									            EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN-PARAMEDIC PROGRAM

Thank you for your interest in the EMT-Paramedic Program.

Since the 1950's, the need for quality pre-hospital care of the critically ill and injured has been recognized
and a standardized level of care has been developed through the Department of Transportation. At the
basic level, the Emergency Medical Technician provides stabilization, life support and safe transportation
of the trauma victim and the medically ill patient to a medical facility. At the more advanced level and in
addition to those functions, the EMT-Paramedic provides advanced cardiac and trauma life support.

In order to attain these levels of training, the Metropolitan Community College has developed the EMT-
Paramedic Training Program at the Pioneer and Blue River campuses. The program is quite flexible in
that there are several options available, depending on the degree of certification the student wishes to
achieve.

                                       Prerequisites for Admission

Prerequisites for admission to the program include a high school diploma or equivalent and the student
must be 18 years of age by completion of the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic course. New
students will need to complete an application for admission to the Metropolitan Community College and
have all high school, GED and college records forwarded to the Records Office. Transfer students
registering for courses having prerequisites are urged to bring documentation of previous college work.

                              Emergency Medical Technician (EMTP 150)

The basic EMT class is one semester in length. Upon successful completion of the course, the student
may then take the National Registry Practical and Written examinations. Once these examinations are
passed, the student may then apply for licensure to the State of Missouri Unit of Emergency Medical
Services as an Emergency Medical technician.

Courses are offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Daytime and evening sections are
available at the Pioneer and Blue River campuses.

Enrollment in the EMT-Basic course is accomplished by contacting the Counseling Office at
Metropolitan. Call (816) 759-4079 for an appointment. Note: the enclosed application is NOT required
for entry into the EMT-Basic Course.
                   Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Certificate Program

Entry into the EMT-Paramedic Certificate Program is by admission. To be considered for acceptance in
the program, prospective students must complete the enclosed application form and forward it along with
the required materials listed on the form to the Program Office (see submission instructions on application
form) no later than November 1st (to begin the program in January) and June 1st (to begin the program
in August).

When the application packet has been received and determined to be complete, the applicant will be
notified and an interview scheduled. Interviews will be held late in November and late in June. Those
accepted will be enrolled early in December and early in July, respectively.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION INCLUDE:

1. College placement testing requirement may be completed in ONE of the following way:

        a. College placement testing (ASSET) scores - English - 39 and above; Reading - 43 and above;
Math - 37 and above. Deficiencies in these scores must be made up by satisfactory completion
of recommended developmental courses prior to being admitted to the EMT-P Program.
        b. ACT scores from the last three years may be used instead of placement test scores - English -
18 and above; Reading - ACT Composite 20 and above; Math - 15 and above.
        c. Students having 15 hours of previous college credit that include "C" grades or better in English
and Math may be exempted from the Placement Test.

2. Missouri EMT Certification: Successful completion of the Missouri EMT practical and written
examinations is required for acceptance to the program. Candidates for reciprocity and others with
   pending certification will be considered.

3. Field experience: at least one year preferred.

4. Completion of BIOL 108: Introductory to Anatomy & Physiology may be taken prior to admission or
during the first semester of the program. Applicants meeting this requirement will be given preference
   in the selection process.

5. Candidate interview.

                                  Associate of Applied Science Degree

The third option available is the two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree which is not mandatory,
but is highly recommended to provide greater career mobility. It includes all of the courses mentioned
previously as well as a general studies curriculum. The degree program is outlined later in this
information packet.

                                              Financial Aid

Included in this packet is an outline of the approximate costs of the EMT and EMT-Paramedic Programs.
For information about grants, loans, scholarships or work-study opportunities, contact the Metropolitan
Community College Financial Aid Office at (816) 759-4067.
                                 Criminal Background Checks (CBC)

Clinical sites require that only students with an acceptable consumer report, as it relates to criminal
background, be allowed to participate in clinical rotations. Therefore, prior to commencing the clinical
portion of your program, the Metropolitan Community College will have a credit reporting agency
conduct a background check. You are responsible for completing the required application information
with the credit reporting agency and paying the cost. Criminal background checks will be conducted
upon acceptance to the program and annually thereafter.

The Metropolitan Community College shall not use the results of a background check as criteria for
admission to any program or course. However, you should know that you will not be able to obtain a
license to practice or be allowed to participate in clinicals should you have an unacceptable background as
defined by state law regarding health care providers. An unacceptable background includes a felony
and/or a class “A” misdemeanor conviction.
