     A Business Just Like Any Other
     What is the purpose of starting a business? Well people have lots of reasons for starting
     business, but if making a profit isn’t one of them, they may as well not bother.

     Most businesses spend more money than they make, and that’s usually why they go belly
     up, or the owner ends up putting it in the “too hard” basket and walking away.

     So why should network marketing be any different?

     The common belief is that network marketing is a business that appreciates in value over
     time. In other words, if I have a group of 100 to 1,000 people under me buying the product
     and recruiting more, I’d be getting richer and richer! After all, that’s how network marketing
     is sold!

     However this potential pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is totally irrelevant for the
     newcomer. What IS relevant is whether you can even SURVIVE the first 6 months to 2
     years!

     Most network marketers in a new industry typically go through a 6 months trial-and-error
     period where there is little or no income, so therefore it is crucial to ensure that during those
     6 training/building months, you manage your cash wisely so you can learn and make money
     at the same time.

     Mainstream businesses fail at a rate of about 95% within 5 years. That’s bad enough, but
     network marketing is even tougher. 98% of network marketers fail from the start, while most
     of the rest struggle to make profit even if they do survive. The key to survival is CASH
     FLOW. So your focus must be on activities that bring in cash NOW.

     In other words, it can be summed up in this equation:

     I know this is the opposite of what your company or upline may have told you, but keep in
     mind they may not be very interested in the sustainability of your business (as I explained
     previously).

     Sometimes companies try to overcome this problem of cashflow, and still have you focus on
     recruiting instead of product sales, by insisting on a compulsory purchase level by each
     recruit.

     If the product is price-competitive for its target market, (and the company is willing to refund
     100% if products remain unsold) then this might not be so bad. But if your company is
     literally forcing recruits to purchase, and there is no proven consumer market, then they are
     just setting you up to lose money. In addition, by placing this financial burden on
     newcomers, they make it tougher for you to recruit.

     It’s so common to hear of garages full of boxes of unsold network marketing products,
     gathering dust because they can’t even be GIVEN AWAY!

     The typical story in network marketing is that people spend more money than they make
     trying to recruit and sell. This is why 3 months is the typical quit time, because they’ve
     literally run out of cash and can’t even afford to keep trying. But by breaking even as fast as
     possible, it gives tremendous mental strength to the distributor and he or she is less likely to
     drop out.

     If you can prove to yourself that you know how to make money, from that point you know
     you can make more!

     But first we must understand the mindset which is the most important starting point in
     getting by the first 3 months.

     The Mindset of a Business Builder –
     Going Mainstream
     (Don’t proceed any further in this book until you ingrain these into your brain!)

        •   It takes TIME to build a successful business. If you make ANY money in the first few
            months (even if it is just a few dollars) it is PERFECTLY NORMAL.

        •   It takes KNOWLEDGE to build a successful business. Forget stuff like “The Secret”
            – all the belief in the world isn’t going to cut it if you don’t know and understand the
            basics of business operation and management, including marketing. You must
            commit to being a lifelong LEARNER, just like other successful business people the
            world over.

        •   It is MY BUSINESS. Not my upline’s business or my downline’s business.
            Everything depends on ME putting in the effort to succeed.

        •   Invest in TOOLS that brings in revenue (lead generators, viral e-books, generic
            information, etc). Don’t buy books and tapes just for the sake of buying them, and
            NEVER buy your leads (if you find a decent paid source, let me know, because so
            far every single one I’ve seen is worthless).

        •   Don’t get in debt over network marketing. There is a 98% chance that you will not be
            able to repay it and could severely harm those you borrow from. Remember that
            cash flow from the start is your focus.

        •   Don’t blow ANY money on advertising that isn’t proven to generate cash flow. Direct
            response advertising is one of the most effective ways. And there are so many
            FREE ways to promote your business that you’d be crazy to spend money you don’t
            have.

        •   A smart businessman doesn’t spread himself out too much. Build the LOCAL market
            first. Never venture outstation unless you have a steady income. If you can’t even

            take care of yourself, how can you take care of your downline far away from you?
            You want to make sure that you have a failsafe recipe to pass on to your downline
            because recruiting people without that is just burning them, and burning your
            precious time. The same people you burn now could be your star performers later if
            you only do this the right way.

        •   Focus on solving other people’s problems. The business isn’t about you, it’s about
            your customers. If you keep your focus on them and find the point at which your
            product and their most pressing needs meet, you are most likely onto a winner.

        •   Enjoying the journey! People who love their job always outperform those who do it
            grudgingly. If your prospect sees you doing your business so grudgingly, will they
            join you? This doesn’t mean you become some over-hyped “Mr or Mrs Positive”, it
            just means that you’re comfortably enthusiastic about your product, and you present
            as a healthy, energetic person. Smile!

     Depending on the network marketing company, do you see how typical it is for an average
     business builder to spend somewhere between $1,000 to $16,000 as a STARTING
     INVESTMENT?

     Your Breakeven Point

     If you’re on 20% commission, you need to sell between $5,000 and $80,000 worth of
     product just to break even! How many product units would you have to shift to do that, and
     how many hours would that take you?

     Do you see that it’s reasonable that you and your downline understand that you need to
     earn commissions of at least this much in order to avoid losing money?

     You may be thinking, well, I don’t have to cover all this in sales because I’ll get commissions
     from everyone beneath me. The problem with this false logic is that if you can’t make
     enough sales to more than cover this, there is no way they can!

     Working Out What You Need to Sell in Order to Make More

     If you wanted to replace your income from your current job, you’d have to sell between
     $178,005 and $253,055 (USA) or $292,240 and $372,240 (Australia). That would cover
     your expenses and make up for your lost earnings.

     But what if you just wanted to make a couple of hundred dollars extra each week? And
     maybe most of the people in your downline will be happy to just do that as well.

     Well in that case you’d have to sell $52,000 worth of product over and above your
     breakeven point. And so would they.

     You might be wondering why I’m not calculating 2nd level (or more) commissions into these
     equations. It’s because

        a) They are a complete unknown and therefore cannot be factored (and in fact 98% of
           your downline will fail anyway unless you can teach them the methods explained
           here)

        b) If you can’t sell even this, then there’s no way you can teach your downline to
           perform anyway. You have to proceed to master your business as if there were no
           downline.


     Shortly I’ll be showing you how to increase your sales so that you can make more
     commissions, and show your team how to make more commissions.

     Downline: An Asset or Liability?
     What is the income you are expecting from your business? Do you know that you have to
     invest time and money in your downlines? Yes, it is true that you make money when your
     downline joins you or makes a sale, but most of the time, to build a long term business; you
     have to invest heavily in their education.

     Network Marketing is a business of duplication and although many people will pay the price
     to build their network, you must be very selective about whom you spend your time with.
     You can’t possibly be everything to everyone and you must select who will be the people
     that you are going places with!

     I wrote really extensively about how to choose (and win over) your downline in my previous
     book “Why 98% of MLM Downlines Fail” and I urge you to go to
     www.mlmprofessionals.biz and grab your free copy. You don’t even need to leave an email
     address, just go get it!

     It makes sense to be selective because the time you spend with one unsuitable person
     means a loss of time that could have been spent developing somebody already on your
     team, recruiting a star, or working on your marketing. Your TIME is valuable and you must
     guard it closely. Furthermore, if you have to drive out of your house to see them or
     accompany them to paid training and development sessions, you are losing $$$ in addition
     to time.

     Are you prepared to pay the price for ‘this guy’?

     Most of the time people quit network marketing not because they can’t recruit, but because
     they spend too much time with a recruit thinking they can change someone, or rescue
     someone, or convince someone. If you’re recruiting the right way, they’ll be approaching
     YOU, and you’ll be choosing selectively whom to accept.

     The key point to remember is this:

     If you are doing 99% of the work in your network while the rest is doing 1%: START
     FINDING NEW DOWNLINES, They will spend less of your money (and free up your
     time to make more).

     MLM is a business for self-starters, and if they are not self-starters FROM THE
     START, when they’re keen and excited, they certainly aren’t going to be self-starters
     at all!

     I’m not being critical of these people – the world needs people of all kinds. It’s just that
     they’re totally unsuited for business, including the network marketing business.

     In the next few chapters, I will show you how by reducing or eliminating some of the
     expenses and overheads of network marketing, you and all your downlines can save time
     and money (so your downlines will not quit easily due to lack of cash flow and your business
     will survive better in the earlier stages).

     Eliminating the Burden
     Here is a step by step instruction in ways you can tackle the expenditure above.

     Joining fee and auto-ship:

     Instead of going out to start looking for people to join your opportunity, one of the fastest
     ways to ensure cash flow is to LIQUIDATE your products!

     See that stash of products lying around your house? (Your health supplements, skin care or
     water filters, etc.) A lot of people leave their stocks lying around the house while going on a
     recruitment spree forgetting that once you sell off all your stocks, you will break even on
     your investment!

     If you are wondering whether to keep those products so you can try them yourself, don’t
     worry. There is more where that came from. If you work hard to eliminate your investment
     costs, you can always purchase more products from the company later on and those
     products will most likely contribute to your sales volume as well.

     Now the big mistake here is that many people start off trying to give products to family and
     friends to try, hoping that they’ll get all excited and start spreading the “good news”. Or
     worse still, they start pressuring their family and friends to buy.

     I know a lot of companies will tell you to do this, but they don’t care about your sustainability
     as a business. They know from experience that they can get people to pressure friends and
     family for a while, and then that dries up and the recruit fails. They don’t care because their
     focus is on recruiting fresh people to place pressure on their friends and family.

     Not only is it incredibly unethical to use your family and friends in this way, but it fools you
     into thinking you can move product when you don’t even have a consumer market. If you
     can’t sell this product to genuine consumers who will keep buying from you, you’d better find
     out immediately rather than months later when you’re deep in debt.

     Your friends and family can be very useful to you, but not in the way that you might have
     been led to believe by your company.

     Every company claims there is a consumer market for their product, but guess who’s taking
     the risk to discover if that’s true, or true in your area? YOU! (Unless of course they have
     audited sales figures to prove there is market demand.)

     When would you rather find out whether you can identify and sell to a market? Now? Or
     finally having to admit it to yourself after 12 months of hard slog and nothing but debt to
     show for it?

     If you’re going to fail, fail fast and clean, learn from it and move on.

     If you’re on auto-ship then the need to sell is the most pressing need you have, and you
     need to find a market. NOW.

     This is why you don’t get into auto-ship until you’ve established your market (there’ll be
     more about establishing and building a market later in this book). Again, there’s an obvious
     exception to this: if the product is one you’d use anyway, and it’s priced competitively with
     what it’s replacing, of course you must go for it!

     Training Materials

     If you want to be successful in network marketing, you must invest in yourself. This means
     investing in increasing your business knowledge and skills, and spending money only on
     things that lead to cash flow.

     Phone Bills

     As soon as your network begins to grow, you must consider switching to a phone plan that
     provides low-cost or unlimited access to all sub-lines. This is a great way to save on phone
     bills when calling your downline. Some telephone companies offer unique phone plans that
     give you a referral fee or even an overriding percentage over your referee’s or your
     network’s bill.

     Other ways to cut down on phone bills is to go online to coordinate team meetings over the
     internet. Tools like Skype or VoIP are useful to do long distance opportunity meetings as
     well as counseling/mentoring sessions with your upline.


     Petrol

     If you find yourself burning too much petrol when prospecting, then you must consider
     QUALIFYING your leads more carefully. Not everyone who gets into your group will be a
     ‘CLASS A’ networker. It is wise to focus on recruiting people who have qualities to succeed
     in any business. Opportunities do not make someone rich; hard work and persistence does.

     Where possible get potential recruits to come to you, rather than driving to them. This is far
     more efficient!

     If you are prospecting someone who is indecisive, lazy and complains constantly, it is better
     to keep him or her on the back burner and focus on other people (follow up with them in
     your spare time). You don’t want to find yourself driving miles just to talk to someone and
     after two hours (or a few months later) you find out that they are not interested or they are
     not someone you want in your team.

     A very good way to qualify what type of prospect you are dealing with if to ask him or her
     questions about their self-development. If you find that they have no energy in their words,
     or are not doing anything to improve themselves then you can very well save lots of time
     and petrol.

     In addition, as early as possible in your prospecting of any individual, ask them to do a
     “qualifying task”. Don’t make it something ridiculous like “give me the contact details of 10
     friends” or “see if you can sell 10 bottles of this to your friends”! What you could do is give
     them a short survey sheet and some samples, and ask them to give them out to people and
     do a follow-up survey with each of them. Agree on a deadline and find out if you’ve got a
     self-starter or an excuse-maker.

     One of the things I ask potential business builders to do for me is to fill out a “Business
     Leader Assignment”. This little assignment gives me the information I need to assess
     whether I want to support this person, as well as letting them know the kinds of resources
     that will be at their disposal should they decide the opportunity excites them.

     Another good idea is to ask them to write out a testimonial for the product and email it to
     you. If you have to ask twice, most likely they are not your recruit.

     Leads for Recruitment

     You don’t have to spend a fortune on leads. Here are some suggestions on how to get
     leads for free.




        •   Firstly don’t pay for leads. That’s like paying for a blind date. If you want people
            who are going to work well with YOU and have the best chance of succeeding, they
            need to have been attracted to YOU personally.

        •   Attend highly motivational seminars (e.g. Anthony Robbins). The people that you
            tend to meet at these events are likely to be more like you, already a lot more
            motivated and ambitious than most of the population. Any number of these people
            could be your business colleagues, could be interested in your blog, might like to try
            your product, and might even like to join you on your team. (Just don’t arrogantly
            assume that they are your captive audience, or that they’d have to be crazy to reject
            your offer. That attitude is unprofessional, and turns people right off!)

        •   Other network marketing companies. Join their opportunity talks or rallies. You will
            get to know many like minded people here and there and they will be more than
            happy to be your friend because they want to get you into their opportunity. You can
            sort and filter which are the people you want in your network later on. If your
            convincing power is very good, you might bring over an entire network of distributors
            over.

            The best way to approach this is from a desire to peer-network and learn from each
            other. After all, you may find that another opportunity is better suited to you than
            your current company.

     Front-End: Consistent Stream of Income
     A lot of network marketers make a very big mistake in their business. They don’t develop
     multiple streams of income and they rely only on making money through one source which
     is the company they are in. What do I mean?

     Let’s say I am with XYZ Company. I feel that XYZ Company has the best reputation in the
     world, the best product, the best marketing plan, has helped millions of people in the world
     with the product and opportunity (you get the idea). Because I am so engrossed with my
     company, I refuse to engage other streams of income like buying or endorsing the other
     products of other companies. Some even go as far as to learn only within their own network
     marketing community.

     This leaves a LOT OF MONEY ON THE TABLE.

     Let me emphasize once again. Network Marketing is a BUSINESS. You must be receptive
     to new ideas and constantly learn (even from other network marketing companies!)

     As a business person, you must be savvy enough to adapt to situations and do
     WHATEVER IT TAKES (of course as long as it is ethical and professional) to get the job
     done.

     This means that your thinking must be flexible enough to come out with ideas that
     accomplish the following steps:

     Literally, you need to have a data base of consumers and potential consumers for your
     product/s.

     Remember that your best recruits will be customers who love the product, who have an
     intense interest the particular problem/s the product is designed to solve, and who show
     themselves to be self-starters.

     If you are communicating with your data base as you should be, consistently, persistently,
     and personally, you will sell product and you will recruit downlines.

     Here are some great ideas which anyone can follow, especially if they get our free help to
     do so!


        •   First here’s a “don’t”. If your product is skin care, don’t bother offering free facials.
            People know the game and they don’t like it. Keep the game clean by maybe
            offering inexpensive facials and rather than asking people to buy, have your
            products clearly displayed with price tags. People feel better about this type of
            transaction, and are more likely to buy. When they do, just say something like “Yes,
            I KNEW you’d feel the difference” with a big smile, and take their order.

        •   Develop a simple web site which at least has a blog on it that people (potential
            consumers) can sign up to. Make the topic one which is of burning interest to your
            target market so that not only will they interact with you, but they’ll tell their friends
            and family and encourage them to join as well. As people come to know and like
            you, and trust you as an expert in this area, they’ll be very comfortable about acting

            There are just so many scams and scammers out there that this is the way
            marketing has to be done now. You’ve got to first prove yourself as an honest and
            valuable provider of a “solution” before asking anyone to hand over a cent. And
            that’s a good thing.

            When it comes to claiming that you can help people make money, you actually have
            to demonstrate that for free first. Only when people discover that they can make $$$
            out of your advice, will they start to pay for it, with absolute confidence that they will
            recoup it fast and come out ahead.

            This is the “pull” method of selling versus the “push” method of selling, and believe
            me it is far more effective.

        •   Focus on developing a customer base by servicing them through the product. Focus
            on solving their problems with the product. Even if you have to spend a lot of time to
            build rapport with the customer, remember that when the customer sees fantastic
            results from your product, they will sell for you willingly. A satisfied customer’s
            testimonial is very powerful. Repeat sales from the satisfied customer (and the
            people around them) will ensure a consistent cash flow.

        •   BARTER TRADE your company’s product with networkers from OTHER companies!
            If I have loads of stock from my company (either through purchasing in bulk or from
            my auto-ship), chances are, there are networkers in other companies are more than
            willing to trade with you since they have loads of stock also. With new types of stock
            in your hand, you are able to tap into other markets and build rapport with them so
            you can introduce them to your main opportunity. (If my company only sells
            cosmetics and no supplements, I can find a networker in the supplement line and
            exchange products to tap the supplement market.)

        •   Join RELEVANT affiliate programs online that generate cash flow if you are Internet
            savvy. Find affiliate programs that let you participate for a very low cost or free.
            Remember the principle that you want to generate cash flow and help other people
            solve their problems. This puts you in a position to once again, build rapport with
            your potential prospects and generates you leads. For example (using cosmetics

            again) you could find that there is an excellent book, “Look Like a Supermodel with
            Just 3 Brushstrokes”, for example, that you can promote as an affiliate and maybe
            pick up $20 for every one of them you sell. You can write a review of it on your blog
            and then give your affiliate link to send your readers (your customer data base) to
            buy it. If you search your area of interest on ClickBank you’ll find lots of products
            like this that you can also sell to your data base of clients and potential clients.

            But keep it RELEVANT and recommend only items of the highest quality, or you’ll
            end up looking like a circus, and losing credibility with the very people whose trust
            you’re working to earn.

            For instance the big bonus that I give away at the end of this book is the best free
            advertising encyclopedia I’ve seen, yet in my opinion it does have a serious flaw. So
            I still recommend you grab it, but at the same time, as you’ll see, I do my best to
            warn you about the part that I think isn’t in your best interests.

        •   Give away free information on network marketing (there are lots of free or low cost
            e-books or viral marketing tools around the net) or write free articles on your
            products and post them to your friends, associates or a subset of your customer list.
            For example: If you are in the health industry, write (or interview an expert) an article
            about general health issues or health supplements that will give your potential
            prospects awareness on their health and when they are curious they will ask you for
            more information. You can share your product with them afterwards.

        •   Create videos showing your product in use and upload them to YouTube, with a link
            back to your site.

        •   Become known as an expert in solving the problem that your product is designed to
            solve, and then offer yourself as a speaker to groups. There are many groups that
            meet for breakfasts, for example, that are always in desperate search for new
            speakers and if your “gig” is interesting or entertaining, you’ll quickly become hot
            property!

        •   Hold “events” yourself that are essentially demonstrations or presentations, but be
            careful with these because they’ll fade out fast if they don’t EXACTLY meet people’s

            needs. You need to have a theme which people care deeply about, and it has to be

     Developing Your Own Turn-Key System
     Network Marketing is a business for yourself but not by yourself.

     Although there is no hard and fast rule or any magic formula that I can suggest, because
     any system you decide to create will differ from company to company, you can develop your
     own turn-key system within your organization.

     What I mean by this is that the system is designed with the team in mind where you and all
     your downline all FOLLOW THE SAME SYSTEM as a general outline. Everybody needs to
     head in the same direction as a team and a single-minded focus on achieving the team
     objective is crucial.

     Here are some guidelines I can suggest to you:

        •   Hold local training sessions in addition to the company’s training sessions online or
            offline with all your team members.
        •   Educate all the team members about proper cash flow guidelines when building the
            business. Give everyone free material to review.
        •   Everyone decide how much effort must be put in, for example, a weekly or monthly
            target volume to achieve.
        •   Training sessions on how to use online systems that generate leads or using affiliate
            websites (if your company sponsors one). You may even work together to create
            your own team website.
        •   Buddy system to minimize prospecting costs (like driving to the meetings together or
            prospecting together).
        •   Brainstorming ideas on other ways to save costs (for example: joining a phone plan
            together as mentioned above).
