. The student becomes familiar with the information systems of Satakunta
Polytechnic.
To give the students opportunities to improve their proficiency in communication in English
both in everyday life and in studying, especially the PBL learning environment.
The aim is to introduce the student to computer operating system and network
environment, and to provide the basic skills in its use. The students will learn how to create
minutes and memos, and writing reports and papers by using the basic word processing
and presentation software.

Contents:
Individual, group and system level behaviour, factors beyond the individual behaviour,
team work, basics in management and leadership, organizational structures, different
types of organizations, factors causing organizational changes, learning organizations,
knowledge management, motivation and its theories, communication, working-life related
regulations, labour market and its actors, healthy work, and job design.
Study skills, information search, library resources. Critical evaluation of information
different information sources.
Fundamentals of communication, aural, oral, written and reading skills as well as non-
verbal communication; style and structure; study skills and reporting skills. Small talk,
note-taking skills, use of dictionaries, PBL- memos, reports and papers, and their
structures.
Basics of microcomputer hardware, software, word processing and an operating system

Objectives:
The student becomes familiar with the business environment: the markets, the actors and
all essential interest groups, as well as the ecological aspect of it. The student
understands the principles of economics on the enterprise level and the society level.
The student understands customer behaviour and the role of marketing in business and
general legal aspects of marketing.
She/he gets a general picture of the legal system in Finland. The student is able to
differentiate jurisdictional actors in business and knows the main principles of legal acts
regulating common business activities, especially contract law.
The student understands the customer as the central part of the company’s operations and
long-term profitability.
The student learns how to prepare and execute an oral presentation and understands the
dimensions of efficient communication and the meaning language.
The aim is to introduce the student to a simple model of web-page architecture. The
students will learn how to use common computer peripherals like scanner and digital
camera, and how to transfer files between the peripheral and the computer.

Basic principles of business operations, characteristics of various markets, concepts of
supply and demand.
Finnish legal system and hierarchy of laws and regulations, principles of basic legal

Objectives:
The student understands the role of products as a means of satisfying customer needs.
She/he understands the mechanism of pricing and the customer as central part of
company’s operations and long term profitability development. Importance of creating
additional value by integrating the customer into enterprise processes.
The student becomes familiar with the international trade and contract law. The student
will understand the principles and practices of personal and enterprise taxation, goals and
central terms of taxation, income taxation system, enterprises as tax payers.
The student gets familiar with the different means and roles of business negotiations. The
student practices and develops personal negotiation techniques and formal meeting
procedures.
The student will learn how to create spreadsheet models and to use special features of a
spreadsheet program. The student will learn the basic functions of a database program.
The student will have mathematical skills to solve problems in relation to business life and
skills necessary for the quantitative methods and other numerate modules. The student
has a basic understanding of financial elements in managerial decision-making.

Contents:
Strategic thinking, marketing communication, customer oriented strategy, Basics of
logistics and logistics management. Basics of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
system.
Commercial applications by using percentage calculation , interest - and compound
interest calculation and foreign currencies. Value Added Tax (VAT), introduction into
financial mathematics.
Negotiations, and its practices and language, formal meetings, minutes. Creation and use
of spreadsheet program models, to update them, functions, macros and charts by using
Microsoft Excel.

The student understands the nature of services and knows the elements of service quality.
The student is able to develop a marketing strategy and formulate a marketing mix for a
service organisation. The student knows how to analyse and improve quality and
productivity in a service organisation.
Understand the role of product as a mean of satisfying customer need, and how better
product and solutions can be created for the future needs.
The student understands how accounting data arises and how the books of account are
entered up to reflect the transactions in a business. She/he understands how to prepare
final accounts and how to analyze them. The student gets an introduction to Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) system.
The student gets familiar with the company presentations, product demonstrations and
hosting visitors in face-to-face communication.
The student learns how to create a database and to plan a project with computer aided
project management tool.

marketing mix in a service organisation. Productivity and quality of service organizations.
Product creation process, logistics services, transportation management, inventories,
value chain.
Sources of financial information, book-keeping to record transactions, preparation of final
accounts, preparation of internal cash flow statements, distinction between profit and cash-
flow, introduction to ERP system.

Objectives:
The student becomes familiar with all the activities related to starting up a business.
She/he is able to develop a business plan and the necessary strategic analysis. The
student is able to use cost accounting techniques in decision making.
The student understands the processes of marketing research and is able to plan and
implement a quantitative research project.
Cost accounting techniques are identified and understood to aid decision making in a
business organization. The student familiarizes with the basics of written business
communication.
The student can create a web-page on the Internet. She/he knows HTML-language and
can use different structures when creating an internet page. The student can plan and
create a web-site by using Ms FrontPage.
The phrases and structures of business Swedish will become in active use by the student,
both orally and in writing. The following course is offered to international students as a
substitution for the obligatory Swedish course for students with Finnish basic education.

research: research process, research problem formulation, data collection and analysis.

Objectives:
The student is able to analyse international markets, she/he knows the modes of
international operations and is able to choose the best market entry strategy for a

given topics related to international trade. The student learns to approach different cultures
professionally within the frames of business.
The student learns to apply her/his theoretical knowledge in a company project.

International trade theory, risks and benefits of going international, practical questions in

Objectives:
Aim of the Accounting in ERP module is to get the student to understand how financial and
management accounting is done once the enterprise has implemented ERP. ERP
provides remarkable toolbox for all levels of management. Students also learn how to
make use of information collected and presented by ERP in different management roles.
The student is familiarized with the Financial Statements of an Enterprise and the most
common business ratios that can be derived from it. The student learns to analyze how an
enterprise may get into liquidity crisis through payment delays.
The student is able to evaluate of the liquidity crisis with the help of business ratios derived
from the annual financial statements, and evaluate the risk of bankruptcy of the enterprise.
At the end of the course the student has an understanding of the business ratios which can
be used to identify the liquidity crisis and the risk of bankruptcy.
The student gets a theoretical basis for writing advanced academic papers and is given
the opportunity to practice and develop these skills.

calculated from Financial Statements, Using computer aided enterprise analysis program to
calculate key figures in Financial Statements, analyzing and utilizing the main key figures in
estimation of liquidity crisis, The meaning of delayed payments for the enterprise in liquidity

The student deepens the knowledge in outbound logistics. He/she understands the
importance of logistics in forming profitability, service level and competitive edge.
The students understand the importance of marketing communication in the different types
of marketing organizations. The students is able to independently plan and realize the
tasks connected to the different parts of marketing communication.

Contents:
Lord software for planning and calculating the different aspect in logistics strategy,
analyzing the influence of parameters, project work. Direct selling, customer service,
advertisement, public relations, services’ marketing, planning a marketing campaign.

existing ones. They learn how to use customer relationship management to produce high
customer equity by creating strong customer bonds with the help of customer tailored

utilizes the potential of methods and techniques to integrate Marketing and Logistics.
She/he will also understand the nature of all recent market changes and how marketing
Logistics can be used in order to achieve a cost or value competitive advantage.
The student understands the process of planning and control of the physical movement of
goods, and the associated information flow, from manufacturer to end user. She/he
understands the importance of Distribution Management for the successful implementation
of a Logistics strategy.

Objectives:
The student is familiarized with stock and security trade. The student is introduced to
determination of security value, investment strategies of securities. Additionally the student
is familiarized with the investment funds. At the end of the course the student is able to
construct an investment portfolio for individual and enterprise purposes. The student is able
to estimate the risks and profitability of the investment portfolio.

Students understand how ecological and social pressures affect marketing management on
both strategic and operational level. They see green issues as a vital factor in decision
making.

Contents:
Stock portfolio, financing market; stock market, investment funds, profitability and risks of
investment, security value determination, derivatives, security related key figures.
Principles of environmental marketing. Strategic green marketing; green consumer
behavior, legislation and marketing strategy. Operational green marketing;
development of green products, marketing communication, distribution systems,
packages and pricing policies.

The student understands the importance of human resources management for the

The student understand the different processes forming a business – strategic decision
making, production planning, quality control and demand & supply processes. The student
knows the importance of process modeling and communication between the processes.

HR- policy and strategies, planning and recruitment, training and development, motivation
and reward systems, maintenance and employee influence opportunities. Organizational
culture, leadership, managing diversity, cultural differences in organizations and
management, ERP.
Strategic operations management, managing resources, balancing capacity, process
design & work measurement, quality management, information technology as tool for
effective communication along the value chain.

Objectives:
The student is familiar with the processes and problems of the international marketing. They
are able to design internationalization plans for a small and medium-sized enterprises.
The course provides concepts, strategies and solutions of environmental problems,
especially problems of waste avoidance and utilization in logistics considering a system
oriented viewing.


Contents:
Strategies and tactics in the international marketing, starting and developing international
operations on SME’s, case extensions, written group assignments.
Interrelations between ecology and logistics, recycling adequate selection of material and
construction, ecological packaging concepts and strategies, economical resource usage,
strategies of avoidance, substitution of environmental points of loading packaging
solutions, concepts of the distribution, route planning regarding environmental point of
views, logistical concepts of the waste industry.

Objectives:
The student becomes familiar with the rules and requirements of working life. The student
gets oriented to business life by working as an assistant in marketing, logistics,
international trade or other related business functions. It is most preferable that this work
placement takes place in an organisation with international activity. The student learns to
take responsibility for a team membership or an independent task area. Duration of the
work placement is 3 months (40 working hours / week).

IBR3502 Practical training II            10 cr

Objectives:
The student strengthens his/ her professional skills in a team project assigned by an
internationally active business firm. The student gets a chance to carry out independently/
under supervision rather demanding tasks in marketing, logistics, and/or international
trade. It is most preferable that this work placement takes place in an organisation with
international activity.
Along with the general objectives for the Work Placement set by the school, the student
sets also objectives of his/her own in relation to personal professional development.
The Work Placement is guided by the supervisor from the school and the employer. The
Work Placement III is to be done first after 2nd year. Duration of the Work Placement is 3
months (40 working hours / week).


BACHELOR’S THESIS 10 cr

IBR3600 Bachelor’s thesis                10 cr

Objectives: The bachelor’s thesis is a project, which combines the theoretical knowledge
of the student and the practice of business into a useful outcome, thus serving the needs
of the business community. Ideally, the bachelor’s thesis serves as a flexible transfer from
student perspective to that of professionals in international business and marketing
logistics. The maturity test is taken after approved bachelor’s thesis.
