Title:
The development of enzyme conjugated MIP hydrogels for proteomic studies.
Programme:
Technological Sector Research: Strand I Post-Graduate R&D Skills Programme 2007

Project Description
Proteomics is the study of the composition, structure, function, and interaction of the proteins
directing the activities of each living cell. It is instrumental in the discovery of markers that
indicate a particular disease i.e. biomarkers. The separation and identification of proteins is a
crucial branch of proteomics.

This project will investigate the development and application of Molecularly Imprinted polymers
for the identification and separation of proteins. Molecularly Imprinted Polymers are synthetic
polymers with selectivity towards an imprint or template molecule. The template molecule binds
selectivity to a monomer and in the presence of a crosslinker it becomes imprinted in a polymer.
The template is then extracted leaving pockets into which the analyte can fit.
This work will involve synthesising Molecularly imprinted polymers using proteins as templates
and determining their selectivity. The project will encompass three areas: Protein Chemistry
(analysis and detection of proteins); Enzymology & Polymer Chemistry (MIPs technology).

Minimum Entry Requirements:
The applicant should hold an honours degree (2.2) in Bioanalysis, Biotechnology, Biochemistry,
Biological Sciences or Chemical/Analytical Science. An interest in Protein chemistry and
Enzymology is also desirable.

Funding:

Funding for this position is a tax free stipend of 12,500 Euros per annum. Fees are fully paid.
Funding is also available for consumables and travel to national and international conferences.
The contract duration is 24 months.
