Sustainable Design Online
Letter from Sustainable Design Faculty: Someone once said that if we do not change the direction we are going, we are likely to end up precisely where we are headed. This simple phrase helps guide my approach to sustainability. The issues surrounding the topic of sustainability are complex and can seem overwhelming, and yet all that is required are some simple, if fundamental, course corrections to avoid certain disaster. Not really so difficult once you start. MCAD is instituting the Sustainable Design Online certificate program at a time when business is starting to incorporate sustainable and triple bottom line accounting principles into its modes of operation. Companies are being asked by shareholders and stakeholders to produce corporate responsibility and sustainability reports with substance. Sustainability is a word at least recognized, if not fully understood, in boardrooms around the world. It is becoming accepted that long-term economic viability involves “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [1987 report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future]. Few designers, producers or purchasers of design today are equipped with the information or skills they need to meet the challenge of sustainability, yet design is a powerful tool that will help shape our future. In the creative industries, the choices we make and practices we engage in have a significant impact on the rest of the society and the planet. It is important that we demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, both to serve our clients and our companies effectively and to continue to improve our craft. The challenge—and the promise—of sustainable design is not necessarily to made do with less but to design better. Sustainable design is a more evolved approach in which the entire life cycle of an object or a process is considered from cradle-tocradle, where everything is part of a larger, interconnect system, where we learn from the creativity of nature itself. In the new sustainable economy, designers will be engaged to reconceive, redesign and innovate nearly every element of everyday life. It really is an exciting time to be a part of design. The Sustainable Design Online program is designed to help create the next generation of business and design leaders, while advancing design’s best business practices. The courses strike a balance between the theories of sustainability and practical application with a focus on design that only a school of MCAD’s caliber can offer. Though sustainability as a practice will continue to evolve, this design program establishes sound fundamentals that endow students with the skills they will need to navigate this changing landscape while preparing them to implement what they have learned immediately. Sustainability can be learned and it can be practiced. All it takes is a step in the right direction.
