Suggestions for Writing a Reference Letter for an Awards Nomination
The following hints are intended to help the writer submit a letter of recommendation that will enhance the nomination of the individual. For those with grant writing experience, this will be familiar. 1. Read the name of the award and the selection criteria. 2. Re-read the name of the award and the selection criteria. Be sure your candidate fits this criteria. Write your letter with these award criteria in mind. 3. Discuss the nomination with the State Council to ensure there is not a conflict, e.g., that two individuals in the same state are nominated for the same award. This is acceptable at the national level but may not be the direction the State Council would choose to go. 4. Check with the National ENA Office to see who has won this award in the past few years. This may give you an idea of the characteristics of former winners and will also tell you if your nominee has previously been honored with the award. 5. Interview the nominee to understand their strengths, experience, and relevant supportive data. 6. To strengthen your case, address every criterion listed. In the body of the letter, organize your information logically. Have others read your letter for clarity and relevancy. 7. Give specific examples and try to paint a picture of the nominee. You are describing an individual who may not be known to the judges. 8. Submit your letter prior to the deadline.
