BSBA Résumé Guidelines and Samples

GENERAL FORMAT

 Length: One page

 Margins: Left: 0.5” to 0.75"

Right: 0.5"

Indent: 1 tab or 1/4”

Top (range): 0.5" to 1.0"

Bottom (range): 0.5" to 1.0"

 Font: Times New Roman

 Font Size: 10 pt.

 Name/Address: Name centered, 10 pt. font, all CAPITAL LETTERS, bold. Centered under your name, put email

address in lowercase letters with no underline. If you are not using your school address account, make

sure your e-mail address is professional. For example, johnsmith@yahoo.net. Do not use an email

address that is questionable or vague, such as myresume@yahoo.net or kittycat@yahoo.net.

Use both permanent and school addresses when applicable. School address and phone number at left

margin; permanent address and phone number justified at right margin. List a phone number that is

reliable and has a professional outgoing message.

 Format: List education and business experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first).

 Subject Headings: CAPITALIZE, bold, underline and place along left margin. Use only the following headings, in this

order: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, ACTIVITIES and OTHER DATA.

 Bullets: Indented ¼” from the left margin; 10 pt. font.

 School/Company

Names: CAPITALIZE and bold school names and company names. Under the company name, you have the

option to list a brief description of the employer’s type of business. This is particularly helpful if the

name of the company is not widely recognized or further clarification is needed (e.g. company name

has changed due to a recent merger or acquisition).

 Position Titles: Place directly under company name or company descriptor. Use italics in upper and lower case.

 Locations: Place locations of universities and companies at the right margin (justified). Bold in upper and lower

case. Example: Minneapolis, MN

 Dates: Dates should be shown as months and full years. For example, 5/2006-8/2006. Place dates along the

right margin directly under the locations affiliated with school/company names. The dates must be

listed in reverse chronological order.

 Restrictions: -Do not include OBJECTIVE or REFERENCES sections.

-Do not underline anything other than the subject headings.

-Do not include personal information (e.g., age, height, weight, marital status).

CONTENT

EDUCATION Begin with WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY followed by OLIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS on the line below.

For each school include degree, majors/concentrations, and expected graduation date. Include other information such as GPA

(3.X/4.0), honors, and awards. Your phrases should be in bulleted format. However, you may use paragraph format if additional

space is needed on the resume.

Study Abroad - If you have participated in a study abroad program, include this information. A general description of the

program and any specific focus of study should be included.

EXPERIENCE Full-time and part-time work experience is applicable. Unpaid volunteer positions can also be listed in this

section if they are unrelated to on-campus activities. Begin with company name and job title, followed by your accomplishments

and results. Use bulleted-phrase format and begin phrases with action verbs (see included list).

2

Include as much work experience as possible, even if it doesn’t relate to the job you are seeking. For example, students are

sometimes negative about their fast-food or retail experience. Customer service experience obtained from working at a fast-food

restaurant is valuable training for the business world. Identify how the skills you perfected during summer work at McDonald’s

(customer service, peer training, time management) can be transferred to the corporate world.

ACTIVITIES Include involvement/memberships in athletics, professional societies, fraternities/sororities, and student

organizations and highlight all leadership positions.

OTHER DATA Include computer skills, foreign languages, and interests not related to the EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, or

ACTIVITIES sections.

TIPS FOR AN EFFECTIVE RESUME

 Write out abbreviations and acronyms

 Abbreviate states (MO, not Missouri) except in the bullet points (e.g., "Sales responsibility for Illinois" (not IL)

 Write out names of countries (Paris, France)

 Capitalize languages: Spanish, not spanish; French, not french

 Write all years fully: 5/2006-8/2006, not 5/2006-07

 Keep it simple, concise and visually appealing. Avoid overcrowding.

 Pay attention to spelling, punctuation, and grammar

 Use quality white or off-white paper for hard copy resumes

 Communicate the transferability of your experiences and the value-added benefits you offer an employer. Use phrases

that demonstrate instances where you have made a difference or influenced the outcome in a job, leadership role,

volunteer position, team project, etc.

 Focus on facts and figures. Use short phrases rather than long sentences

 Make your resume action-oriented. Use words that convey results (e.g., reduced, gained, brought, advanced, expanded,

saved, improved, increased, etc.

 Use key phrases and buzz words pertaining to the industry and position you are seeking only if someone reading your

resume would understand them. If in doubt, explain the word or phrase. They will catch the eye of a recruiter and will

improve the “scanability” of your resume.

 Do not abbreviate degrees (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, not BSBA).

 Do not use “Wash U” as an abbreviation

 Insert a spacing row between each entry

 Do not use a line to separate heading from body of résumé or between résumé sections

 Do not lie, exaggerate or use humor

What if the resume won't fit on one page?

 Minimize top and bottom margins to 0.5". Continue to use a single blank line between sections

 Use a paragraph format rather than a bullet format in EDUCATION and OTHER DATA sections

 Remove phrases listed under your experiences that do not relate to the types of jobs you will be seeking

 Remove activities or honors that are older or do not represent applicable skills or interests

What if I don't have enough information to fill one page?

 Maximize top and bottom margins to 1.0" and use up to 3 blank lines between sections

 Use a bullet format rather than paragraph format in EDUCATION, ACTIVITIES, and OTHER DATA sections

 Include any positions or experiences that demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and other skills that will be useful in future

positions

 Include activities and honors in EDUCATION section

 If necessary and appropriate, include high school information. If included, use only the basic and most relevant data; high

school information should not overpower most recent college data.
